Progressive rock is among the weakest forms of music out there. For one thing it lacks the energy of rock music. Another thing is despite being influenced by classical music, it lacks the depth concerning melodic development and harmonic progression of classical music. It's the worst of both worlds.
Artists like Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band and Henry Cow on their better albums do progressive rock much better than progressive rock does. The music is more energetic than progressive rock, more complex, and more innovative thus more progressive.
