The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

>Avalon Emerson - Whities 007
The best thing I've heard from this label so far. The Frontier is an incredible track, a bouncy bass and driving beat with an incredible synth melody over the top. I think Kowton's Glock & Roll is the best track I've heard on this label but this is a very close second. What sets this a part though is that the rest keeps up with quality set up by the opener as 2000 Species of Cacti is incredible and it closes with synth melody of The Frontier which I could happily listen to forever.
4

>Quirke - Whities 007
This ones a bit of a mixed bag. The first track is more ambient with just a whirling synth line with no beat behind it, its pleasant to listen to but isn't too interesting overall. The closer Sa45 Circles is a really solid track though, it has a great driving bassline and a haunting synth in the background repeated throughout. It saves this from being the only real dud on this chart so far.

dang
r+7 has always been one of his that just never really hit me
it always sounded pretty uhhh whats the word maybe structureless? and of course ambient music does not typically have much of a structure but there's something specific about r+7 that is different in that way. it kind of sounds like he was playing around in his daw and made a cool sound with a synth patch so he just did a little ditty with it and then stuck that to another random part.
its a little difficult to explain. i used to feel this way about all of his music but after a while replica and garden of delete grew on me a lot so i probably just need to hear it some more and get more familiar.

Unfortunately I must disappoint some members of this esteemed community by revealing that the Biosphere I'm listening to is in fact an album by Cobalt Road and is not the artist who recorded Substrata (though that album is still very nice).

It's quite nice so far, a beautiful ambient first track and a nice little concept going, but perhaps a bit VST-y now? Wait and see to find out!
>>
>>73929016
I'd say it's more composed than Replica. Dan's said that too. But I also think that's the point of R+7 (maybe OPN in general)--that it's a representation of consciousness. Have you watched Memory Vague? It's all this hazy stuff that inhabits the grey area between conscious and unconscious experience. Just my take. Others have said similar.

>>
>>73930552
weeell the lyrics are so-and-so sometimes, like "I've smuggled myself into new nationalities" which is just one of the weirdest written lines ever
And some tracks are just ok

Overall though it's an extremely solid album for the genre, and it has some real bangers that always impresses me (like Holiday, Red Letter Day, and Close To Home)
All and all though I used to have it at 4/5 but listening to it now I realize quite a few songs, especially in the second half, is kinda just average
So 3.5 it is now, if you like the genre then it's definitely one of the best
>>
>>73930604
Le Tigre is fun and agitated riot grrrl with political undertones, definitely listen to it.

And yeah Angel Dust is still p good, the rhythm section is great.

Are Troggs and Centurions old beat/garage rock records?

LISTENALONG

I compiled (while drunk) some tracks by the mastermind CMAZ and his project LSO TDW, created in the early 00s in a town in the middle of nowhere in eastern Poland. A homegrown art-brut edition of polish rap, completely separated from the rest of the scene. They don't do albums (at least not this decade), hence the format.

Im providing a youtube playlist, keep in mind that videos are essential to the experience.

Cobalt Road / STAQQ OVERFLO - Biosphere

Very nice! So there's a good sound and a good concept to justify the sound. It's ambient vaporwave, but it's cleanly presented and stylised instead of the typical fuzzed out, roughly cut style that's closer to plunderphonics. This pristine, quite-obviously-a-modern-DAW aesthetic works because the album's concept is that it's a soundtrack to a nature simulation that was built in the far future after the Earth ended, allowing you to revisit biomes that no longer exist. And so the sound ties in because it builds up that imagery of fake perfection, of a world that can only be a simulation, so there's melancholy in here too. It strikes a good dynamic balance in that the new age foundations to provide the melody aren't prominent enough to make it a happy record, but also the ambient overtones don't dominate enough to turn it boring. Overall I would definitely recommend this to vaporwave fans, but it might not resonate with you as much if your go-to is the more abstract and staticky type of stuff. 3.5 stars

John Vanderslice - Emerald City
(from rando library grabs chart)

okay-I-guess 2007 indie rock. Sounds like the Decemberists without the antique sailor schtick. maybe some flirting with noisey sounds, but not enough to save it. Sounds like he wants to experiment but he's well aware that more accessible means more fans. Compromised and gentle, what a drag. White Dove is pretty cool. 3.0-

>Simon Finn - Pass the Distance
>Psych Folk

Finn's voice seesaws between billowing smoke and Alt-J if they were a group back then. He wakes up on Jerusalem, but the rest is tolerable at best. Some songs are simply too long-winded for their lack of content, even when the lyrics themselves are the most substantial part of this album. It's just one of those folk albums that make me feel lethargic.

4/10

>Lift To Experience - The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads
>Shoegaze, Post Rock

Really just a solid concept album, that drags ever so slightly because of its length. Unique story, enjoyable playing.

