Bass is easier to learn to play at a "eh, can do", but it's a harder instrument to master in no small part because of how it has to interact with other instruments, which means that even virtuoso-style bass has to fit the band. Those that can, however, tend to have a more distinct style to the whole sound of the bass.

Drummers just get the worst side of the deal no matter how you cut it, though.

Oh I'll definitely never deny that drums is difficult. Once you get pass the technical aspect of how the drums work in a band, then you have to understand the physical ability needed in order to properly play and keep up. But the people here saying bass is the easiest (or in some cases I've heard growing up) the weakest element of a band are batshit insane.

To me bass and drums are probably one of the most important elements in a band. But that's probably because I grew up listening to jazz, funk, and neo-soul where those instruments shine the most.

Agreed. You can totally get away with quarter notes on the roots and elementary shit like that and let everyone else carry you. Like a lot of posts ITT mention: nobody (normal people) REALLY listens for what the bass is doing. A great bassist will naturally make the band better, but a shit one can hide in the background and get by.

Bass and Drums have the lowest skill floor, i.e. one can just pick it up and do bare minimum shit and get away with it. It won't be good, but itll be more passable in pop than a guitarist who's been playing for a day. None of these instruments are "easier" than each other, though. Just lower skill floors.

The other reason is that Bass is just plain sexy. It radiates a certain power and style that doesn't really come from any other instruments.
