Discuss the incredible artist Claire Boucher a.k.a. Grimes.

Watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgfyDlaacz4
Read this: http://www.thefader.com/2017/06/30/grimes-roli-soundpack-new-music-interview

>I'm in the zone of just throwing things at a wall. I'm trying to be unlimited by “this is sound of the album” or something. I'm trying to do the craziest shit I can, or just reach outside my comfort zone. I've been doing a song a day kind of thing. Like, get as far as I can on a song per day then start a new thing. Then once I have a various amount of things, then I'll go back and decide what to do with it.

Remember: be nice to Grimes!

Stop. That shitty fake Grimes thread will be deleted soon by mods. No hate allowed here.

Post your favorite 10 Grimes songs. It doesn't matter who obscure or known they are.
>>
>>73708433
That can't be good.

That's a hate thread with a shitty picture on top. I can't support that madness.

WTF? It's a legit thread, it's there. I don't think we should have to have it your way everytime. This isn't burger king.
>>
>>73708485
Did you just call a picture of her shitty?

You call yourself a grimes fan? How dare you.
>>
>>73708491
In fact that thread should be deleted right away. It's just a question of minutes.

>You will not post any of the following outside of /b/: Trolls, flames, racism, off-topic replies, uncalled for catchphrases, macro image replies, indecipherable text (example: "lol u tk him 2da bar|?"), anthropomorphic ("furry") or grotesque ("guro") images, post number GETs ("dubs"), or loli/shota pornography.

Rules are rules. That troll and flame thread is ready to go down to trash.
>>
>>73708509
I'm a Grimes fan, not a Grimes fanboy. There's a big difference. And anyway, that photo has been manipulated to look even worse. I've seen the original, it's not that bad.
>>
>>73708526
This. There is nothing against the rules i'm seeing there. I'm a fan of hers and that thread is quickly becoming amusing. And that's the point of this website, amusement.

Well it's probably a good thing you don't run this website then. Ignore that poster, it's easy. Just read that shit, and ignore it and move onto the next post.

Tell that to the mods. They will ban your ass in no time. Trolls and flames are banned. Rules are NOT negociable.

=== FRESH (old) GRIMES ===
>P&P: I heard you say that you used to be really unpopular in high school.
>G: [Laughs] Yeah.
>P&P: What were your typical weekends like back then?
>G: My typical weekend—it’s weird, but I had really fun weekends in high school. Probably too fun, but it was a good time and I had a lot of really good friends actually. It’s just that we were all unpopular in theory. It wasn’t like we were unpopular like we didn’t have friends, it was just that everyone hated us. But my high school was really polarized. Like I was a goth, and all my friends were goths or punks, and my step brother, who was my mortal enemy at the time, was a jock. There was always this rivalry between the goths and the jocks and it was just intensified by that, because we both blamed each other’s parent for breaking up our parents’ marriage, so it was extreme bullying. I would leave during class and put lube all over their lockers and the next day you’d get a basketball thrown at your head or stuffed in the locker or thrown in the pool or something. Or like framed for throwing a snowball. I was constantly in the office being accused of crimes I didn’t commit. It was just constant abuse.
>P&P: Yeah it sounds like a movie.
>G: It was also really fun. I look fondly back at that time.

>I've read/watched very nearly every Grimes video/radio/print interview in existence. To my knowledge the only time she has ever actually been on something during an interview was that one time back in 2012 or so when she had to "get rid" of her Clonazepam supply at the U.S./Canadian border.

ETA: Just checked, and even then it wasn't a case of her being on drugs for the interview in question - just one of the topics being discussed having come out of something she did while high.
https://www.tinymixtapes.com/features/grimes

Grimes very clearly doesn't need the help of drugs to appear weird/awkward in interviews. Imo based on all I've read/seen/heard of her, she'd probably come across as more "normal"/cause fewer pr problems* for herself if she DID do drugs before interviews/press junkets/etc.

* Although imo having to deal with protracted pr problems is much better than having to deal with protracted drug problems.

If you want the common pleb shit then go listen to the newer music from Art Angels and Visions.

The old shit is where all the quirky goodness is but you have to give it a chance to really get into it. That is, the stuff on Geidi Primes and Halfaxa.

There was a few old threads where unreleased libraries were available for download which i'd recommend too.

Depends on which direction you want to go. IMO her newer stuff was more accessible to the general public whereas her old stuff was more unique and eclectic.

