Van Halen [Warner Bros., 1978]

For some reason, Warner wants us to know that this is the biggest bar band in the San Fernando Valley. That means nothing--the term "bar band" becomes honorific when the music belongs in a bar. This music belongs on an aircraft carrier. C+

Van Halen II [Warner Bros., 1979]

Never let it be said formulas don't improve--in the wake of Kiss and Boston, this is heavy metal that's pure, fast, and clean with a minimum of myopthia and bombast and the guitar features are defined just as that. Eddie Van Halen's quicksilver whomp draws Hendrix comparisons, but he's no clone, being colder, faster, and and more structural. So how come formalists don't live the shit out of these guys? Not because they're into dominating women, that's for sure. B-

I clicked on this thread for this comment. I have this and Van Halen II on vinyl in a collection that includes Sufjan Stevens, Kate Bush, Bleachers, and The Body. I have a Van Halen t-shirt, and an ironic Van Halen lighter I used to carry around til it died.

As a Van Halen album its a 8/10 due to keyboards and "I'll wait" ...i kinda like Jump.

but some killer riffing by Edward on Drop Dead Legs, Girls Gone Bad, House of Pain etc..

The last good VH album until A Different Kind of Truth.
