It's much better than NTAE.

It will be interesting to get the 3rd EP and work out a track order for everything. Neither Add Violence or NTAE seem to have a very cohesive tracklisting.

Also, I believe The Background World has taken the title as longest NIN song that is not a remix. It's a fucking amazing song too.

As for this EP right now, It's quite surprising to see him going to a more harsher direction compared to Hesitation Marks, but I guess it kinda works it.

The last 3 songs (This isn't the place, Not Anymore and The Background World) are pretty solid. Coupled with a couple songs from the last EP and you have pretty amazing rebirth of NIN !

Trent is just a really genuine dude. hes the goth kid success story, grew up depressed and with some shit on his plate, overcame it through art band personal growth. Probably why some times his lyrics are a little edgy and cheese, it's from his genuine heart almost like a diary. Also it's industrial inspired music so a little edginess and cheese is needed. Honestly just start with pretty hate machine for more raw synthpop, then TDS if you want more of an industrial sound. The fragile for more of a mix of both and great composition.

Eh, I think The Fragile would've suffered if he released it as two LP's. The first half is a lot stronger than the second but as a whole it's more than the sum of its parts. Plus Kid A and Amnesiac don't really work as a comparison because those two records are super different sonically. I've listened to a bunch of different track sequences people have made for a Kid Amnesiac double album and none of them work as well as listening to both albums individually.

You’d play a piano motif that’s maybe eight bars long and just let it go, and it starts to feel like a Xerox copy, a little bit. If you left it all night and came back the next day, it sounds strangely familiar and warm, in a way that a computer couldn’t have done, or a plug in couldn’t have done. It started to invoke the sense of memory or place. It had a real kind of homey, organic human sound. We created probably 30 of those things and would let them go for various amount of time, depending on how well they deteriorated. That provided the foundation for all of the heartfelt motifs in the picture.

Trent changed the end lyrics of Burning Bright from "I can't tell if I am breathing anymore" to "I don't know if I am dreaming any more" for the live version, feels pretty deliberate. Lots of references to sleep and dreaming going on lately.

We have no idea, but I got some speculations.
NTAE seems to be about a guy who starts realizing he is locked up in a machine, the title of the EP now makes sense, Not The Actual Events, since they really are not.
The EPs so far referenced almost entirety of NIN's and even Trent's discography in various of ways, artwork, lyrics, you name it.
This could all point to this protagonist being stuck in a simulation of TDS/TF, it could mean that the events of The Downward Spiral/The Fragile were stimulated and he starts now just realizing.
The idea of something not being real has been rampant throughout NIN discography. But this time it seems to be the focus