7/10

>Ultimate Spinach - Behold And See
>Psych rock

The spoken/singing in the first few tracks doesn't quite work for me on tracks like Jazz Thing, but I liked Visions of Young. Mind Flowers rebounds the album with some actual trippy stuff + actual narration. Suite: Genesis of Beauty also functions well as a longer track.

I suppose it's just the shorter, more traditional rock here that bores me. If there were more tracks like the ones mentioned above, I think I would have really liked this.

5/10

>Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
>Post-Rock, Ambient

Astonishingly colorful and soft-spoken improvisations, organized from hours of recordings. The group couldn't even tour live to support the album, simply because Mark Hollis was unwilling/unsure of how to replicate its contents in performance. An easily enjoyable peak for and "dreamy" post-rock, with New Wave influences.

I can recognize why some listeners would find this pompous or corny, but it's kind of crazy how this sold poorly for its time.

>Gong - You
>Spacey Prog Rock

I like the cover art, not only because it's flashy, but because it captures the music's essence. Mysterious like the temple with spacey synths and drones, between playful and bouncy melodies implied by the text fonts.

The jazz influences on Master Builder and A Sprinkling of Clouds are what push this above mediocre for me. While the percussion and bass jaunt about in various times on Isle of Everywhere, synths warp in and out besides ritualistic caws. And of course, a light sax pops in halfway through.

and goddamn I just love old and new synths

Coil - Horse Rotorvator (1986)
>industrial

My new favorite studio Coil release. Presents a perfect balance between spooky, magical soundscaping and blistering industrial rock, the latter being a style that Coil never really worked with, done masterfully here. The spooky MIDI soundscaping is sometimes overdone and admittedly quite cheesy (a problem I have with The Ape of Naples too), but that's mostly kept to a minimum, and the more brutal, bare-bones industrial is done really well.

mixtape tourney update

psot-feelist came through with a killer mix of lo-fi indie that includes bugskull, hood, luxurious bags, supreme dicks. I didn't like the opening song, but it really efficiently set the tone for the rest of the tape. great work feelsy!!

for the 4 of you that made it to round 2, here are your restrictions:
your mix must be under 1 hour
must have an oil painting from this century as the album art
must fit one of these themes (more than one person may pick the same theme, don't worry)
- high-energy/party
- love songs (happy and sad, not just one)
- only introductions, interludes, and/or outros
- free-folk/new weird america/freak folk/avant-folk

>Paul Simon - Graceland
>Pop Rock

I was ambivalent about this at first, but the 3rd song is where it began to click with me. I'm seeing a pattern, in that EthyBoy enjoys the straight delivered, almost narrating types of singing. Paul Simon maintains this style in delivering his long verses. The controversy behind the album is equally interesting.

If there's something that keeps me from rating higher, it's simply the older production methods (snare + reverb). Don't know why people complain about how corny this album sounds when the majority of music of its time (and beyond) were just as vulnerable to feeling limited in scope.

6+/10

>Grateful Dead - Cornell 5/8/77
>Rock

Ethy my boy

At this point in time I'd say you have the same taste as my dad

Because holy heck this is just light rock

It's super clean sounding for a recording, to the point where I too would be questioning if this was actually live. The undeniable shouts of college students says otherwise.

It's unfortunately just as stimulating as the Beatles, which is to say not much. Its length doesn't work for a listener like me, much like Double Nickels on the Dime. There are a few moments of enjoyment in the improvisation and playing between the group, but it's simply too buried. That, and I suppose I still have yet to hear a jam band I thoroughly enjoyed; my opinion of Causa Sui has waned, since Ethy's last recc.

"Alright, now take a step back...All these people in the front are getting smashed"

just like this frickin album and its tracks

5/10

>Michael Chapman - Rainmaker
>British Folk Rock, Blues

Sizable folk/country album. You Say it features Chapman's slightly accented and drawling voice alone, in contrast to It Didn't Work Out's sunny pop-rock guitars and harmonized chorus. The rest of the album alternates through solo guitar work and kind of cheesy songwriting.

Not at all bad, just not my thing.

>Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
>Jazz Fusion

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DWjsWVvn08&

The fuck is the big meme about this album. It's just Frank Zappa at his most easily enjoyable sound. There's a lot of Zappa-esque instrumentation scattered through these tracks, and Jazz Fusion fits his typical off-kilter melodies and sounds from Mothers of Invention very well. If only he didn't love aligning those new instruments with the melody right away, which can become irritating.

Otherwise, hey. It's a Zappa record that steps off its high horse for some fun and memorable jams. Favorite track is The Gumbo Variations.

I had good momentum with this up until a few days ago. I've had job interviews, I potentially have something cool lined up here. And then I also spent a few whole days starting the recording process for my next album and it's shaping up nicely.

