Nah, TMR is enjoyable

damn...

I feel like there was not much actual math involved in the composition, just a lot of semi-random improvisations by Beefheart that happened to be in "mathy" time signatures when John French transcribed them. Math rock kinda implies the composer(s) know what they're doing in conventional music theory terms and are doing it intentionally

No other album this old managed to generate this much discussion in /mu/, except for The Beatles and TVU&N

But neither of them is as experimental as TMR

Pet Sounds

Fine, avant-garde then

Pet sounds generates less discussion than TMR in my opinion, at least on this board

after i went to a match rock show when i was like 17, the girls moms boyfriend said that captain beefheart was what he assumed that music sounds like but i corrected him, stating that Larks' Tongues in Aspic was a more accuratte point where math music began.

If you wanted to go early, groups like Les Blousons noirs had been doing mathy stuff before then but I consider Fripp to be the first musician to conciously go for the style.
