Mozart's Requiem was finished by his student!

Well, the song is actually almost finished. I just need an oscillator melody and some minor vocal things and it's done. The five pages of lyrics for the first part of the song are all recorded which was the bulk of the work.

I mean I'd still make this kind of stuff, just with more variety and some louder kind of material. I'm pretty limited by my living situation in the sense that fingerpicked acoustic stuff and relatively subdued vocals is the most I can do without pissing off my neighbors. So I guess that's related to money.

Since you are clearly having some problem in regards to even most simplest forms of critique I'd like to share my mind on your release which I've heard yesterday (that is still stuck, now crushed [by the way]). By the way, that's some issue title.

>First of all - the Bandcamp design is terrible. The background image is shit and the banner makes it all but better. Anyway, I've heard few of your tracks and I think I got why you can't hear vocals on my release since your stuff is obnoxiously loud and annoying. Pass it through some EQ filters because after just a few minute listen through my headphones I got a small migraine, not even joking. The whole sound seems to be mixed weirdly as well. Some sounds break into another and not in a good way. If you wanted to disorientate the listener then good job, I guess. Also, that asking price - either you are quite a big ego or you are out of your mind if you think somebody is going to buy this for almost 8 dollars. If this was a bass therapy then I don't want a new one any time soon.

I'd like to see how you'll respond to that one.

>you started by judging a couple photos and it's lack of symetry (these things can and do get changed)
A visual part of a release is really quite important. Same as the visual part of a page as a whole. Put yourself in a position of a potential listener. Would you give your music a shot provided with such visual, let's face it, mess? I couldn't and I feel like most of people won't even touch it. Looks are important so that's why I've posted the critique for that. I would suggest changing at least the BC page to look at least average and less like a mess.
>I'm rather disoriented most of the time myself and I'm trying to release that into music so yes.
This won't help you. People like consistency and clarity from their music. They want to know what they are getting themselves into. By providing an extreme disorientation you putting yourself at risk of somebody just not wanting this to listen to your stuff anymore. Work on it because it's not working out in your favor whatsoever.
>7.77 for luck in heaven cause I sure as shit barely have any here
That's just looks bad, especially seeing how you started just few months ago (to the best of my knowledge). Even I'm not doing such crap. It also excludes any potential "downloaders" from getting your release. It's all around bad tactic so getting this "for luck" is kind of shooting yourself in a foot.
>also what the fuck are you talking about me not hearing vocals on your release lol.
Well, you did. Let me rephrase to your comment from, well, yesterday:
>>this could have potential if you actually mixed your voice into where we can hear you :O
>you couldnt tell me a single thing to mix differently other than add more EQ, very specific sir.
You weren't specific with your comment towards me so why should I be? I've already said my gripe - your sounds are fighting with each other creating a big dissonance and unenjoyable experience. So I suggested EQ for correction and better mixing. How is this suggestion bad again?

Outside of a sound provided (that kind of pop rubs me the wrong way - way, WAY too indie, Eric's right) and occasional lyrical gripes I'm gonna say - this is good. Production's awesome, the vocals aren't bad at all (pat on the back for the vocalist) and it has a very nice atmosphere. Would love to see bassoon more incorporated and more fleshed out to the track itself (maybe spice it up with effects a bit) but it's overall a very, very nice start-up!
>>
>>73948598
I say multiple times this is therapy, I'm a mess releasing my mess. The album cover for still stuck holds more meaning as compared to aesthetic. It's a bit dissonant in almost majority tracks yes, just like how im clashing internally. things take a lot more symbolism in my work and I feel you're disregarding that for necessity of a clean look and symmetry. Cleanliness will come in due time, but not until I am internally. I started a little over 6 months ago, things will be continually mixed to fit things of your taste hopefully as well as others more similar to you.
or did you just say my mastering was bad simply cause you couldve turned up some gain on your mic?
>>
>>73949116
Saying "It's MY STYLE!" is what holds most people back.
I say that because I've been in that place as well for too long. Strive for more and don't ever be too content about anything you do. You can always do better.
>>
>>73948871
Thanks for the feedback, though I'm a bit confused about what you mean about it being too indie. Could you elaborate at all? I think maybe I know what you're talking about, but I'd like to hear what you were thinking so I can correct it in the future.
>>
>>73949174
im striving for better and I believe it will happen. but doing things in a very particular manner and getting shit on for lack of seeing literal therapy.
Therapy is my style, perfection might arise eventually but yes for my most recent album I embody a strewn, forceful mess with but potential nobody really knows yet. mentoring and specific critique is welcomed and I will make sure to work with in future release.
>>
>>73946183 back for feedback

>>73949116
therapy you're charging money for, let alone around 8 bucks for? fuck off, dude. you have a massive ego. on top of that, you're getting pissy about others critiquing your "therapy" and your entire way of going about things.

>>73948649
i'm enjoying this, but "neoclassical indie folk pop" sounds...really overcomplicated for what this is. were you just missing commas?

i like the vocals, any of my gripes are more personal preference. this feels very mazzy star influenced.

biggest criticism I have is that it feels incredibly safe, and the way this is set up it feels like the vocals and lyrics are supposed to drive it. and while the vocals are really good, they don't stand out in and of themselves, and the lyrics are kinda bland too. still, keep on, the tin whistle part in particular was really nice.