Lyrically the old stuff is almost unintelligible in many instances (she's admitted this) while the newer stuff has many available lyrics.

I don't look too deeply into the music trying to find anything deep as most of her songs are personal to her and to be honest I don't think we'd understand anyway as she draws on the experiences from her life like snapshots in time and references only she and/or her friends would get.
>>
>>73710570
Gee that's encouraging. Maybe try recommending something instead of being an elitist? Christ, you people wonder why other anons have such a hard time getting into this shit.

This chart is my best general advice for how to most effectively see if her music is something you like. They key thing is to pinpoint the specific album/song that appeals most to your already existing musical taste and then exploring the rest of her discography outward from there.
It's just a peculiarity of her artistic output.
>>
>>73710670
I did. That's my opinion. IT IS pleb shit (read between the lines don't be so spoiled) in that it's made mostly with a flare for common folks who just want something to groove to.

Again, MY opinion. You don't have to agree. Don't get so triggered. Breathe. You can still think whatever you want. It's okay.
>>
>>73710647
Anon, that's just a shitposter. Ignore him.

If you dislike her poppier stuff (the first page-ish of tracks that show up on a youtube search) try her first 2 albums. They're weird and actually quite challenging. They're growers so don't give up too quickly. Good luck.
>>
>>73710670
Chill out.
>>
>>73710673
Because if you don't love yourself i'd argue you don't know how to love and perhaps do not know what love IS. So why then would you suggest you're in love with her?
>>
>>73710703
Of course it's your opinion. But if you call yourself a fan don't shit on her dearly work. Visions and AA are her favorite albums and the ones who got the biggest acclaim.
>>
>>73710708
No. I'm engaging in discussion. He wrote his post, put some effort into it and said he was serious, i'm taking it at face value.

If you don't want to bother, don't bother. I will, because I want other anons to feel welcome in these threads not that we're a bunch of elitist pricks talking about how our love of her music is superior. Shit gets old fast.

Visions album is an entry level stuff to get into her. Also see this flowchart.

>What is the appeal of her songwriting?
Ethereal vocals, complex and layered instrumentals. Each song is different from any other one.
>>
>>73710589
I understand her thing is more dreamy poppy soundscapes than fantastic melody and structure. She seems like a "mood" artist to me. She doesn't really mesh with much of my personal taste but I have a few friends IRL and a whole board that I frequent that seem to swear to her greatness. Maybe if you could recommend some of her more experimental or more melodic stuff? I feel like everything I have heard so far to my ears is a muddy "in between" of those two.
>>73710610
Thanks for the recs, I probably wont listen to all of it today but I may be back in a future grimes thread to post about what you said if I'm successfully converted
>>
>>73710743
I am not shitting on her work. I am using nomenclature common to these boards. Pleb shit = Common people music. That is not an insult, that is an observation.

I could have just said normie, or common or whatever. But that's boring. Again, don't be so triggered.

I can be a fan and talk about her music any way I please.
>>
>>73710749
"don't bother" is not exactly a friendly post. Stop policing people here, anon.

Okay anyway. Let's move on.

I'm the poster you originally replied to. How is anything in my post indicative of me not wanting to bother, if anything I am "bothering" more than the average anon because I haven't been a huge fan of what I've heard and I want to understand and enjoy. Other anons in this thread have been incredibly friendly and helpful, and I can't help but think your the kind of poster that perpetuates the "grimesfag" stereotype across this board. Why are this way?

Actually it's both. She has both atmosphere and great melodies and structures. That's why her music has such an impact on some people.

I'm going to copy-paste an older post with a mixtape with her more experimental stuff from her first 2 albums + rarities:

Claire Boucher - Behavior
Angel
Beast Infection
Caladan
Devon
Dream Fortress
Favriel
Fifteen Minutes To
Gambang
Gloam
Grisgris
Intor Flowers
My Sister Says the Saddest Things
Omega
Orphia
Rasik
Rosa
Sagrad пpeкpacный
Urban Twilight
Venus in Fleurs
Weregild

I uploaded these songs for you - http://www85.zippyshare.com/v/vNCyCesU/file.html
There are many songs here but the duration of the whole "mixtape" is about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Tell me if you want a melodic mixtape.

No worries. I'm trying to stop this bullshit that continues in these threads. There is a good mix of people in these threads who are genuinely interested in her music, myself included.

