wow santana looks like shit these days

Is esoteric riffing in the style of DsO, Portal, Pyrhhon, etc. the only way to innovate now in metal outside the usual non-genre related gimmick innovations like Liturgy? Why not more use of electronics? With the right use of electronic effects (the more dark/industrial type instead of cheese synths), we can have more visceral and meaty riffs than ever before. Yet all we have is Godflesh's minimal drum machine with occasional effects, the IDM drums of Whourkr, and Satan knows how many bands with awful synth work.

their 2010 release was one of their best ever, but this feels like a combination of the worst of their 2002 and 2006 releases

the underlying concept is interesting, at least in theory, there are a few okay solos here and there, mostly in the beginning, the latin chanting intro in the opener is kind of cool, and so is the album cover for the standard edition (not pic related), but goddamnit, there is not one good song here, not even one decent chorus (holy grail's one is only okay in its last three lines). I honestly thought they could do no wrong

The drums are usually very repetitive and don't go much further outside of a few set beats.

I prefer the grooves on Sepultura's Roots to their earlier stuff except Morbid Vision/Bestial Devastation. Their earlier stuff has too much boring typical thrash chugging and a serious lack of creative riffing. I love the thick dark atmosphere on their first releases though which was unfortunately missing from the more conventional Schizophrenia, Beneath The Remains, and Arise.

What are some albums that showed so much promise, but one or two glaring flaws stopped it from being a bonafide classic?

For me it's Reek Of Putrefaction because the production doesn't help make the music sound more intense, just muffles it while the drums just can't keep up with the riffs.

This album is so fucking close to being one of my favorites of all time.
Unfortunately there's a number of small flaws throughout the album that prevent me from listing it among my top 10. Mostly related to the songwriting of some specific portion of some songs, and Adrian Frelich's vocal performance which is sadly subpar (even downright awful in Crying Woman).
I'm still very fond of it, but it's a shame that it noticeably could have been better.
