I always assumed he used session musicians because his albums tend to have a lot of people credited on them, but I'm looking over them now and they're almost always for engineering, production, mixing etc. Pretty neat desu, I respect him more now.

The only instrument he didn't know how to play was the drums and that was back during the Pretty Hate Machine sessions. He taught himself in the years between PHM and Broken. Not a dedicated drummer skill, but enough so that he was never caught off guard again. kind of like his guitar work. Jack-of-all trades, with exception to synth and piano work.