>>73948153
enjoy this, even if it's a little cheesy. reminds me of coffinshakers in terms of the whole theatrically dark look. fyi, you can put covers on youtube as long as you aren't charging for them.

This is my last comment for today because if I'm going to get on like this we will end up sounding like a broken records.
Morpheus said it best - I can see a merit in you releasing your music and you put feelings and the way you are right now into your music. And that's fine. However this does not exclude you from getting feedback and bad reception. And the way you present your music is important to me because, honestly, that's the first thing I see. It may be a Therapy to you. But that doesn't mean I suppose to GET why your sound is dissonant, why your music is such a mess. It's your goal as an artist of any kind to show me your narrative and it being easily understood by the listener. From your music I couldn't get why you are currently suffering. Why are you currently in a bad mood. None of that. And you are striking at me by providing my personal opinion about your release and saying "But it's because I'm a mess". Everybody was a mess at some point in their life. This is not an excuse, it's not some sort of joker card for you to be blocked from being passive-aggressive towards me. And, again, you may say this music has a shitton of symbolism, that it has meaning. But I, as a listener, can't see them. I just can't. And as a music maker you should show me that if you include said things into your music, I think that's a fair assumption to take. I wish you luck in making things straight but you have to really learn how to take things back a little and stop throwing "It's my style guys!" narrative because people like me will show you that your style is poor as of now. And no matter how much you believe that you found a stylistic goldmine there will be people who will say it's bad.
>>
where is a place that i can shill my album besides /mu/ and reddit subforums? i used to use the "pay to play" tactic on last.fm until they stopped doing that, and with soundcloud dying i am left with limited options.

what do you guys think? i also use tidal discovery to get unto spotify and itunes and other streaming sites but they give little in regards to promotion. i've tried facebook and instagram, twitter, but all they do is piss off and annoy non-musicians when i post a new project.

what are some other options?

I said because it's bad, there is no internal motive, no conspiracy about it. Gub said you have a terrible sound and I agree with him. And I've also addressed why your sound is currently bad. Being passive-aggressive isn't helping.

Watterson (>>73949623) said it bluntly and I didn't want to be that blunt with you. But he gets it and he knows his shit. You can make a style which appeals to people, which makes them engaged. But if you are going apeshit over a very polite (for a 4chan standards) comment then I can't possibly imagine you getting something more out of the less polite comments in here. Seriously, reconsider your approach, your standards and your ego. I do have a good faith that you will find a way to see what I was implying with my first comment. That is all.

By "too indie" I've meant that your release sounds eerily similar to the indie rock/indie pop music I've heard. You guys have an extremely similar structure, feel and sound which I've heard a lot in that kind of music. Which isn't a huge problem for a start up but it's something worth consider in order to not end up like many others before you - a copy of a copy. That's the best way I can explain it and I hope you understand my case.
Looking forward to your next release!

best answer desu? not the internet. get involved with your local music scene with whatever genre you play. even if it's a good drive aways. unless you make incredible music and get lucky, you won't get popular otherwise.

i'm very involved with my local music scene. i play some originals at dj nights my friends and i have going every other weekend at a club around my university. i've had write-ups in the local paper. but i am looking for a cozy place to promote my music online the way soundcloud and last.fm used to be. i could pull in tons of fans by having my music show up randomly on someone's radio feed.

just a place online where i can upload it and know that my music will reach someone. bandcamp is a great "shop", but that's all it is.

i make 70s AOR inspired dance music if that helps with my genre.

hmm, that's tougher desu. have you done research on the blogs releasing similar music to your type of stuff? that helps for sure. internet radios too, if you submit to those. aside from that it's really just a waiting game till you break through

shit's donation breh, I've been out of work due to physical injury. you can listen to my stuff an infinite amount of times and have all my shit for the same price as my album if you really wanna pay something with a set price. i dont think i've ever once said my music is better than anybody elses, or that its even good. again, therapy. futhermore, my therapy. everybody has a different outlet and approach their outlets in different manners. i treat music entirely as therapy, and I've been in the shitter so things will resonate otherwise

yeah i've been doing research and submitting to blogs. i've had write-ups by a few blogs (some with official pages and some which are tumblrs). i appreciate them greatly but they are ineffective in bringing in traffic to my bandcamp - even they they are embedding the image. many of them who have written for me are critical of my work too, which is great because it helps me improve. a lot of my listeners (friends from around the uni) post my stuff on their feeds but it's really just a circle of friends who are aware of each other's work.

the news about soundcloud is disheartening. very tempted to go the pr route and jump right into the big leagues but it feels like i'm faking it. paying a pr person who in turn (possibly) pays a larger music website to showcase my work. i've started working with a vocalist who goes to the same uni as me and i don't want the world to miss out on what an incredible vocalist she is. i feel obligated to take all this seriously now for her.

You might get more exposure by remixing other artists. Especially in electronic music that is the usual method of pollination.
