stupid question time, but is there a way to have a 16-step drum sequencer in Ableton?
>>
>>73970284
Don't even bother with it unless it's necessary and you already have an idea in your mind that you can tweak it to match. This applies to any kind of EQing anywhere; I used to aimlessly slap an EQ on practically anything just for the sake of it without having any concrete need or strategy for it and my tracks would always sound like shit at the end of the day.

The phrase "less is more" is something you should always keep in mind. Don't overdo it on the production minimalism, but also know when to stop adding/modifying things.

Break out the EQ when you're mixing and different sounds can't be clearly distinguished, or when one part always seems to be too loud or not loud enough no matter how low or high it is in the mix.

can someone recommend some videos or books on how to be financially okay in the music industry? mainly as a mix engineer but i understand that you pretty much have to be a jack of all trades for a long time as well.

how are people selling tracks/beats/songs nowadays? what are contract songs and exclusive rights songs?

whats the easiest way to build clientele?

Hey guys, just a quick survey:

I have (actually had) a band, somewhat crust/metallic hxc, and we're considering self-recording our EP as a farewell.
We don't really want the 'shitty punx' sound to it, but somethin like this kind of sound:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-stKJyl-IH8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeAvPgdPVc0

We're gonna use 5 mic recording for the drums and mic-to-amp recording for the guitars and bass. Pretty basic, I know, I guess we'll be recording with Pro-Tools.

Any set up or tips for recording/production?
I know this is a broad question but i just want to know if we're on the right track about this
>>

Yeah, that would solve the problem.

The thing is that I started using ableton last year and I made the songs at different moods and level of mastery over a long period of time.

So, for example, is using different kinds of reverb to be avoided?
How do you do to keep the tracks uniform? (it can't be good if one is quiet, the other super loud, etc.)
>>

This really good, especially if you've only been doing it for a month or so. The only thing I have to say is sometimes the little clicky cowbell isn't in tune with the rest of the song. I know, it's supposed to be off-key and discordant, but on some notes it's off key in a way that doesn't mesh with the rest of the song
other than that you really do have promise

>>73981224
I'd get a different clap sample, sounds a bit too generic. I would also add a little bit of texture or ambience to the song too. The bell's reverb does a good job but it needs something more.

I'm really having to split hairs here, you've got this down; especially for a newbie.
>>
how do I make those songs that are completely made out of samples of other songs? Mashups?
>>
>>73981327

This actually made me smile so fucking hard, thank you so much man that means alot. And yeah I also wasnt a fan of the clicking in the first song, but i needed another percussive layer and got a bit slack and It definitely shows.
And yeah man im looking at different sample packs for drums and stuff now, ive only really used one pack up until now.
>>
>>73976989
I can dig it. Vocals aren't too bad actually. I would say the main synth playing the chords is a little jarring and too up front. Maybe scoop out a little bit of the sibilant frequencies and put a little reverb on it so it's not quite as up front?

>>73977847
Comfy. Is that lead synth a softsynth?

So I'm going to be mixing for my old band's EP that's been in the works for years now pretty soon, and I'd appreciate some thoughts on this mix. Still awaiting vocals, and this mix is a few months old.

I'm assuming you mean stuff like Madeon's Pop Culture
I can't really give tips on HOW to sample, but when you're looking to do complextro:
>Listen to lots of music (duh)
>make note of songs with similar tempos, themes, melodies
>make notes of parts of these songs which are easily sampleable
>make sure to tempo match and tempo match REALLY well
>pitch shift the samples to the same key
>overlay them into some kind of new melody
>use your own drums and do your best to cancel out the original song's percussion
so on and so forth
it's not an easy genre to do, and that's coming from someone who does drum and bass

>>
my royalties started to come in today!
>>
>>73982332
Sadly, this. But don't get so down on yourself. Most people are boring pieces of shit with no hobbies or passions that contribute jack shit to the world. Even if your music has flaws, at least your making something instead of the people around you who don't do anything.

Also, normies don't hear the subtleties and minute details of music like we do. They are not analytic listeners like us. They are synthetic listeners; they listen to a song as one uniform piece. No non-producer or non-musician will notice if your track has too much compression, not enough reverb on the vocals, eq'ing mistakes, etc.

