Sly's albums are some of the most solid, and easiest to get into
>>73858346
George Clinton's Parliafunkadelicment thang is more out there, but not in a challenging way - more in a "what is this guy DOING" type way

James Brown's stuff is funk at it's toughest and most resilient. this funk will survive the Apocalypse.

The Meters (1969)
Feels about as basic as funk gets considering it's pretty early, but it's definitely tasty good

>James Brown's Funky People - Vol. 1

>James Brown's Funky People - Vol. 2
http://www.mediafire.com/file/95hstf3dmk6a8m2/JBFP2.zip
these are collections of James Brown's band and singers making music of their own. it's lighter than James Brown's own stuff, which might make it easier to get into before diving into his stuff - but they're all worth hearing
