If you like Bob Dylan or just about any folk musician, traditional or contemporary, you have this guy and his father to thank. They went to the south and Alan went all around the world to record the folk musics of various ethnic groups, if they hadn't done so it's very likely our understanding of folk music would be radically different. This is the story of one of his journeys to the South, it's a good read.