I can tell you from firsthand experience that normal people are more impressed with the fact that you make music to begin with. I've played live shows riddled with mistakes, and showed people songs with bad mixes, and no one noticed anything and I just received praise. Learn to take a fucking compliment. If someone praises you on your performance or a song, thank them. Don't say, "actually, there were a lot of mistakes in this, blah blah blah", because then that will tell the listener that their opinion was wrong and worth nothing, and that there are mistakes in your song that they weren't even aware of. This is a good way to alienate listeners, so just thank them for their compliments, and tell them you are glad they enjoyed the music.

If you are showing your music to a fellow musician/producer, then it would be more appropriate to ask for constructive criticism and for thoughts on the mix or whatever.

But trust me, normies aren't going to pick apart your music like we do. Your friends will just be impressed that you are making music at all. Don't let other people's opinions stop you from releasing music.

I have a studio set up in my spare room, the door is always open as I don't haven't fitted a door handle on the door yet, mixer, synths, guitar, pedals, samplers, studio monitors all in plain view. The first step is to find out what you want to get out of a modular system.
>>
>>73982953
True. I don't claim that your friends or normal people will be inherently interested in your music, but if you did show it to them or if they expressed interest in listening to it, I doubt they would ream you about the small mixing or arrangement errors or even notice.

>>73983189
>because the second I'm sure of something it's always proved wrong in the most spectacular way.
How so? I'm assuming that this means you post a clyp on /prod/ and then start to doubt yourself as soon as anyone on here criticizes your track? A lot of the criticism on /prod/ is not constructive and should be taken with a grain of salt. There can be useful advice given to you, but I think validation is overrated especially with something as subjective as music.

>then something or someone bigger and better comes along and puts me back in a place where only music in therapeutic. Like how can anyone ever be sure of anything?
I can definitely relate to music being an escape and salvation from the pressures of life. It's also very easy to be extremely self-critical and think everything you make is trash and that you're not improving as a musician/producer. I've been stuck in that rut for years now, but I realize that mindset is responsible for my writer's block.

You have to accept your fallibility and have a degree of self-acceptance if you want to improve as an artist, no matter what medium you work in. It's good to always look for something to improve upon in your work, but ultimately I think perfectionism is a bad thing because it stifles productivity and can quickly kill your confidence. Realize that nothing you make will ever be perfect, and that making mistakes is part of the learning experience. Personally, I would prioritize quantity over quality at the beginning to get used to finishing songs and establishing a productive workflow. Obviously don't just release garbage, but don't fret over perfecting every song. 10 average produced songs > 1 perfectly produced song.

This. Also relates to other parts of my life, but it's not really /prod/ related. Shit just feels like the bizarro version of Can't Tell Me Nothing by Kanye. I'm too easily swayed to doubt myself and my beliefs, which leads to self deprecation, which leads to lack of motivation.

Actually patching things together via visual programming makes a lot of sense for signal processing. If you did it by text (which is admittedly superior for general purpose programming) you'd inevitably have to draw diagrams anyway (like people did with MUSIC-N or CSound). Patch cords make perfect sense for modular synthesizers, audio routing, etc.

Guitar is too thin sounding. I would boost the low-mids of the guitar, as well as a De-esser to keep those string squeaks under control. The vocals are too muddy to really even understand what your'e saying. Boost the high end in the vocals (around 2.1k for more clarity, for example). Everything is dry, you should add some more reverb to help create more of a space for all the elements to exist in.

