What's /mu/'s thoughts on this album and trip hop in general?
>>74021988
it is an ok album with a couple of memorable hits
it's not good party music, the album or the genre
it's music for depressed people with an opioid addiction
i will keep shilling Moth Equals

portishead be all end all
too bad the genre didn't age well
Genre that gets unnecessarily shit on around here see >>>74022047.
Sneaker Pimps - Becoming X
>>74021988
love it. tricky is an all time favourite artist of mine, way ahead of his time
that said, I don't view it as a true genre, more of a regional scene and time period. the sonic approach has just been absorbed into music in general instead of continuing as a genre unto itself. like shoegaze, any modern attempt at the genre comes off as a pastiche, but using elements of it elsewhere or blending with another genre opens up a world of possibilities. it's especially true of trip hop which itself was kinda defined by its eclecticism
as for massive attack, maxinquaye is a great album and I love group four especially. it's a shame liz fraser disappeared of the face of the earth, but it's fitting she was on that album because early cocteau twins was proto-trip hop. I think early massive attack is kinda overrated. very dry, not as atmospheric and too much like traditional hip hop. portishead are hard to dislike, but I prefer third to their original albums

sneaker pimps were nice too, another band that went all over the place musically
Really good background music. I love the genre but I get the beef with it. Glad it happened.

??? i think it's a genre that has aged better than most.
disclaimer: i wasnt grown up in the 90s enjoying the music on drugs

>early cocteau twins was proto-trip hop
now there's an interesting take. what's a specific track that illustrates this?
>>74021988
I like Portishead and some Massive Attack songs.
Melody A.M. is my favorite Trip Hop album, though it hardly sounds the same as most in the genre

most of garlands, but especially shallow then halo comes to mind. siouxsie was a clear influence on trip hop too

Anyone here familiar with Everything But The Girl? They're not solely a trip hop act, but their last two albums have some good tracks in the genre. Their vocalist is actually the one who sang on Protection by Massive Attack.
