Get in here boys.

>What is noiserock?
An umbrella term for a section of post-hardcore music defined by having certain abrasive unmusical qualities; like squealing saxophones, odd time signatures, dissonance, or just lots of noisey feedback / effects.

>Where do I start?
Big Black - Atomizer
No Trend - Too Many Humans
The Jesus Lizard - Down

These exemplify the three main sounds found in noiserock.

>Now what?
Stick around.
>>
Starting topic: What's the best contemporary noise-rock act around?

Hands down the White Suns, they are untouchable in terms of conisitency and complexity. Saw them live in LA, and they blew my FUCKING mind
>>
Where do I find people to make my noisy krauty tribal post-punk band?
>>
Blue Daisies - Wilt is still better than 90% of noise rock amd is the intercession between The Birthday Party and Cop Shoot Cop

>>

You can try this band, Swivel Stick. They were a punk band band from Florida that also had a flair for the experimental. Think of them sorta like the Husker Du of the 90s. They only released one album, but had a second album in the works. The music was generally depressive stuff. Shame that second album never came out, it was looking to be pretty rad.

Album they released:

i'm sorry if that came out as pretentious, that was not the intent, i just don't like post-hardcore

but anyway it's the usual stuff everybody here likes too, swans, sonic youth, dna, mars, ramleh (the rockier side of them), skullflower, boris, a place to bury strangers, big black (yeah i know, but never felt them to be 'post-hardcore', the drums remind me of industrial rock), fushitsusha, distorted pony, brainbombs

>post-hardcore
i tried listening to the jesus lizard thinking it would be the harshest shit but it came down to sounding like heavy rock music with slightly weird vocals, emphasis on riffs instead of white noise and distortion, same thing goes for shellac, too technical (no wonder people classify it as math rock too)

also it might have something to the fact that i dislike hardcore punk as well

>>
>>74016625
Well you're just picking out a moment. Overall this record is brutal prog. But The Flying Luttenbachers have changed around a lot, some of their records are definitely closer to noise rock (like The Void), but they're part of a more brutal prog aesthetic, like Yowie, Ruins, etc..
>>
>>74016651
I thought Ruins was zeuhl? Do you know of any noise-zeuhl?
>>
>>74016651
>Well you're just picking out a moment
Yes, and Mosaic is filled with tons of moments of noise rock. The ending of Suite Circle, the climax of Martzmer, the intro of Suite Circle, Emer's beginning and ending, it goes on. I will concede and say it's not ENTIRELY noise rock, but it most DEFINITELY has noise rock in it as a prime element, along with free-jazz, and this brutal prog.

This is what all noise rock bands should aim for, unapologetic and cathartic music with over-the-top lyrics, poorly recorded. Not that Albini trash.
>>
>>74016693
The vocals aren't nearly as visceral as something from Boredoms. I'd love it if more bands aped these kinds of sounds: >>74013574
>>
>>74016689
Yes it has elements of various things, but really, genre is obsolete. The Luttenbachers are definitely brutal prog, Weasel even coined the term. So you know, if labels make you feel safe and comfortable, by all means lump things in little boxes for your mental health. It's all just music to me, no need to confine and limit things, that just leads to reducing creative possibilities, which is never good.

>>74016676
Ruins are zeuhl but started out noisier. Lightning Bolt are another bass and drums duo that remind me of them but are definitely more noise rock. If you care.
>>
>>74016759
Lol get off my dick ya jerk. You're the one who started this conversation by interjecting Mosaic is more like prog. Then when I point out the moments in the album that are indicative of noise you double back and go "genre is obsolete" while coming at me with this bullshit:
>So you know, if labels make you feel safe and comfortable, by all means lump things in little boxes for your mental health
Fuck off you jerk. Can't even stick to your guns or have a normal conversation. Funny thing is I agree with you about genre labeling. I posted Mosaic because it's relevant to the topic of the thread, or didn't you notice?