Cheers, ill give that a crack

You can also change the way you recorded the guitar: For instance you might of had the mic pointing more at the neck of the guitar, where instead you should try moving down more towards where the body meets the neck. Try some different positions.

i really, REALLY like music.

i'm approaching year 5 in electronic music with three before that writing exclusively on guitar, and i'm JUST NOW getting to a point where i'd put some of my shit up next to "pro" songs and I know i have some "skill" / knowledge

the problem with making a skeleton is the fact that my composition method is inherently non-conducive to making one

I'll fuck up another chord to another song, and a melody will just pop into my head

I'll quickly get this new melody down in a fresh piano roll and just start throwing drums, bass, atmospherics, etc at it
maybe some buildups, a basic intro, and I don't even bother writing an exit

and then I never finish the song

yeah but that would make total sense if you would patch functions together, but they make a box out of every single line, most boxes just connect with a single thing, they should either allow a boxes-inside-boxes approach or text for inner boxes and connection for functions

also that way would allow refactoring

hey /mu/ I have a weird potential problem, so I'm working on an album with a friend and I'm currently just tracking all the instrumentation just to get a basic idea of the songs before we actually go into the studio.
After tracking guitar and bass for 6 songs, I realized that 3 of them are at the same BPM. Is this an issue? They all have different feels but I wasn't sure if this is in poor taste or something, I really dont want to retrack some songs at different tempos just for the sake of having them all be different.
Thoughts? Am I thinking way too into this shit?
>>

Yes it doesn't matter

when you go in i'd nudge the metronome a few bpm when the drummer goes in either way though just out of paranoia (tracking seperately i'd assume)
>>
>>73990111
Doesn't really matter if it feels right. Maybe space them out on the album at least. You can also change the BPM of the song by time compressing the final mix, but you can only change it by a few BPM before there's a noticeable change in quality. You shouldn't really have to do that though

if you want a little advice, stop being a little bitch, 10 sondcloud follows don't mean shit and they also aren't gonna drop from the clouds

1st of all, your music can be shit and you can have 100000000 follows and likes and shares, you don't get social media attention through quality, you get it through marketing skills

if you want likes engage in aggresive marketing of your music(brand), if you want music attention then set up a way to play live, practice it, and circle your local underground scene to listen to whats going on and networking with the other local musicians, if you don't want to play then skip the "set up a way to play live" and just focus on networking and producing local acts you like

Fuck anon, this is amazing. I think the tempo is perfect. I would be interested in hearing the acapella on top of this. The arrangement can suffice with the amount of layers it already has, but I don't think it would become too busy if you added a few more.

I absolutely love the breakbeat style drums and the hand percussion in the background. The use of the vocal samples is reserved and tasteful.

Did you create the ambient piano track and drums from scratch or are those the result of manipulating samples?

Truthfully I've been wanting to learn how to create music like this. I want to know how to get those stutter and tuned effects on the drums. I take it the "sound" of the piano loop is a result of some eq and maybe tape emulation?

Hey thanks man glad you can hear something you like in there. I actually posted the fucked up saturated version.
Don't expect you to listen again but just in case, this one is quite drastically different and, I hope, might let the other elements speak a lot more/ has a bunch more range. Apologies for mix up^^
Hope you get a chance ;

The percussion is probably better here. The horns have a different feel though. Neither better or worse, just something about the timbre changed. 1:10-1:55 or so is a little quiet in the context of the rest of the track here. But yeah, there's still groove. Some of the background keys remind me of Battles' song Tonto
>>
>>73993036
Much appreciated man will check that out right now
>>
>>73992530
started by searching for a sample.. found the piano/pad that im using throughout the whole tune, found the soundclash sample, added fx to every audio track, and then finally started adding drum hits and chopping breaks over it basically..
the fx on the piano pad is just uhh phaser, saturation, overdrive, EQ, reverb, delay, and then compression.. then i copy that fx chain to every audio track (for a unified sound) and just tweak/automate depending on the instrument track

>>73992505
usually you layer another kick sample below everything else to give it that extra punch.. which might be too dry from FX now that u mention it
but no basically i throw the whole breakbeat through the same fx chain

>>73992321
the ambient piano sample is from the intro of a mid-70s new age tune that i found from a recent compilation, i told the other guy what fx i threw over it
>>
>>73992321
oh also the breakbeat drums are just the amen, apache, and think break.. u can google "classic break pack" i think, if u dont have some of the essential jungle breakbeats yet
>>
hey ppl I haven't been here in a while but I've started becoming a grime DJ and producer in the last year

randomly found a song on youtube and thought I'd try flipping it, this is deffo not done maybe 40% there but tell me what you guys think of the core idea (the name is subject to change too)

haha thank u for the support. I'd happily do that but right now a majority of my tracks use samples so I'm v concerned about copyright when asking for money for my songs that use samples, isn't that an issue? I'm waiting until I churn out original songs on the regular and until I learn how to program synths properly that ain't happening lol

good idea actually the intro sounds 1000x more unique with just the raw sample I'll change that now,

