Great jazz musicians that are still alive and going at it edition
seeing Herbie live for the first time on Friday - cautiously optimistic
as for other old jazz musicians still performing (as far as I know):
- Sonny Rollins (86)
- Wayne Shorter (83)
- Chick Corea (76)
- Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra) (93)
- Lee Konitz (89)
- John McLaughlin (75)
- Pharoah Sanders (76)

I thought sanders was dead

He released 3 four-hour albums last year as well as a handful of bootlegs and is touring Europe all this year. I'm happy. When will the next release be?

in addition to Herbie, I'll be seeing The Bad Plus, Yussef Dayes from Yussef Kamaal, Ambrose Akinmusire, Shabaka & the Ancestors, Julian Lage and Bill Frisell (who is almost 70, though) this weekend
a lot more interesting younger jazz artists around than 75+ (yes, I know /mu/ in general doesn't listen to contemporary jazz or go to jazz gigs)
anyone remember herbieanon? where did he go? I hope he's fine.

>google Roy Hanes to see if he died yet
>he hasn't
92 AND GOING STRONG
I guess Wadada Leo Smith might be more popular and respected than ever at 75, Henry Threadgill also seems to have gotten a new surge in popularity in recent years

>3 four hour albums
I think I'd prefer one great 1 hour album.

AACM is one of the best things that have ever happened to jazz

Threadgill is at The Newport Jazzfest this year, gotta go get my tickets.

They were all pretty great. Very diverse and innovative releases too.

I mean, 12 hours of music in one year is a bit excessive tho... of you're a big Braxton fan and want a comprehensive idea of the sort of stuff he's been up to and thinking about, I'd say it's class but I'd be more appreciative of a bit of curation.

Understandable. Maybe that's what 2017 will have to offer us.

Bill Frisell is amazing

Don't forget Ahmad Jamal, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Heath and Lou Donaldson
My greatest regret was not be able to see Ornette Coleman live.
any good books about alto saxophone for total beginners?

You've got to just start with scales, arpeggios, and sight-reading and then start looking at a jazz theory text. Mark Levine's is good.
New Vijay Iyer and Tim Berne records coming out in the fall. It's been a good year for ECM.
What does /jazz/ think of Casiopea?

yeaaaaah Shabaka Hutchings is heavy, Sons of Kemet is criminally underrated.

As long as you listen lots, that's the most important thing.
