This is the worst album to start with.
Even worse than telling someone to start with The Body Lovers / The Body Haters.

The Great Annihilator. Shorter songs, but you can get the gist of what Swans is about.

No it's not. Children of God is a great middle ground in the Swans catalog. It's got the heavy Swans sound without being relentlessly crushing, and the album flows much better than some of the other albums, which sometimes feel like a compilation of ideas Michael Gira was playing with at the time.

It's certainly not their best album, but it's a solid starting point.
