Besides writing songs in Lydian, how can I make my music sound melancholy and nostalgic?

why would lydian make things sound "melancholy and nostalgic"?

Lydian is more positive and quirky.

If you want melancholy and nostalgic, use good chord progressions and voice leading. Just using regular major and minor keys is all you need - you don't really need modes for that.

Beethoven did melancholy and nostalgic with pure diatonic. Study the chord progressions of his piano sonatas and see what he does.
