The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

The cassette to the OKNOTOK release contains 2 sides of huge Radiohead collages that compile all the loops, noise collages from Nigel, raw demos and some alternative takes of some of the tracks.

It sort of ends up being one of the best things produced by the band? I mean you go from Thom screaming into a microphone ala Masonna and segway into a solo piano version Motion Picture Soundtrack. It's fucking great for me. It's pretty surreal. It's like walking into the basement and finding old photos you don't remember from the moment you thought you remembered so well.

Fuck this OKNOTOK is an amazing collection of recordings.

Queens of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf
>dude sick riffs-core
Really not that much to say. Josh Homme is a great guitarist and delivers some sicc riffs XD.
But really most songs are pretty similar (which seems to be on purpose given the concept of the album) and only a few leave me really wanting more.

Ween - The Mollusk
>midi music, shitcore, pirate metal
I don't get the hype to be completely honest. It's fun or w/e but some of the songs on here fall flat for one reason or another (like the terrible MIDI parts).

A heavier listen compared to Gamble's more well-known album, Koch. Takes spacier synth choirs and puts it to dirty beats, a consistent dub techno package.

Jagatara and Revy are the Talking Heads of their respective countries, great times are imminent. And Sex Bomben Auf Engelland is probably my favorite album of the aughts, but it does take a bit to get your head around it - weird, drawn out borderline avant-prog post-rock influenced by modern classical, Tsarist military policies and mass media from England, among other things.

Sorry Ethy, I really haven't been nice with these ratings for this drone at all. I hit a better streak here tho

>Philip Glass Ensemble - Einstein On The Beach
>Minimalism, Opera

Bigger than my life. Spoken words that remind me of Laurie Anderson, lyrics that seem to represent a state of mind more than a story. He's no Reich, but he seems to specialize in digestible, palpable layers between performers, using very little overall movement in other contemporary pieces.

Would NOT recommend sitting through the whole thing. Break it apart across a week or more, or listen to Glassworks instead.

7/10

>Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
>Pop Rock

Suffers heavily from "only the single is memorable' syndrome. Some tracks bear the same old 70's rock chords and bring nothing new with irritating vocals from Lindsey Buckingham, plus corny electronic guitar solos. Other drift into grating country rock, coupled with back porch acoustic strums. In particular, the B-Side is the worst part of this album.

It still represents one point where dozens of modern indie bands would derive their material from, which is notable for a 1977 release. I simply find it a partial failure, for not really hooking me as a pop album. Besides Go Your Own Way, big surprise.

5/10

>Roxy Music - Avalon
>Nu Age Romantic Synthpop

"This album got me laid more times than I can count." - top review on rym

hahaha

It's got some pristine new age synths, and a high airy vocalist that I enjoy. A funky bass, the instantly recognizable guitar, and of course there's a saxophone tooting away behind the light drums. I guess I'm a sucker for 80's pop, but you could also say this album consists of "good cheese", versus outdated bad cheese.

7/10

>The Stooges - Fun House
>Garage Rock, Proto-Punk

Iggy Pop holds this together. Not sure how I feel about these early stages of punk, where rock melodies mix with rage and unorthodox sounds.

>Komeda Quintet - Astigmatic
>Post Bop

The A-Side balances on tightropes one moment, and slinks through abandoned constructs the next. Each player is paired with another and solos by themselves, all while creating very compelling and flexible lines. Very approachable for avant-garde jazz, more like a transition towards it.

Kattorna was composed for a movie soundtrack, with a very easy hook and slower pace compared to the wildness of the title track. Rune Carlsson's drumming flow makes it sound too easy, and Lenz's bass graciously blends with Komeda's gentle piano chords. Komeda himself is surprisingly modest as the composer for the group, The trumpet and alto yearn in unison for Svantetic, before we're set drifting off into a riled sea.

I don't know any of these players, but this is some great work. I could listen to this over and over again.

8/10

>Nikhil Banerjee - Afternoon Ragas
>Hindustani Classical

Banerjee plays a Sarod, yeee

I was able to appreciate this a bit more for Banerjee's willingness to grind more sounds out of the instrument. The accompanying percussion is very welcome; personally, I find it more helpful in making this performance meditative. Even better when it's used to evolve the piece over time.

