The problem with Elio is that he's /mu/ incarnate.
Most of his personal humor is /mu/, he's a gigantic music nerd.
One of his first concerts consisted in him coming out on stage and essentially calling the entire audience a bunch of plebs (jokingly, but also not really, essentially he got away with it).

He tried to have a show on national television but almost all of the humor in it was tied to music inside jokes so it ended pretty quickly.
A lot of his recent stuff is too absorbed in inside jokes and musical jokes, as he's growing older he can't relate to the common listener anymore.

Basically he knows too much about music for his own good and he's becoming unfunny because of it.
