When he was fairly young, he ran his own studio (Studio Z), however, an undercover cop from the area commissioned him to make a fake porno tape (which zappa did with one of his girlfriends or something) and when he handed it in, they arrested him for producing obscene content (this was in the early 60s i think) and seized his studios and material. He never got all of it back and it left a big impression I guess.