Made me want to listen to Terry Riley's Persian Surgery Dervishes. An improvement from GS Sachdev, aside from the stupid fucking live coughs recorded with this

So this is my first time listening to this, after my first attempt 2 years ago (couldn't get past the first song -- sounded like the ramblings of a drunk man, it still does). I don't really know what to say about this album, except that I found that the best way to enjoy this album was to zone out and listen to the songs rather than actually pay attention. I really didn't care for the spoken word bits, but I did enjoy the rest of the album, especially moonlight on Vermont.

Jesus I LOOOVE gamelan-esque jazz. The bells and the chimes were quite literally perfect here, reminded me a lot of Pharoah Sanders actually. Only complaint is the fairly long flute (?) solo in the first track, which could have been omitted.

>Don Cherry - "mu" First Part
Why was so much of this played through only one ear? Definitely ruined what otherwise could have been a good album (it physically pains me when sound comes through only one ear, and it very much did this time too). Had it not done this, I still wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly at the level of Eternal Rhythm, felt a lot more dry comparatively. It was still decent though.

Bugskull was really good; Phantasies and Senseitions is like Animal Collective (in the folksier tracks) and James Ferraro grafted onto an indie rock artist.

Gonna try do "reviews" for these lol

Lou Reed - New York
It's obvious here that Reed really wanted to be a poet first and a songwriter second, the lyrics are really great here, but the delivery of these lyrics against the music is often sloppy or stilted, but I suppose that kind of delivery works here. Romeo had Juliet is a great first track. A number of the track here like There is no Time are really hammy and cockrocky. It's an ok album alround though.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Mature Themes
Not as good as Pom Pom, kinda above average, it is a six out of ten album with all that entails

Anti Climax - Raped Ass

pretty decent hardcore punk, although i don't understand why the guitars always sound the same and the drums always sound weak. are they all recording live and with like four shitty mics? i don't get it. the riffs were good though, and it was short enough for me to not ragequit feeling spoon-fed and draggy. if you like crusty hard punk check it out, i probably won't listen again though (but i'm sure live it'd be fucking sick)

Good-day /daily/, how are you guys doing? Tried the following recently;

>Big Star - #1 Record. I wouldn't call it power pop, to me it sounds more psychedelic and the album is very joyous throughout. Chilton's vocal melodies in places remind me of Walter Becker's weirdly enough, especially on Thirteen. Feel is undoubtedly my favourite song on the album and I feel it is a fairly front-loaded one, though I'm certainly looking forward to trying the rest of their material.
>Flying Saucer Attack - s/t. I find it so hard to believe that this was recorded with only two core members (plus Matt Elliot on the bongos and all), this is one of the rare cases where the shoegaze genre actually surprises me. The walls of sound are far more tense and distorted beyond anything My Bloody Valentine has done yet there are also tracks that border on post-rock with minimal use of guitars and greater emphasis on drumming. Great album.
>Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance. I was going in to this not really knowing what to expect, given its proximity to the Pop Group's "Y" on the post-punk flowchart I assumed it'd be similar though in reality it isn't as it actually has more than one good song. Jesus, this album is brilliant, the sparse use of synthesizers pattered throughout on top of harsher, punkier guitars. Love the constant build-up on Chinese Radiation and the sound effects utilized on Sentimental Journey - quite somber at first similar in regard to Joy Division's I Remember Nothing though one's the rhythms start swinging into action it becomes a distorted mess that blasts through one's speakers, love it, absolutely love it.

>>73884547
Sounds harsh anon, with so many new releases it is certainly a tricky situation.
>>
>The Melvins - A Walk With Love and Death. This is a double-album (the first CD being called "Love" and the second "Death" appropriately). Love takes the sludge metal vibe of previous material and churns out some memorable riffs though little more, personally as someone who finds the Melvins overrated as sin it is pretty good though ultimately nothing special. Death is essentially some experimental noise collage (think a 40 minute Revolution 9 though fundamentally boring and stagnant rather than bewildering), put both together and you get a 1 hr 20~ min album that is far too bloated and uninspired to get anywhere, easily the worst release this year that I have came across.

