Rock as a culture has been in the gutter since the 2000's, there's nothing exciting or thought provocking for young people anymore. Just an endless deference towards past sounds and attitudes. Simply put rock lost its balls.

i don't listen to commercial rap stations, but i do occasionally check in on my local top 40 station and my local rock station. the top 40 station is about what you'd expect. the rock station is basically """"classic rock"""" 80% of the time, with the remaining 20% being a revolving door of various "new music" that they've decided needs to be played and impact the billboard rock charts.

here's a short list of bands and artists that mainstream rock radio has are "2010s relevant" and decided to hype:

>The Struts
>The Pretty Reckless
>Kaleo
>The Revivalists
>Rival Sons
as well as established acts that have been around for a while and still put out new stuff like RHCP and Kings of Leon.

What DAMN has done to the charts, all, sales, streaming and airplay is really something that nobody really saw coming. DAMN doing what it has done this year is an outlier. By all accounts, that album should not really be the juggernaut that it is. It has not left the top 5 since release.

Rock has shifted too but it still won't let a black artist come out and call themselves a rocker and expect to be accepted by the rock fans, who are aging now anyway. And to me it looks like a lot of these kids who used to pick up guitars download Ableton instead.
