Because the vast majority of power metal sucks. USPM has nice riffs, but it structurally usually doesn't have the diversity in content of neither its cousins NWOBHM nor prog metal like Crimson Glory. The other stuff is some of the worst in metal as it has some of the weakest riffs with just cutesy melodies and other gimmicks like synth lines, being just as much an epitome of gimmick garbage in metal as something like glam or Liturgy.

Nah, Murmuure has a better sense for progression with riffs than say...Burzum or Ulver. It helps that the track lengths are far shorter than typical atmoshit so the listener's time isn't being wasted on a lot of boring repetition that makes atmoshit so boring. Not to mention some of the particular sounds are unique not just for the genre, but even the ambient its inspired from.

I don't know where you're from but the "Why can't european people be proud of their heritage" discussion is age old in most western communities. The problem isn't with pride, the problem is with underlying opinions. I think ironically the solution to the problem will be the immigrants themselves, who coming from flag-waving communities and will often start to fly the flags of their adopted home countries within a few years because that's the way they show pride back home. When white people realise that people outside of europe fly their flags all the time, they will realise that there's no problem with white people doing that, as long as they don't belong to an openly fascist connection.

Is there any Appalachian folk metal? I love old-time, hymnals, and appreciate bluegrass, but I can't particularly think of a way to combine it with metal without sounding forced.

Well the americas has (sometimes unfairly) gotten shunned byt parts of the extreme metal community because of capitalism and also in some cases because of anti-semetic influence. I could see it, but it has to start from the right way. It most likely would be forced if you started with appalachian folk metal right away (unless you really know the sound), rather I think america needs to build an extreme metal scene of their own and expand from that before they can reach the diverse sound of europena/scandinavian extreme metal. Another problem is that a lot of US traditional music is deeply rooted in christianity.

This is stretching it, but one could possibly argue that combining jazz with metal is a form of American folk metal. But that argument falls apart when most of the jazz in metal is sourced from jazz fusion or avant-garde jazz (despite free and avant-garde jazz trying to bring back the group improvisation that typified Dixieland jazz).

I don't even know what jazz metal is, if you have some exemple that isn't awful feel free to post it. I could definitely see an argument for jazz metal being accepted since the sources for some jazz songs are at least as old as the sources for some folk metal, although the practitioners would probably like to pretend that their sources are more ancient than they actually are.

Diablo Swing Orchestra combines swing jazz with metal, but I do not enjoy it at all. Shining (the Norwegian one, not the Swedish one) combines free jazz and the like with black metal, but I don't particularly enjoy them much, either.

Appalachian Winter is equally non-metal as it is metal. Sorta like your typical atmofolk band that'll have like a 12 minute long track but with a five minute clean guitar intro.

And yeah a lot of the Indian groups/those around them surprisingly play a lot less melodic stuff than expected.

I don't know really, I guess there's some sort of distinction although it's unclear. Most serious black metal musicians I've known have enjoyed classical music in some form although it's a genre deeply bound in christianity. When I talk about chants I'm mostly talking about chants that weren't written by any famous man, but rather just known by the church community. I don't know how, but something about it deeply resounds with my interest for extreme metal. This a chechen war dacne, a muslim chant politically removed from any sort of BM but it's fucking brutal in it's own right.

Black Metal borrows allot from medieval Catholic aesthetic. Traditional Catholicism is the religion were people go on pilgrimages to go check out the mummified body parts of saints, and is practically paganism. Latin masses filled with candles and icons is really sublime, and Jesus is the victim of a brutal Crucifixion while also being God. Catholicism and Orthodoxy, when taken at their core, are extremely dark religions that are just as opposed to contemporary society as any black metal band would be.