i love harry pussy. never heard of the dead c, ill check them out
>>
>>74026907
they're not noise rock because they're cheap late 80s/90s bandwagon hopping alt rockers
>>
>>74026968
Do you just ignore their first few records entirely?
The use of dissonance and nontraditional harmony certainly makes them noise rock for good portion of their discography.
>>
>>74026928
They're pretty similar to Harry Pussy in that they're more just "noise music with drums" than straightforward noise rock

are you retarded? yeah their stuff past daydream nation is laughable but they've been around since 1981 and the noise rock they were making was nowhere near where punk was taking alternative rock

>>
>>74027065
Sonic Youth are pretty vanilla as far as noise rock goes, but their first few albums are noisy as hell and even late-career stuff like "The Diamond Sea" gets pretty noisy. So I'd still call them noise rock up to a certain point.

But I see where you're coming from
>>
>>74027071
cool thanks. i'm tired of music that's obsessed with technical ability
>>
>>74027086
APTBS is on the more shoegazy side of the spectrum, but I'd still classify noisy shoegaze as noise rock to some degree
>>
>>74027075
>>74027089
you know, i think its real cute when you try to argue against what is undeniably true.

Noisy shoegaze with folk influences is best shoegaze.

>>
>>74027192
im not going to waste my words on a poser??
>>
>>74027166
i would actually like to know how you're defining noise rock because i'm fine with being wrong but gaining some knowledge on something i like, but it sounds like you're just shitting on sy for selling out after their best albums were made. i don't see you throwing a fit about big black. atomizer is not noise rock and yet it's at the top of the chart
>>
>>74027197
Any other recs in this same vein?
>>
>>74027210
So you're just an asshole then, thanks for clarifying
>>
>>74027166
Reading this again, you might actually just be a troll.

gg
>>
>>74027219
also, as much as i love guitar wolf, they're not noise rock either even if jet generation was the loudest album ever recorded, they still have no uses of dissonance other than feedback which is easily distinguishable from their basic rock sound
>>
>>74027219
to be honest, big black isn't really what i would call true noise rock
as for what i define noise rock as, take a look at what japanese musicians were putting out in the mid to late 70s. this psychedelic influenced noise rock is what really laid the foundation for all true noise rock. after punk and the hardcore scene, noise rock transitioned into a gigantic joke.
>>
>>74027225
That's what I'd been trying to find this couple of days. APTBS gives me a similar feeling, and I think noisy shoegaze is the subgenre it'd fall into. So far, I haven't been able to find bands that incorporate folk elements though.
>>
>>74027317
i agree completely but those japs owe a lot of it to white light white heat
>>
>>74027219
The reason noise rock is good, is because it's hard to define.
Ignore him.
>>
>>74027355
To be fair, all decent noise rock owes a lot to that album
>>
>>74027344
Not to turn this into a shoegaze discussion, but IMO most decent shoegaze could also be classified as noise rock, and the exploring the noisier side of the genre is one of the only ways it could progress at this point. I guess that could be said of either noise rock or shoegaze

Forgive me if this is off topic, I kind of just started typing my thoughts because I'm a bit drunk

yeah, the velvets are definitely very important but it wouldn't have become what it did if not for the exchange of ideas, what the japanese artists brought back from the ny art scene
>>74027370
this doesn't even make sense, noise rock is pretty easy to define. we're not talking about some catch-all like "experimental"
>>
>>74027670
I think thread proves it's hard to define.

I dont understand them as noise rock, they seem like pure math to me though I have heard them be called hybrid math and noise rock.
>>
>>74045857
they just seem so far disconnected from all other math rock bands. most math rock is twinkly and melodic and pretty. hella is dirty, focused and energetic at levels I've never seen a mathrock band be.
if this doesn't sound closer to noise rock than math I must be deaf

>>74047349
>they just seem so far disconnected from all other math rock bands. most math rock is twinkly and melodic and pretty
thats a deviation of math rock which has taken over somewhat, similar to how postrock became crescendocore with the second wave - not to dis stuff like toe but I see the *core* of math rock to be the energetic, fast, angular stuff.
