Since Vaporwave began as a way of putting a postmodern spin on old hit songs, and since it was founded on the principle of independence, many have interpreted it as a critique of the music industry, and by extension, capitalism. It’s also important to note that because Vaporwave began on the internet, and it has no real association with any specific geographical locations, the genre has an intrinsic connection to globalism.

Many Vaporwave releases toy with the idea of a hyper-capitalist dystopia, or simply consumerism in general. James Ferraro was one of the first Vaporwave artists to integrate these concepts into his music. In an interview he gave with Spin Magazine he said, “There’s a number of ways that technology is to be used in actual, meaningful ways, but a lot of the time, the technology is used for commercial reasons or advertising. My whole point is that there’s a lot of duty in human technology and how we are able to use certain things, but the way it usually ends up being used is through ways that are less meaningful. It’s a double-edged sword, where our own technology, which is a really beautiful thing, is used against us.”

Ferraro’s most recent full-length album is a neoclassical fever dream called “Human Story 3.” This album almost completely forgoes the use of sampling in favor of fragmented and uncanny classical compositions played on MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) instruments. The majority of the samples used on this album are those taken from the robotic voice of a text-to-speech converter reciting various stream-of-consciousness words and phrases relating to commercialism such as, “Starbucks. Collapse. Ikea.” and “GPS. Prius. Global Market.”
