Guitar edition:
Who're your favourite old and new jazz guitarists?
On that note, shoutout to Pat, the last of the old or the first of the new?
http://www.freep.com/story/entertainment/music/2015/08/28/pat-metheny-detroit-jazz-festival/71337158/
Pat reckons old but like, srs? First recordings in mid 70s playing fusion puts him in the first of the new guys imo. It's an arbitrary ass line to draw, but I lump folks like Jaco, Pat, Meola, etc. into new school stuff. Stuff post the split between fusion and free. If anyone is the last of the old guys, it's someone like Dave Holland who came in right as fusion and free jazz were separating and musicians were starting to go down their respective streams.
Also, general discussion:
What've you been listening to lately?
What'd you think of it?
And remember kids, always engage the trolls. It keeps the thread bumped.

Oh, cool! I've been gone from these threads for a while. Hadn't seen this.
What does /jazz/ think about Eddie Lockjaw Davis?
old: miles davis
new: Trickster was a really good album, Sean Rickman is a phenomenal drummer
Been going through Max Roach's discog
Is Pat Metheny considered smooth jazz?
Has someone made a list of a particularly good album lead by each of the fellows in the famous "A Great Day in Harlem" picture? Or any chart that wasn't curated by RYM would be cool.
Alex Sipiagin's quintet at Smalls this weekend was incredible. You all should have been watching on their live stream.

No dingus
Opinions on either of these four highly lauded records from this decade? I already know nobody's a fan of Kamasi.
>>73835672
The Threadgill is definitely the best.
bump out the ass.

Pat is a great player in most 'real' jazz contexts, but sure, some of his Pat Metheny Group stuff is on the smoother end of fusion

>engage trolls to bump thread
great stratagey i like it. I havent been doing as much listening as I like recently though i have been listening to a lot of monk and trane (as always) and ive been asked to write a review for my friends new record. Theres this trane concert from 62 they released as Bye Bye Blackbird thats pretty awesome, just starting the transition into a freer sound, garrison and tyner take fantastic solos and elvin swing as hard as always.

I loove LockJaw, my favorite might be the Live at Mintons record with Johnny Griffin, the Woody n You is fantastic from that record.
>>73835672
yes, In for a Penny..., is one of my favorite records of the last 10 years. Threadgill is a genius, plain and simple. He is just so god damned unique and original. one of the most important guys since trane in my opinion and that record is kind of his modern masterpiece though he puts one out every 5 years or so that i think is just brilliant.
>>73835589
this is his best album. fight me
you guys should listen to this.

I guess maybe if you like the fusiony stuff more but I don't think the compositions are as good as on Destinations Unknown. Returning and Mirages are also nearly flawless and Prints, Equilibrium, and Steppin Zone are very good too.
When was the last time a jazz thread hit bump limit
Does anybody like that album Heavy Weather by Weather Report? I want to like Jaco's stuff but I just can't get into it
Wes is the best. I like Peter Bernstein and Kurt Rosenwinkel of the new school dudes

friendly reminder that there's no real problem with smooth jazz
