Someone last night said Bill Evans was the mastermind behind this, that's a lie right
The thing about this album is that 90% is improvised... miles wrote most of the heads but they're all quite simple. Maybe what they meant is that Evans being the pianist was playing chords behind most of the solos and helped build a good foundation for them. Idk, because it's improv there's no one person responsible for the greatness of this record.

Bill Evans is exquisite in his playing but I was just perplexed when someone said he was the brains, improvisation with miles direction is what I heard as well. I know Winton Kelly substituted for the Free Loader track since it was more blues oriented. Question, were black American jazz artists classically trained? I feel like a lot of jazz does really explore chord progression or chord rooted melody or harmony

they were classically trained in so far as they often began playing in conventional brass bands. some of them like george russel became music students and he wrote the lydian concept treatise which influenced both davis and evans. evans' compositional influence on "blue in green" has been acknowledged much later.

Even though Miles technically gets writing credit for the tunes, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Bill Evans was actually the main creative force behind their composition.

Where did this idea come from now?
