Honestly piano lessons. I took 7 years of lessons. That's where I learned to read and write sheet music, as well as basic music theory and composition. I also took a year and a half of jazz piano, which really introduced me to harmony and how essential chords are for popular music. I learned rhythm, reading and writing it, as well as internalizing time from being on my high school drumline. I didn't have a good understanding of rhythm before hand, and I can honestly I learned more about music and musicianship than i ever did from piano lessons.

Anyway I think the biggest part of theory is understanding the relationships between notes and key signatures. From that you can form the basis of your improvisation and counterpoint.

I hoped this helped anon. I personally don't think music theory and the ability to read and write score are required to be a great composer. Personally I never ever consider it while i write, but theory is very helpful when listening to the music of others.
