Queens of the stone age are trying to reach the same level of mainstream as the Arctic Monkeys reached with AM FM. Josh Homme got jealous of Alex Turner after he mentored him and then they shot up to mainstream pop. He is trying to chase that. This album will be along the lines of AM FM -- poppy and shallow. Forget about Like Clockwork. Those days are long gone. Josh Homme doesn't care as much about the artistic merits of what he does as much as he should.

qotsa is basically as popular as arctic monkeys but with adults instead of teenagers. I doubt he really cares about reaching that audience, but obviously this album will be more upbeat. I don't think a funkier sound necessarily means being more shallow

I mean ronson producing is pretty damning, but I'm sure there are a lot of shitty pop producers out there who aren't actually that clueless

I think the same. Homme has never been secretive about his love of dancy, lighthearted music. On top of that, he has also shown that whatever he does, he knows how to do it well.
...Like Clockwork is my favourite QOTSA album, yet I'm pumped for Villains!