Hello, first time posting in one of these threads. I don't know any of the music theory stuff but I'm trying to make some weird jazzy stuff in Ableton. Basically I'm just wondering if what I have so far tracks and makes sense outside of my head. Thanks

>>
>>73995181
oh highpass.. not lowpass hehe

It's known that nobody would get into shit if he sold his music made with pirated DAW, but can somebody sue you for pirated plugins?

I know we have talked about this already, but I maybe forgot - how could anyone know if you used pirated, idk, EastWest library? Somebody said there are watermarks, but what does that mean? Can they be heard in an exported file I upload to soundcloud or what? Obviously I wouldn't show my DAW or share my project files. And ofc, you can recognize sounds from specific plugins, but would somebody actually ask me to see if I have a license? How could anyone know that I pirated something instead of buying it?

To be clear, if I ever sold my music and did this seriously, I'd buy more stuff, but I can't spend this much money on all those libraries atm.
>>
>>73995301
I can't tell if that is one piece or multiple ideas in there, but yeah, just keep working on it, but I'd advise you to learn at least some theory. There is no form in there, a lot of random sounds and notes, and you mix genres every few seconds. Some parts sound like jazz, others not quite.
>>
>>73995301
I'm not too sure if 0:00 - 0:21 works but im digging the rest of the track from 0:22 onwards. I especially like the last part, sounds very sweet and upbeat.
>>
I attempted to try and make a downtempo kinda track, lemme know what you guys think.

>>
>>73996009
>>73996359
Thanks for listening + feedback. I tried to make it more cohesive by limiting myself to five instrumental tracks but I will work on making the first two sections less busy (especially 0:12-0:21). Regarding the formlessness, that is very much intentional.

i really like what you're doing, it sounds like the residents and napalm death (you suffer). off the top of my head. Even though the actual sounds may not be the best quality, i don't even mind because what you're doing sounds interesting to me.

what do you think of this: https://clyp.it/rloyeajm

hey y'all i'm releasing an ep early next month and this is one of the singles. About 40% done. Still a lot needed to be done, but wanna just get general opinions on it.
>>
https://clyp.it/arboeudv

plese insult me. also tell me what you think
>>
>>73998298
Yea this is dope dude, i'm digging it.
One thing i noticed was that after the intro, in the main part, it seems quite sparse and reserved, melody wise and the only thing noticeable is the drums. Not necessarily a bad a thing tho.
>>
>>73998560
idk i dont have an opinion on it cause its too short and is kinda tasteless imo.
>>
>>73998676
>https://clyp.it/arboeudv
thanks. yeah i bet you're right, this is the third thing i try to create in a DAW so it must be just a boring short track. just curious to see if i did something so bad it could hurt people ears
>>
>>73998744
Its not that it hurts my ears, its that its too short to judge it. It has potential cause the sound itself is nice, with the raindrop effects going on, but you should try and incorporate it into a track.
>>
>>73998800
really? i thought it wasn't even worth trying and thta it was already way too bad. thanks! i will try then, i'd like to give it a bit of taste because it sounds way too anonymus now
>>
>>73998664
Thanks for listening man! And partly the reason why is because I still have to sing over it and planning to doing some harmonies so I wanted to have enough space in the mix so i wouldn't have to edit so much out.
>>
>>73995971
bro torrent. try before you buy. there are tutorials of martin garrix using pirated material. There's picture of Kanye googling best VSTS with a Piratebay window tab right next to it.

Having the vsts/plugins won't guarantee that you make great music.
>>
>>73999272
I was asking IF anyone can know the song uses torrented plugins and HOW. I do torrent, that's why I am asking.