>Hilary Hahn - Hilary Hahn Plays Bach (1997)

I listened to this a few days ago, so this is all based off memory, fyi. I don't have as good an ear for classical music as I'd like, but I can recognize Bach as a step above other classical composers. My understanding is that his music was more logical and technical than emotionally-centered like many of his contemporaries. It's all performed solo here on violin by a teenage girl who's able to load an incredible amount of feeling into her playing without making it sound too sappy, which is something child musicians often can't grasp. As others have pointed out, the sense of particular seasons is extremely strong and especially
Partita No. 3 visualizes an Autumn scene. I'll come back to this.
7.5/10

Nefertiti now, then what?
>>
>>73940915
solid score and thoughts my dude

I'd say Bach has a solid balance of emotion and technicality tho (at least on those compositions) but it definitely was more technical and complex than those around him ye

do The Slits next desu
>>
>Canned Heat - Live at Topanga Corral (1972)

This is not terribly inspired or innovative or any other superlative like that, but I happen to believe hoping for any of those traits is missing the point of Canned Heat by a wide margin. It's plain and simply blues rock. These guys are most known through a close association with the hippie community in the late 60s with hits like "Going Up the Country" and "On the Road Again", which are atypical of the electric blues that they would mostly play and only play on this set. And again, it's really all just about the feeling, nothing else. That being said, they weren't on like most of their contemporaries. All that stands out to me musically, as everyone will point out, is Henry Vestine on lead guitar who sounds like an absolute blues master all throughout.
5.5/10

>Jim Ford - Harlan County (1969)

It's this close harmony, extreme Nashville sound blend of country rock, all in a somewhat hokey way that lacks soul. But I think Jim Ford on his own may be interesting from what I've sampled, so I'll look there next.
5/10

>Ibrahim Maalouf - Kalthoum (2015)

This is pretty cool and I may choose it for the listenalong. Don't be thrown off by misleading the "fusion" tag--it's a blend of spiritual jazz with traditional Arabic music from this Lebanese trumpeter who's all over lately. It's a super moody, emotional suite. Released on Impulse.

>Miles Davis - Nefertiti (1968)

This is another Miles album I've heard an untold amount of times that just sort of goes in one ear and out the other. It's not to discount it because I suspect that in some oblique way that that's the aim. It's subtle, so I can't fault anyone but myself if I don't listen close enough. I haven't been able to get much of a grasp on this transitional stretch of Miles' career where it's an absolute knock-out all-star band playing stuff that ventures away from earlier cool jazz, but only in the most subdued way possible. It's like they have the vision of the off-the-wall modal madness that would start the next year as something conceivable but for what ever reason don't have the gall to actually pull it off yet. The roots of the band's eventual sound are all here, nonetheless: listen to Miles' solo in "Madness" as a subtle hint at what he would be getting at shortly afterwards. In my opinion, everyone here--Tony Williams, Miles, certainly--would just explode with confidence after this.
6/10

>The Slits - Cut (1979)

This is something I heard and rated last year, but sometimes you get the hunch there may be something more to appreciate and that more attention is necessary. There's plenty to post-punk I just don't naturally get but am nonetheless interested in. I gravitate naturally to dub and reggae (unless it's by Japanese rock band, Fishmans) but the trajectory of punk that incorporated it seems so odd and positive to me. Anyway, the punk influence is not so strong here outside of cosmetic touches compared to obvious reggae rhythms and the thumping dub-like bass throughout. Really, the rock influence I hear is more of the Talking Heads and Can variety. The vocal melodies are extremely strange and it's hard to pin down exactly what mood these oddly labyrinthine guitar lines are ever getting at, but in spite of that (because of that?) I find this compelling.

most of it was pretty standard new wave, and it was pretty good. "millions" and "complicated game" go on for way too long tho, and even if they didnt, they're still my least favorites off this record. other than that it's pretty solid

>I've had that Noir Desir album in my library since my first year on /mu/ but still haven't listened
>is it good

Well I listened to it a couple years ago and didn't really care for it then at all
But now I relistened a couple weeks ago and it really clicked. The last track (L'Europe) is amazing, 23 minutes long but built really well
And the most famous track (Le vent nous portera) is great too

Overall it's kinda like Radiohead if Radiohead were actually good imo

>Minor Science – Whities 008
This guy clearly has a lot of potential but his stuff isn’t really doing too much for me overall. This release is pretty much all about the A side, Naturally Spineless, it has a really nice bass line that carries it throughout. The other track is decent but nothing to really write home about
2
>Reckonwrong – Whities 009
The Passions of Pez is a bizarre kinda New Wave-ish track, not quite what I expected but it’s really interesting and and still somewhat danceable. The other track is a lot more of what I expected, a nice off-kilter house track. This single is a step down from his other release on this label but it’s not bad by any means.

