Just a warning, I'm a complete black metal pleb even as a longtime metal fan. I listen to loads of harsh vocals but shrieks still take me by surprise haha. Never found any I like besides a few Emperor songs. Is any of that a good place to start?

Honestly, blackgaze is black metal on easy mode, so there isn't really a bad place to start. Oathbreaker is more crust punk than black metal, so if you like that kinda stuff, they're good. Woods of Desolation will probably give you the most representative, straightforward idea of the genre. That Alcest album is beautiful, but SUPER light, probably even too light for some extreme metal fans.