However, there are a good number of elitists, and some obsessives who are easily triggered and it just seems to devolve into shit over and over again. I've seen so many people in these threads (new to them) get scared off because of all this shit.

It just bothers me that so many people will never experience her work because they were thrown off by the elitist commentary and unwelcoming attitudes of these threads.

I hope you'll continue to give her a chance. As with these threads. I hope you enjoy your stay.

Ive listened to various live performances and ive seen a interview or two. been lurking for a while now but her music is just so weird.
I get that she could be considered a musical genius since she composes these on the spot en her voice is quite angelic. Shes pretty cute in some vids and pretty weird as fuck in other.

Im just not too sure how to feel about her music atm i feel like im listening to art on one hand and to some mentally ill druggie mumbling in a mic on the other

That's a pretty fair and similar assessment to the way I felt when I first got into her music. A lot of great stuff, but a lot of weird shit too. Over time the weird slant starts to fade and the good of her work comes through.

OK anon, the melodic Grimes mixtape is here: http://www40.zippyshare.com/v/anXbFvj8/file.html

It's longer than the previous mixtape, but it should be very enjoyable. At least theoretically. I personally enjoy every single song from this playlist. Don't mind the 2 "duplicate" songs - they're significantly different.

Artangels
Ave Maria
Be a Body
Be a Body (2016 Live Version)
Butterfly
Circumambient
Crystal Ball
David
Flesh Without Blood
Genesis
Go
Kill V. Maim
Nightmusic
Oblivion
Pin
REALiTi
REALiTi (Demo Version)
Skin
Symphonia IX (My Wait Is U)
Vanessa
Venus Fly
Vowels = Space and Time
World Princess Part II

Have fun!

>i feel like im listening to art on one hand and to some mentally ill druggie mumbling in a mic on the other
She suffered for her art.

"Visions was an extremely cathartic album to make. I went through a period a few years back when I was really addicted to drugs. Two of my best friends died, I had this really fucked-up assault experience and I was constantly in and out of terrible relationships. I never really dealt with all that, but I eventually realised that by making songs I could work through these things that had been plaguing me for years."

As a result, Claire reckons there is a "weird jubilance" to Visions. "It can totally be a party album if you want, which is hilarious to me because it's so tortured. But because it's about sloughing off that pain, there is a kind of joy in the way it takes you from utter depression to utter ecstasy."

She concedes that this narrative might be difficult to glean from her lyrics, which are generally elusive and impressionistic, shying away from specifics. "I feel Visions could go a lot further emotionally. It worked for me at the time but now it does seem like I was hiding. I definitely want the next record to be a lot more direct."

Glad to help. If you will like at least 5 songs you're on the right path. Some of this stuff is ridiculously catchy and some other stuff is almost offputting. Anyway, it's intriguing.
>>
>>73710757
>She seems like a "mood" artist to me.
Textural, actually. The artistry in her music is more focused on how different musical elements relate to each other at any given point in time rather than how they relate in a linear fashion (terms like "melody" and "structure" in music are almost always understood to be describing linear concepts.) Some styles of music are better suited to delivering sonic texture (e.g. most synth-based music genres like new wave, classical orchestral, and choral singing) whereas others are better at delivering linear concepts (e.g. most forms of pop music, rock music, and progressive rock in particular.)

Whichever type of music most floats your boat is entirely up to taste, although texture and linearity really aren't exclusive traits in music. Every piece/composer is going to subconsciously favor one over the other, but imo all truly great music does at least a passing job of appealing to sensibilities for both.

>>73711619
for genuinely interesting pop see

melody and structure are always linear though, as they describe forward motion within musical framework, texture refers to instrumentation, dynamics, harmony, and mixing. They're not exclusive at all, you're right about that.

For me it took around 12 days of near-continuous listening to her entire discography before I was able to even get a basic sense of what I was listening to, and around another week after that before I was able to decide whether I loved it profusely or outright hated it.

1.5 years later, and she stands as my favorite contemporary musical artist bar none.

>it's a very specific segment of the fanbase
It's called Fandumb:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FanDumb
>The key characteristics of a Fan Dumb tend to be someone with an overdeveloped sense of entitlement and/or victimization and (usually) an underdeveloped sense of humor or perspective about the subject of their fandom, coupled with an obsessive level of an interest and (frequently) some rather irrational views on the whole thing, and finally mixed with that inability to distinguish fact from opinion and/or disagreement from hatred that so many people on the internet seem to be suffering from these days (despite these lessons typically being instilled in kindergarden). They usually believe that the very fact that they are a fan of something somehow either entitles them to special or exclusive treatment or that they are being persecuted by numerous different parties (the creator, the producers, other fans, the world at large, etc.) because of their fandom.

