Yeah. Younger folks may not realize this, but -
prior to the development of the recording studio - music producers didn't exist. It was just writers and performers. When the music studio came along it added two new roles: an engineer to manage the equipment, and a producer to manage the control booth - since a whole separate room for that was required until very recently.
