You have to be talented to be able to enjoy music? What? So you mean if i can juggle 5 puppies i'm allowed to listen to music? Wow, thanks! Nothing like the free west!

He's not pointing at us...

He can't sing for shit and all his songs sound the same. His songwriting style is hackneyed at best and rehashed for the mtv kids.

I mean it is why he killed himself
Elliot Smith is literal shit

You're a fucking moron. Learn something about music. You can dislike him all you want, but he had an insane sense of melody that consistently came effortlessly to almost everything he did, including his early work in other bands in his teens. He was also a master of chord shapes and complex chord changes.

Not op, but what do you mean by his melody? His voice or guitar?
Nah, he was talented. You're wrong.
Pitseleh is a great song. And so is Coast To Coast

He wrote some pretty great vocal melodies, but I had guitar in mind. He was super good at working the lead riff into the chords he was playing, or adapting the chord structures to fit the lead riff so he could play both at once. In songs like "Ballad of Big Nothing" there aren't any over dubs, he uses weird chord shapes for the C and G to accomodate the slides. He was insanely good at guitar. Here's an example that uses a real oddball tuning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBKAADRzqsc

Here is a song he wrote a fucking 16 years old. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuxO_XkJ158
The chord changes he does here are pretty unusual.

That's unironically great if he was only 16

nice bait

He was older in that performance, and the lyrics likely changed over time, but yeah he was 16 at it's first writing.