Every fanbase has it, and it is most obvious in the case of fanbases for artists bridging the gap between indie and mainstream appeal because of the Law of Fan Jackassery:

Grimes, a singer, songwriter, artist, sound engineer, and possibly a different species than human, is a person and a genre of her own. Listen to any of her songs, and you’ll soon understand what I’m talking about. Her music style can be described as electro-pop, with her vocals ethereally shining through. Even Grimes’ style, a combination of streetwear and modern goth, is uniquely and boldly her own, and it’s highly doubtful that you’ll find another person remotely like her on Earth.

STOP responding to low-lying b8. It's not topical to the thread. Report and move on.

I'm listening to Grimes for the first time and why does she sing so low? It seems like her voice would be the thing that makes her music stand out but it's always drowned under layers of vocals. Also the beats are so simple that I could borrow my friends Casio keyboard, download a couple of VSTs and reproduce the exact same sound. I think she has a pretty voice though.

>I'm listening to Grimes for the first time and why does she sing so low?
Her sonic reference point for vocals in her early albums was classical choral/orchestral music (where the human voice is routinely treated as just another instrument) rather than straightforward pop music (where the voice is always more important than anything else.)

her albums are diverse and versatile, nobody needs some anon to rearrange them

Hmm... tough one. Can't say country comes to mind when someone mentions Grimes, but imo if you're an old school country fan (no electronic instruments) you might find her first album Geidi Primes intriguing. If you're more of a contemporary (pop) country fan you could try her most recent Art Angels - although no guarantees on whether you'll anything truly country-esque there (desu I'm not much of a country fan myself, so my sense of taste for that is limited.)

A couple other things you might find interesting - this unnoficial EP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2_hBNQqEus from her pre-Grimes days.
Also, although not technically a part of her discography, both of these freak-folk albums feature a pre-Grimes Claire Boucher on backup vocals:

God really why you Grimes fanbase are so cancerous? We have this thread daily and you are just licking her asshole.

What's wrong about that? We want a place where we can discuss our favorite artist any time and any day.

>>
>>73734290
You are the ones spaming about Grimes daily, heck we might even get more than one thread daily on her. It's tedius, we can't have a thread talking about any girl artist without a Grimes fan comes and mentions her. I hate you always turn a Bjork or a Joni Mitchell thread into a Grimes spam-base
>>

I have two albums of her, Visions and Art Angels, they are good, not excelent but good imo.
>>73734379
Because there are a lot of people who aren't like you, people that always apears in any random girl artist thread and mentions how Grimes is such a good artist, that she is so talented and /mu/ is sick of that

i can't tell which of the grimesfags are trolls trying to make grimesfags look retarded or actual fans. those who are actual fans are undoubtedly fans of grimes and not of her music.

Are you aware that /mu/ has a significant Grimes shitbase problem?
>>
>>73734493
im aware of the troll problem on /mu/
>>
>>73734416
>Because there are a lot of people who aren't like you,
Pretty sure it's actually just 2-3 people - much like how most of the trolling against Grimes is just 2-3 people. Imo the whole thing is most likely actually the SAME 2-3 people just alternating viewpoints depending on the thread in question - since the only thing that trolls' truly care about is getting the most (You)s.
I'm sure the vast majority of people ITT are perfectly reasonable - much like how the vast majority of people in the rest of /mu are perfectly reasonable. It just seems otherwise because trolls are very good at "getting around"...

Going round-robin through threads and posting whatever they think is most likely to trigger the people posting in THAT particular thread.

For example, if you start paying close attention to all active threads devoted to similar topics - say, discussion of specific female artists - you will start to see a pattern where any time shitposting suddenly starts to appear in one, strikingly similar shitposting "magically" starts to appear in all the others - one after the other. And continues to appear in roughly that same order up until it all abruptly stops (because the singular user's behavior has finally drawn janitor/mod attention.)

Trolls/shitposters are experts at sucking up the equivalent discussion/emotional space of multiple normal posters with their shit - it's why they are so cancerous to discussion boards in the first place. It's not unusual at all for ONE troll to come across as 10+ posters to a non-troll trying to mind their own business.