Also gonna try Aphrodite's Child - 666 later, should be fun! And also the new Porter Ricks album.

I see what you're getting at. Based on what I'd heard before I was essentially expecting Loaded with a fuckton of power chords, instead it sounds kinda like if Steely Dan cut out the jazz and went psychedelic. Still enjoyed it though, wouldn't say its anything in particular though Feel is a brilliant track.

>Neu! - Neu 75

Wonderful first half that more or less continues on the "Hallogallo" sound. This album is more straight forward and straight to the point than the first. The classic motoric beat and guitars that feel like theyre floating. Pretty and ethereal sounds that dont get as abrasive as earlier Neu! The second half is more energetic and agressive sounding. Motorik groovy fast paced tracks with angry slurred vocals-- an important step towards punk rock in music history.

>Ruins - Hyderomastgroningem

I went through a big Ruins phase a few years ago and even briefly played in a band that sounded just like them. Never heard this one though. For some reason Ruins most acknowledged work (probably because it was released on Tzadik) but far from their best. Its more or less classic Ruins sound but lacks the intensity and unrefinedness that made earlier Ruins so interesting. Prog stereotypes of jazz and classical influence, nerdy stuff like made up languages, and world building mythologies that Magma exempifies and exgerates become even more distorted through Ruins intense in your face, stripped down punk rock prog. Taking the operatic sound poetry esque vocals of Magma but combining them with screams, shrieks, growls, tongue rolls, examining the limits of human vocals in the tradition of artists like Meredith Monk. The big prog band stereotype of having 10 members and long drawn out songs is compressed in to a bass guitar- drum duo making usually short fast songs. They have impecable timing and interplay between their bass and drums and vocals. Keeping prog standards of high brow influences of art music and jazz, using complex time signatures and scales, embracing atonality but with the raw energy and pacing of a garage punk band. They set an important intersection of sound that helped create noise rock and math rock as we know them. Although this album feels middling within their discography and lacks the rawness and intensity of their earlier work.

aaaand THATS A WRAP
What an incredibly close final match up this turned out to be!

I don't usually like the edgy apocalyptic type music, so going into F#A#Infinity, I definitely wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. But honestly, the instrumental bits were so eerie and emotional, they reminded me a lot of Swans on STFB. Its definitely above solid, and I could see myself returning to it. Just cut the spoken word in the beginning, and we're good.

Coltrane was just awesome, every song on it was just a joy to listen to. I especially love the appearance of Dolphy on the first track, and the entirety of the last track was just great.

So congrats to borzoi on winning to tourney!! I'm gonna do a 25 album drone of only you, so if you have specific stuff you want me to hear, or just want me to pick from yr rym, lmk.

Fripp & Eno - (No Pussyfooting)
>wankertronics, ambient, enocore
Neat. The layered guitar parts get drowned out by Eno's fuckery a lot on "Swastika Girls." Besides that it's pretty good for two twenty minute guitar solos.
3.5+

Fripp & Eno - Evening Star
>wankertronics
A bit more sparse than '(No Pussyfooting),' this album has several melodic and short tracks followed by a twenty-eight minute droning one titled "An Index of Metals."
Not as innovative or interesting as their first collaboration but still some great ambient/wank/guitar/etc.
3.5- or 3.0+

Joanna Newsom - Ys
First off, her voice. It’s weird, a bit off kilter, her voice goes between different accents and she pronounces some words strangely.
Does this mean it’s bad? Not necessarily. It’s unique at the very least and her delivery of some lines can be great, others not so much.
Her harpism(?) is nice, and so are the backing strings. Jew’s Harp and some Banjo on some songs for whatever reason.
Her lyrics are interesting, she manages to fit rhymes in awkward, poetic verses.
"Emily" is a great song with the themes of her sister and astronomy.
"Only Skin" seems like a vague tribute to icons like Virginia Woolf with lines about being weighed down by her pockets and other things.
It is also by and far the most ambitious song on 'Ys' with male and female backing vocals in the final few bars, fluctuating time signature, some of the best harp parts on the record, and the dense, semi-autobiographical lyrics.
feeling a strong 4 on this album, could go up.