It's true it won't help you make great music, but it certainly helps a lot - didn't think it will until I tried high quality stuff. It makes a HUGE difference.
>>
>>73999338
lol it's bullshit, people dodge youtube copyright by just pitching it up or down like 2 semitones, you think some secret inaudible "audio watermark" is gonna survive all the processing you would have to do to something you wanted to release commercially?
>>
>>73999338
also how would it even work? it would have to be in all copies of the pirated and non-pirated libraries and they would have to constantly be paying for whatever service to be scanning releases for those watermarks and then cross-referencing any hits with their customer database... no company that makes vst has enough money to poay for all those security measures that you could still have some layer of plausible deniability for if you tried hard enough
>>
>>73999924
I know, I also think it's bullshit, but I'm hearing otherwise from multiple people and they never explain it.
>>
>>73999992
its vst companies trying to scare you into buying their shit
>>
lads, everyone uses pirated software. relax.
devs don't care and certainly do not have the time to distribute illegal, watermarked versions of their own stuff. think about this for a second - half the releases you have come from scene groups - what you're implying is that there's a massive conspiracy of audio developers, who've infiltrated the scene by creating multiple scene groups.

oh and yeah
>hey dev, let's put watermarks on our libraries, synths and effects that can would be rendered completely useless if anyone stuck almost any other audio effect in front of them

pay for your shit when you can afford to, but don't worry about it if you can't.
>>
what do you anons think about this? I'm not sure how to feel about it. Yesterday I thought it was mediocre, but now I'm thinking it's pretty good, like i would listen to it if it had vocals on it.

favorite distortion/saturation vst? preferably pirateable if it costs money. i'm considering izotope trash.

mmm this is nice
>>
>>74001056
highly recommend trash 2. more control, more versatility.
>>
>>74001056
softube saturation knob. what it lacks in controls (it's literally just one knob and one 3-way selector switch) it makes up for in sounding good on just about everything

android
>>
>>74000932
buy a jazz guitar
learn to play
or find some soft synth of one if the have any
>>
>>74001056
trash + trash 2 (they're different enough to warrant having both), ohmicide (old, awful interface, but probably still has the best sounding algos), fxpansion's maul, effects pedals as inserts from guitar rig and amplitube.

you can also abuse saturators, some compressors and tape emulations to get some pretty good stuff (see: dmg audio's compassion, u-he's presswerk and satin and even good old vintage warmer)

i need recommendations for a strings library:
it won't actually be used for passages of music but mostly as sound effect stingers, so having a decent number of articulations is top priority. anyone got ideas?

>>
>>74002262
I've been trying Anon, it's like, I hate my voice. I screw words up and sound like a fucking retard, so I try to enunciate every word so that won't happen, but then I sound white. You saying I should just focus on flow and worry about the other shit later?
>>
>>74001975
very helpful with what you've said on distortion! my recommendations won't be as good.

i'm not really sure what you mean by sound effect stingers, but i know that this orchestra has thousands of orchestral samples that i like to use in spectral/granular synthesis to make strings or what have you:
http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/explore/sound_samples
>>
>>74002345
did the same except i only upgraded to hs50ms. same result

as soon as i got a shitty little 2i2 and learned what i realized never to trust any gear advice online- it's crawling with new producers and guys with low standardswho regurgitate opinions and more than likely don't know any better

>>74001732
>jazz guitar
>tone knob
>>
>>74002444
that's link's really good, cheers.

stingers are basically very short musical (or non-musical) phrases. easiest to think of old loony tunes or disney shorts where you'd have, for example, a string section pizzacato a chord to indicate a character doing/feeling something (e.g. surprise, fear etc)

oh and also i should mention the positive grid bias stuff as well in line with amplitube and guitar rig. i've never used them personally but they look quite promising.

How much is it to upgrade from Ableton Intro to Standard? Is it just minus the price of Intro?

What does /prod/ do for inspiration? I'm flat broke and quitting drinking(due only to being broke). I don't even want to play or learn anything lately and I have no pleasant contact with anyone aside from my family.

idk how deep in you are but i was feeling the same way when i was on the liquor man. i'd stay in bed drinking sleeping and generally being a piece of shit letting my musicianship fade- the "inspiration" comes back when you go dry...

i was helped a lot by revisiting works of art (music and movies mostly) that i loved as a teenager, or just stuff i forgot i loved.... eh
