Ghost is literally Pink Floyd + early Sabbath/heavy psych like Iron Butterfly. That's a well-made album, it just doesn't sound like metal. It's heavy psych with some Sabbath doom vibes, if you wish, but it's no more metal than Cream.

Really this is a casual's understanding of "metal": heavy rock riffs and lyrics about Satan.
Ghost is part of a trendy "revival" of hard-rock/proto-metal, a bit like Sword and similar acts. But they also hop on other trends a lot, merging this thing with basically pure Pink Floyd vocals. In result it sounds like britpop which just happens to have Sabbath riffs in the background. Lush production gives it no points, it sounds more like your pop record.
This band is hated here a lot. Not only Ghost pose as metal, they merge it with genres quite opposite to it.
If you want real doom or early metal revival, just try Candlemass or, obviously, early Sabbath.

It's 2017 and I have just understood why Disembowelment's only full-length is awesome. Real transcendent stuff.

Probably. I haven't watched any videos of him playing. I only recced him because he's one of the few guitar wankmasters I can stand to listen to. As a guitarist myself, I probably should care more about techniques and rigs and whatnot, but I just don't. Interesting songwriting is all I'm looking for.

The more I listen to Japanese rock, the more I feel that they just get Western music wrong. They just don't understand what hooks are, and their melodies always go in weird directions. I love traditional Japanese music though.

This, basically. And that's a real bummer. You know, if I know anything at all about metal imagery, a fucking DEATH POPE should sound like the logical pinnacle of evil in metal. But when you turn it on, you immediately feel like you've been fooled.
To be fair, It's still well put-up album, better than most indie shit for sure. The vocals are good, the production is sleek. But if you seriously consider it metal, you're the most stinking nu-male trash in existence.

They are in the weird, kinda cheesy territory of mixing modern, thrash-like riffs, with retro hard-rock sound, and adding nu-male vocals on top of it. These things just don't mix well. This reminds me a lot of that shitty 'revival' wave of bands like Wolfmother.
I agree they are pretty good at this, at least you don't get a feeling it's trash from first seconds. But at the same time, there's just a layer of fakeness on top of it.
At the end of the day, I never find myself wanting to listen to a mix of different things like Sword. I want heavy blues riffs? I have blues gods like Clapton etc., who could write 1000x times better music, not to mention a shitload of smaller acts like Sir Lord Baltimore. I want early Sabbath goodness? It's been picked apart to smaller genres and amplified by thousands of bands, which were way more devoted and true than Sword. I want modern metal? I listen to modern metal.
The closest thing to convince me that this could work was Kyuss/QotSA. But they're also the only ones, fuck that stoner rock genre.
