Shout out to Rachel Goswell and Bilinda Butcher for the bands they're in.

Also, rankings aside, I like everyone in these list. Nobody is of a 'low' ranking.

fite me.
>>
roasties can't sing bro

>Hannah Diamond > Grimes
I've never seen a bigger trolling in my life. How the hell that terrible singer (not even musician) is better than Grimes? Also how Elizabeth Fraser who just sings is better than Grimes, who is a complete artist and producer?
>>
good list
>>
>>73874959
It just sounds way way better and cooler. Plus, Hannah is clearly WAY hotter.

thank you. I like a lot of other stuff too of course but wanted to do like my arty / dreamy girl list ranking.

obv I'm trolling the grimesfags with grimes at the bottom like that. I actually quite like her. but wouldn't compare her to many, many of these others.

It sounds like shitty PC Music. That gimmick genre has no future. Art Angels is pop music done right not that shallow crap which is not even catchy.

you MUST be joking.

>>73875036
>obv I'm trolling the grimesfags with grimes at the bottom like that.
So, you just admitted that you're trolling. Are you aware that right now your thread is against the rules?
>>
>>73875189
actually, it's very very sincere. as close to accurate of rankings of my take on their value as possible. I might as well rank Grimes that way in respect to the others if I'm trying to be honest. as far as listening habits I probably listen to her more than many others, if that makes you feel better.

by trolling I simply mean that I do in fact like Grimes, but you will just have to accept that one can be a fan and not rank her the highest. nothin' personal.
>>
what are the criteria for this list? It's pretty vague. As for fraser, making up her own nonsense language is a little autistic, anon. Take away that glorious guthrie guitar sound, and what your stuck listening to is the tape of only linda.

I fixed the rankings:

Grimes > Bjork > Kate Bush > Joni Mitchell > Delia Derbyshire > Laurie Anderson > Elizabeth Fraser > Stevie Nicks > Sky Ferreira > Zola Jesus > Siouxsie Sioux > Julia Holter > Joanna Newsom > Hope Sandoval > Alice Coltrane > Nite Jewel > Elysia Crampton > Maria Minerva > Grouper > Vashi Bunyan > Virna Lindt > Julee Cruise > Nico > Tina Weymouth > Laurie Spiegel > Julianna Barwick > Buffy St. Marie > Colleen > Pauline Oliveros > Inga Copeland > Puro Instinct > Geneva Jacuzzi > Diva Dompe > Linda Perhacs > Diamanda Galas > FKA Twigs > Laurel Halo > Holly Herndon > Pharmakon > Jenny Hval > Hannah Diamond > Yoko Ono

This is it.
>>
>>73875356
the criteria is art music girls and ethereal girls. if you're familiar with most of the artists you should see the connections.

but you're criticizing Liz so you have no wherewithal as far as art goes so nevermind.
>>
>>73875261
What would be her real position in your top? Right after Hannah Diamond like in the first version you posted in another thread?

BTW you missed Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance.

This really is the only way that Lauren Mayberry actually figures into any of this, tbqf.
>>
>>73877516
All of it is either art music or goes into dreamy / weird / atmospheric places. That should be pretty apparent to anyone familiar with them all.

>>73877439
She's not weird enough. Like I like Carole King too but she doesn't belong in this list, where Joni with her wyrder stuff and way of holding the notes in that stoney way clearly does.

Like, considered putting Karen Carpenter who is huge for me but her music is weird and atmospheric BECAUSE it is trying to be extremely normal.

Also juggled with Missy Elliott, another big one for me. Would definitely put he in a list of innovators and all-timers, and perhaps she belongs on here, but something I can't quite articulate kept her off this list. Probably due to the nature of her more normal stuff... operates in a consciousness that is too... I dunno, Lil Kim or something. Which is also very weird and super shiny and hyperreal stuff can figure in here but there's a kind of porn-consciousness that some of that rnb stuff comes from that I think is a different spiritual entity.

I considered Sade. she's a good choice, and I love her.

