Shouldn't the term be be proto-black metal, instead of the first wave? Most of the first wave bands had absolutely nothing to do with each other, and while Bathory had the basic sound down, and Sarcofago were halfway there, bands like Venom, Celtic Frost, and Mercyful Fate don't even really sound like black metal.
Their relationship to black metal totally parallels the relationship between punk and proto-punk groups like The Stooges, New York Dolls, The Velvet Underground, MC5, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I love these bands, especially Celtic Frost. My favorite black metal bands even tend to be the blackened death metal bands that harken back to this old sound. But the whole concept of the first wave seems incorrect.
Yeah, I agree. The second wave of the norwegian bands was the first true scene with a defined sound, and should be the first "wave".

Agreed, exactly. Fenriz already gets a lot of credit, but if anything he's still underrated since he was so critical to the formation of the genre.
