If you think about it, before the big breakthrough of hippie culture in the 60s the left really wasn't permitted at all in the cultural industries. A lot of prominent figures were conservative. But yeah, especially in the late seventies and early eighties the left (primarily in the form of Punk). As with any system the richest figures rise to the top, and basically became todays liberals.

There's defo some assertions that Adam Curtis makes that I'm not 100% on board with, but that's basically it.

I think it's worth pointing out that most musicians/bands typically labelled as "right-wing" (Melvins, Zappa, Billy Corgan, Mustaine, etc.) would best be described as libertarians rather than traditional "conservatives"