>Misteur Valaire - Golden Bombay
At first this just comes off as slick, "fun" downtempo, but it's really not good at all. The vocal samples generally don't add anything of value to the songs, and they're manipulated in the same ways every time which gets old fast. The melodies tend to either be cheap sound synths or lazily repeated jazz samples(?), and the guest features are horrible.
2

>Senking - Pong
This might just be a matter of taste, but I think that the dubstep bassline hogs the spotlight here. On most of the songs it's overbearing to the point of being obnoxious, and ruins what could've been a very nice downtempo ambient album.

I have a horrible memory when it comes to remembering songs, so even though I've listened to every oxbow studio album (except for let me be a woman), I could only recognize a handful.

Frank's Frolic
A Cold and Well Lit Place
Other People
Sunday (their encore)
I think I heard a bit of Angel as well

>what were the highlights?

I don't know where to start. I managed to get really close to the stage, which proved to be the best decision of the night. The bassist, guitarist, drummer and a few staff members were setting up the stage. Eugene didn't come on stage until the equipment was ready, and his arrival was accompanied with a couple of lit incense sticks and a haunting ditty played on the bass.

He lumbered on stage wearing a suit vest, bow tie, a bowler hat and a bottle of wine. After muttering a few phrases (that of which I don't remember), the music started. It was some of the heaviest, loudest, riff-laden rock music I have ever listened to live. Eugene was incredibly charismatic and energetic. He would take off another article of clothing after every song, and did so until he only wore a suit vest as a top (he kept his pants on and everything). The front row was occasionally showered with spit.

The audience called for an encore after their last song, and they played until the lights were cut. When they turned off his mic, Eugene threw the entire thing down and performed without it. The entire show was non-stop hype.

I met Eugene after the show. We talked briefly about the performance, and I got him to sign a cd that I bought at the venue (he was glad that I bought a physical copy of his work). He seems like a pretty chill guy.

I forgot to mention that there were three opening acts. I might talk about them more when I post my chart again.

Tbh 1984's Oceania was great. Winston was just a petite bourgeois whiny little brat. The book can be read as commentary on the mentality of the petty bourgeoisie in the aftermath of the revolution. They resent the new system, and interpret everything it does in a negative light. They idealize the past, and long to have it back, without any consideration of what that would do to people other than themselves. They seek to overthrow the new system, but are eventually brought into the fold, with some assistance from a psychologist. That's clearly not the way Orwell wanted the book to be read, but you can read it that way, if you want.

this is just kinda something that's bound to happen when you put yourself within direct access of everybody you love and hate 24/7. shit's creepy. i want to be a shop keep in iowa or something when i get older. i want to be able to observe without falling in. i've heard michigan's good for that.

i will also either delete my facebook or severely prune it down after both my parents die, assuming it won't be gone by then. they, plus a few other people who would get me leaving, are the only reason i'm forced to check that trash daily.

Same. I left the big city myself. Too many people

i wouldnt know, i've never listened to an audiobook. but yeah i understand some readers are slower and sometimes you'll come across words or phrases you need to look up so it's not optimal for most people

i'm /jersey/ at the moment, which is possibly the worst possible state my type could be in. too many people. everything reads as dull, tiny imitations of what other states are doing better.
where you at rn? only asking because i need as many opinions of where to run off to as i can get.

puerto rico ;) theres actually quite a sizeable scene for your type of dumb post internet weird electronic shit, but it does head towards noise most of the time so idk if thats your thing

plus if youre a middle class white kid you could (kinda) live like a king here

It's called memri tv? Lmao I don't know this shit
>>73952881
Sure, on a smaller scale. It's like when people talk disparagingly bout a village mentality. Maybe it's worse online, maybe not. That great Jon Ronson for a couple years ago called So You've Been Publically Shamed talks about how public witch trials have effectively made a return in the digital age with people taking up arms against people who tweeted a racy joke at some point or United Airlines for a gaffe that's been blown out of proportion. It just brings out dumb susceptibility in people for whatever reason

Come to Maine, homie. I lived in NYC until recently. Would you believe you're being robbed of affordable property (+everything else), scenery, and room to breathe?

>how's the air quality?
even in the metropolitan areas you'll be breathing some real good stuff, especially up in the mountains where the island hasnt been completely industrialized yet

theres a lot more stuff to worry about like mosquitoes, a murder rate of about 22/100,000 and a very very corrupt system but hey at least medical weed is legal

theres already a lot of rodriguez here you can be the next one :o

gay marriage is legal
you'll be made fun of and stereotyped maybe, but not in public. it's only jokes though, there really isnt a hatred for them besides the baby boomers
theres lgbt marches and gay friendly clubs

also i swear to allah im not using anything to get these digits, i myself am scared
>>
>>73953179
putting it on the list of options then. sounds pretty nice.
don't care that much about jokes or marriage as long as i'm not flung off of a rooftop within the first week of living there.
