Maybe on the first two records(the first of which was actually pretty fantastic and influential).
After that they quickly asserted themselves as one the best and most colorful pop bands of the 80s. Possibly the very best pop band of the 80s.

The Banshees are one of the signature bands of the post-punk era though, and were, at their commercial peak, almost as big as The Cure and The Sisters Of Mercy(who remain the definitive arena-goth bands, aside from maybe The Cult).

The cure are pleb tier mall goth pop music
But The Smiths are pitchfork drone critics darlings

Morrissey made better music on his own than either the Smiths or The Cure but Johnny Marr is one of my favorite guitar players of all time

For some reason they are way more depressing to listen to even though they aren't really straight gothy like the cure or hover goth like the smiths

and how are they not well known? They're probably the most well known Goth Rock band after the Cure. They're not sodding Klaus Mitffoch or something.
