Arguably the first.

Nah. His music was actually intended to elicit emotion and be interpreted. Schoenberg is just completely bullshit anti-music.
>>
Good thing there's nothing wrong with destroying music.

Not just music, but the entirety of western civilization. (((Schoenberg))) was the soundtrack to the frankfurt school.

Why? Should've classical music never progressed from the baroque period? And jazz didn't automatically become free jazz for the rest of time after Ornette Coleman. Just some examples of very listenable free jazz:

putting music under uncompromising sovereignity of poetry and drama leads to destruction of music as higher synthetic organism.

If you actually read any of the stuff Schoenberg wrote you could see that he was trying to advance "German music" so that it would retain its lead over other cultures (his music would ensure it would be "100 years ahead of any other culture"), so according to himself, it's anything but anti-music. That it's a completely misguided attempt driven by some ridiculous nationalism is another matter. Russolo also justified his ideas as simply catering to the more intense, industrialized nature of the modern world, but I think it's closer to an attempt to destroy music as we know it than Schoenberg.

Schoenberg wanted to continue to write in the old style though. He urged his students to learn counterpoint and romantic harmony before going anywhere near 12 tone music.

Wagner started the whole shebang with the tristan chord, after which Richard Strauss was the guy who pushed music over the edge with Elektra (although he pulled back and never went that far out again).

Schoenberg was left to try to work out a system to work in that was outside of traditional tonality and he succeeded with his 12 tone system (and a bunch of other systems he came up with). Without Schoenberg we wouldn't have Webern or Berg.

Schoenberg was a reluctant revolutionary, but in no way did he ever attempt to destroy music. If you listen to his music you will find it full of gesture, emotion, color and life - just like any music. The only difference is he isn't writing inside the "rules".

I thought you /mu/ pop fags hated rules and music theory anyway, shouldn't you love Schoenberg because he did what he felt he had to do?

If you want something to blame for trying to destroy music, blame the popular music industry - shitting out disposable singles and albums for cash and promoting sex appeal rather than musical value.

He was renewing Germanic music culture. Not destroying it.
>>73859992
lol what
>>73860135
ok this is a b8 thread I'm done
>>
>>73863558
Because you created an argument based on what someone posted. No one said music should have stayed in the baroque period yet you assumed that was their argument.
>>
>>73861985
He certainly fucked it up by making it all political and all about virtue signalling.
>>
so called creative destruction in the name of (tactical) patriotism or idealism is still destruction. in the case of adorno who heavily promoted schönberg, it didnt even need to be renewal, because he believed that destruction alone could be liberating.
>muh liberation
it keeps happening

at least with wagner there was a plausible argument about fertile effect of his new principles/aesthetics and he had works that were occasionally beautiful.

>>73863631
>Because you created an argument based on what someone posted.
Uh, like I should have?
No one said music should have stayed in the baroque period yet you assumed that was their argument.
Doesn't that mean not progressing? And by that, Schoenberg and Webern would be considered the destroyers of music. In your opinion they most likely are and I would like to know why.