Codeine - Frigid Stars LP
>memecore
I really like the noisy approach to slowcore. The lethargic singing goes perfectly with the droning rhythm guitar and drums.
3.5-

I'm sure the majority here will agree with that

Invention for Radio No. 1: The Dreams barely has any actual music in it, it's all hidden behind the narration. I just happen to really like the narration topics in all the tracks. The static drones behind the voices are even more effective when they're moving in pitch with what's being described (down, down, down...) Very low-key, almost like Onkyo if it didn't have spoken word.

Don't even get me started on James. Everything about his character sucks. He wines, he's """"emotional""" - his storylines all suck and they just get worse as the show continues. And that song oh my Goooood it's so awful but he somehow plays it like 300 times to tell everyone how cool and emotional he is.

I started that show thinking James would be my favorite and Bobby would be my least favorite but my opinion completely flipped about three episodes in once I realized how much of a twat Bobby really is. Ugh

Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder (1964)
>hard bop

One of the best jazz albums I've heard in terms of melody. While not falling under the qualifications of cool jazz as a genre, this is by far one of the most effortlessly cool jazz albums I've ever heard. Has its issues, mainly because it never amounts to much more than an exceedingly pleasant record, but it does pleasant better than almost any album out there. Morgan himself is an absolute virtuoso, his trumpet lines here are some of the most memorable I've ever heard.

alright i wrote shit for all of these then i accidentally deleted them so get hype for 1/2 sentence reviews

The Dillards - Wheatstraw Suite (1968)
>progressive bluegrass

Baroque bluegrass somewhat in the style of late-era Byrds. The baroque pop elements tend to be overdone and rather hokey, but these guys play the hell out of their instruments and they fit snugly into that "cosmic american music" sound I love so much. They also do a kickass Beatles cover.

3.0-

Oren Ambarchi & Jim O'Rourke - Behold (2015)
>electroacoustic, drone

I now realize that Rod recced me a completely different Ambarchi/O'Rourke album, so I'll get on that one soon. This mainly consists of very low-frequency, rumbling drones. It's an organic approach to drone, but not a terribly engaging one. Both these guys have better work in the genre.

2.5

The Locust - Plague Soundscapes (2003)
>noisecore

Absolutely spastic, mile-a-minute noisecore with some piercing vocal and instrumental work. Luckily, that's all part of the appeal. I'd never call this one of the best noise/grindcore albums around, but it's definitely got it's moments, mainly lying in the use of electronics and the sheer haphazard, off-the-wall nature of it.

2.5+

Royal Headache - High (2015)
>power pop, garage rock

Solid enough booze-soaked power pop. Worth a listen if you're into this style (which I mostly am), but all this band does is really rehash what hundreds of other bands have done. The vocalist is awesome, but the instrumentals are very derivative. Just listen to Teenage Fanclub.

2.0+

Young Fathers - Tape One (2011)
>abstract hip hop, experimental hip hop, UK hip hop

I realized recently that sparse hip hop is not my thing. The very low-key, wonky drum beats on here fizzle out without making much of an impression, and none of the MCs are all that either. Points for creativity, and there is some admittedly great, more ambient-based production here, but it's not my thing.

Saw the Roots last night and they were absolutely magnificent. The show started with this lengthy Black Thought freestyle and then went into this crazy funk thing where the tuba player soloed for like three minutes. They played pretty much everything else imaginable throughout the concert - Damien Marley, Guns N Roses, Led Zeppelin, Bruno Mars and all their own big hits. They played a mini jazz suite, had a DnB DJ during the intermission and the bassist even took them into some thrash metal for a moment. It was incredible. Questlove was ridiculous but every musician on stage blew me away at one point or another honestly.

I'm not a big concert guy so maybe that's why it impacted me so much but I'd highly recommend seeing them if you have the chance.

It feels familiar, I don't know why, what comes to my mind are the post-modern parties by NAAFI, maybe it's that and the somewhat obscure and weird atmosphere I want to be playing after for the walk back. The first track should be longer.
