I love it. I have a feeling Animal Collective is on the way out though, at least on 4chan. They've been memed for too long. Doesn't seem like anyone cares about their releases anymore desu.

My favorite solo release AnCo related, though Sleep Cycle and Person Pitch are both really close.
Just wish Geo would give us a GOAT tier album as well.
Really enjoying the recent AnCo output, Painting With and the last two new EPs this year were great.
Glad they are trying new things but still holding onto what makes them fundamentally "them".

This and the new Cornelius will be my summer jams.

Avey, what the fuck, this is all we wanted from a new AnCo project. strip down and play with textures again.
>>
>>73638478
Does it matter where it comes from though?

Here it is, as good as one might hope.

Also, it's not right to expect or want something from artists, except quality. Don't constrain them.
>>
>>73638478
painting with has some crazy unique synth textures though

oh man i just typed out a good response and then i hit something on my keyboard that backed me out and erased it before i coukd send it. but yes i know, i just have been appreciating the solo acts more than the group project lately.

Look up a few interviews about Painting With, will change your mind.
The TLDR is basically "We use reverb maybe a little too much and write long stretching songs. We won't stop doing that but since we've been busy with our solo projects we decided to do something different on the last album, make a pop album that has shorter songs and has less production time".

It was them getting back together for a fun album, they've said they are going to focus on the next release more though than their individual solo works.

i totally get that, and I remember seeing Geologist playing with the OP-1 synth by teenage engineering and I really can't blame them for just playing with the potential of just that. I love playing with some of their cheaper products. No doubt I was listening to PW on repeat when it was released, but you are kidding yourself if you think it's on par with MPP or SJ.
>>
>>73639071
Where did they say they were gonna focus on the next release more than their solo?
>>
>>73639236
not that guy but id put a third of the songs on pw as among their best

floridada vertical lying in the grass, golden gal...
>>
>>73639236
>band who hasn't made something in a while comes together to make an album within a few months and decide to make it fun and short
>it's not as good as their masterpieces
Of course not.
Instead we got the last few solo albums which have been great, Meeting of the waters is also good and we got the Painters EP.
They haven't dipped in quality, they've been just doing their own thing the past few years.

I would consider Painting with a mid-tier AnCo album which is High tier for me.

>>73639283
Will try to find interviews to support my claims.

>>73639283
Vertical and Burglars are fantastic tracks. It might not be as bombastic as earlier works but it's practically a whole album of jams and it approaches cubism really interestingly.

Going to post some excerpts.

How is Painting With different from past albums?
The songs on average are a lot shorter and punchier, and the reverb has been more or less taken away except for choice moments. The vocal effects have been traded in for more personal vocal arrangements. These are key differences. I think people are criticizing it a lot for missing the magic or themes that are in some of our older records. In terms of the magic and our enthusiasm, I can assure everyone that it’s still there, though I understand the music that is presented is a bit different. At this point in our lives though, we are pretty different people from the guys who made Feels ten years ago. I can’t imagine why anyone would expect us to keep playing with the same themes and sounds. As a musician or artist, that seems so boring to me. I can understand the appeal of more “dreamy” washy-sounding records but it almost seems like that is every band’s go-to sound these days. A lot of records that we like from the ’60s and ’70s don’t have that quality and so I think that’s a reason we wanted to experiment with this sound.

But the heart of Painting With comes from Portner’s look at his own family roots, on “Bagels in Kiev.”

“My grandfather Louis and his parents left a small village outside of Kiev in the Ukraine and came to America in 1910,” Portner said. “They came from a family of bakers and set up a bakery in New Jersey. My grandfather invented the bagel press, which shapes the bagel in a mechanical, practical way. But he needed what little money he could get for it and sold it for very cheap to a larger company, which then spread the bagel nationwide. He also invented a device that makes the grooves in the tops of Kaiser rolls. My dad has all the diagrams and blueprints for these devices.”

Can't find the single line where one of them says "It will be good to focus on AnCo for now" or something like that.

>>73639071
Source? If that's the case then I will be really excited for the next release.

Not that Painting With was totally bad, but honestly it just felt like they didn't fully commit to it. A few of the tracks just felt thrown together and filler-tier
>>
>>73639640
i googled mixed bag? not that exciting man

the live part is true. they have really meshed well together over the past year, have seen them twice and both shows were very good.

>>
>>73639743
it's good though give it a shot
>>
>>73639645
i really think it was just forced, one way or another. clearly everyone involved is highly creative and talented. I don't think anyone could argue they don't have a insanely diverse catalogue. Since CHz they seem to be using the AnCo project as a cash cow. And like I said before, the live shows aren't lacking at all, so I don't really know what I'm complaining about. I guess I just expected them to keep changing it up.
>>
>>73639749
bout too, i liked man of oil but i tire of soundscapes
>>
I see pw as their my father... just a warm up because it's practically a comeback album
>>
>>73639762
I'm not sure I would take it as far as using it as a cash cow. Obviously I don't know them personally, but they don't really seem like those types of people nor do they seem like they really need the money

However I would definitely agree in a way, more so that they just haven't fully put their heart into the actual band lately. As they've said, they have been into solo work and family stuff.. I think they've also said they wouldn't have made a record if they weren't fully into it, but as someone who has extensively listened to their entire discography, there's no way I'm buying that. A lot of the record feels sloppy and thrown together but that's just my opinion

>>
>>73640358
I would agree with that. I used to be able to stay interested on here fairly easily, but lately when I tried coming back I've found myself having to try pretty hard to find a good thread. at least one that's active enough anyway
>>
>>73640441
would it? I'm not sure how an album like this could fall into that category
>>
This album is amazing. A totally unique entry in the greater AnCo discography and a great new direction for Avey. For the first time ever, Avey doesn't sound wild. And while his incredible energy is usually his best asset, this subdued Avey taps into a new kind of soulfulness. The songcraft is superb and his voice shines. It's beautiful. A+
>>
>>73640538
yeah, maybe we're using different definitions for "modern culture". idk, I think there's an argument to be made that it's part of the same.