I love Nina but she didn't fit the character of this list. more of a soul thing. I love Billie Holiday too but again, doesn't fit here. it's not merely an all-time female list.

>>73878158
As I think I said earlier, once you get past the top row and half of the second, these get more interchangeable for me, and I understand how much any of these can attract or repulse people. Nico is definitely very polarizing.

>Stevie Nicks that high

Nah. I mean she's a good performer and she wrote a handful of pretty damn good songs, but that's about it. If she had the same accomplishments but was a dude she wouldn't be notable at all.

I love Liz Fraser but putting her that far beyond Joni doesn't make a ton of sense. In singing alone, maybe.

>worshiping Stevie
kek
>>
>>73878562
Steve Nicks is the meme, go-to choice for women who need a musical idol that isn't Britney. She's the equivalent of women who "in an ocean of Kardashians," want to "be a Marilyn," not realizing that Nicks was basically just Dolly Parton with a band, a notion that has been further obscured with the passing of a generation.
>>
>>73878851
sometimes idols are idols for good reason. not getting Stevie's greatness is a much shallower, meme position than understanding that whatever surrounding impressions you might have socially or culturally shouldn't matter as much as the impact of her work
>>
>>73878875
It's not that she isn't great, it's just that she's kind of the easy/convenient choice.

Everyone knows her or at least her songs, so you can talk about her at any juncture without confusing people. It's easier to tell people you're a Stevie Nicks fan than a Laurie Anderson fan.

Her best and most iconic songs are relatively straightforward but don't engage the brain in any meaningful way.

Might be one of the more well-rounded choices, but there's nothing worth worshiping, just admiring maybe.
>>
>>73879062
>it's just that she's kind of the easy/convenient choice.

Shouldn't even figure into it. Metatextual, constantly shifting bullshit. Either Nicks is brilliant or she isn't (she is with Fleetwood Mac, definitely).
>>
>>73880121
She isn't. :( With the Mac you've got to allow that she had an above-average guitarist interpreting her prose in song. She's one of the only ones in the thread that isn't doing double duty. Nicks only sings, she's not contributing to arrangements, production, or playing the instruments 95% of the time, even on her solo albums. Good at the one thing she does, but that's about it. The aura can't make up for the rest in my book.

I'm being forgiving too.

What the fuck is this garbage, this clearly is meant to troll people who hate Grimes since you just put a Grimes-like artist at the top over actual amazing ones like Siouxsie Sioux, Diamanda Galas, Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, Buffy St. Marie, Pauline Oliveros, etc.
>>
>>73880394
>The aura can't make up for the rest in my book.

Really? I feel aura and grain of voice and persona and all that is part of the genius / talent / it-factor with a lot of artists, a big part of what makes the music what it is. And she writes her songs, and has her own very distinct and influential style that is basically an archetype at this point that she defines better than anyone.

Getting into the nuts and bolts of arrangements and production don't matter to me. Women are social creatures, often work in reactive, enmeshed ways, and that's fine. I like the 'elemental', 'bodily' product that comes out of it.

And anyways, sometimes an artist knows what they are doing and want and then work collaboratively with a producer and arranger to bring it out. Even The Beatles had their George Martin. You don't have to do it all.

Liz can't possibly ever be "overrated".
>>
>>73880467
Yeah, I mean, the criteria for the thread wasn't well-defined. Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson are do-it-alls. Liz Frazer, Stevie Nicks, and Tina Weymouth are specialists. Bjork, Diamanda Galas, Joanna Newsom, and Yoko Ono are somewhere in between.

If I'm rating them on presence, Nicks wins. If it's overall vision/trailblazing ability, or just holistically on every factor, Joni. Creativity, probably Bjork. Vocal ability, Fraser.

Both Liz Fraser and Grimes are MUCH better than those artists you mentioned. And more distinctive too.
>>
>>73880506
Liz Fraser is not overrated at all. In fact she and her band Cocteau Twins are heavily underrated, especially these days. She's known by a select few; the masses are completely clueless about her and her band.
