Talk nicely about the innovative, brilliant, amazing, quirky artist named Grimes. What do you expect from her next album?

Reminder that your life is poorer if you didn't see this video yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmYgJhrvv84
And this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSWwVYuqsVM
About 1 year since her Glastonbury show: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4k3593

Enough to be called an album. AA was also a bunch of diverse songs. e.g. Does Scream really sounds like the other AA songs?

Because a bunch of songs put together by an artist is an album. Even if it would be a compilation, that's still an album.

How can you be so sure I didn't? J/k

>it fits overall atmposhere of the AA
Not really. It's the only song on AA that seems out of place. I enjoy it, though.

Grimes, the project of Montreal-based singer-songwriter Claire Boucher, coined a surreal form of dance-pop on the cassette 'Geidi Primes'. Highlights are "Feyd Rautha Dark Heart", in which her soft mantra cycles around a tribal hypnotic polyrhtyhm, and the syncopated clockwork of "Vanessa", which also offers the most spectacular demo of her sensual/childish super-ethereal falsetto.

After repeating herself with less magic on 'Halfaxa', Boucher shifted gear: 'Visions' veered dangerously towards synth-pop of the 1980s, the fad of the moment: the tinkling and jumping "Genesis", the sensual and subliminal "Nightmusic", the Chinese-opera inspired "Oblivion", the syncopated ballet "Vowels = Space and Time".

Overlooking your "shitty pop music" comment for a moment, Really? From http://imgur.com/gallery/S9esf/

>FM: There seems to be a clear development from your debut album through to Visions, but how do you think you have developed in that time?
>G: "I think I'm definitely learning about songwriting. With Halfaxa and Visions I would create songs almost by accident. When I started, I literally knew nothing about music. I didn't know what a chorus was or that a verse leads into a chorus and then a second verse. My understanding was more impressionistic. It was like, yeah I'm making music but I don't really understand how it works. But by the time I got to Visions I understood that songwriting and sound design are two different things; you can spend equal time on both and the level of sound design can make a better song."

Here's the key quote:
>G: "After this album, I'm actually thinking about going back and making more formless things."

Personally I'm stoked.

I just watched the symphonia live video from the op and boy is it awful. Grimes kinda sucks, the only reason you guys like her is because she's pretty. I mean really the video is literally her pressing play on a beat, playing some really basic keyboard stuff, and singing in a mediocre fashion.

>>
>>73634174

not him but all she does is
1. play a beat
2. play some keyboard
3. sings gratingly over the top
4. looks stupid while dancing
I guess I could excuse that if the song was at least interesting, but nothing entertaining is going on.
>>
>>73634174
Because the performance sucks! There's no passion, it's just some dumb synth pop song. I can tell she's trying to go for some "ambient" vibe but it just doesn't happen. The keyboard playing is pathetic and her singing is just not that great. Compare that to this performance:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_ul7X5js1vE
No laser light bullshit, no stupid dancing, just pure MUSIC. The band grooves insanely hard, you can tell how strong this is by watching the musicians. They're not doing some crowd pleaser bullshit, they're felling the music in their souls. Compare to grimes pressing play, plinking around on the keyboard (listen to the keyboard line in the superstition performance!), and singing in a mediocre fashion. Grimes is most definitely a talentless hack, but since she's attractive you guys idolize her likes she's some Kpop star
>>

She's making pop music, it shouldn't be hard to appeal to a wide audience lol. Can you really say that the symphonia video is not a display of hackery? She can't sing or play piano well, there's no soul, no emotion, no groove, just fake as shitty dancing. Look at guys in he brass section in the superstition video I posted, they're DRIPPING with funk, compare to Grimes' shit dancing. I find it hard to believe that you grimes fans actually enjoy this video based on the music and not grimes flipping her hair and dancing. You guys idolize her because she tries to be "different" and kooky, but she's a fledgling pop star like any other, and her music is mediocre.

I'm not even a particular fan of that recording (this is one that first made me start paying attention to Grimes in the first place https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGSwtEHE1dE ) But why does you not liking that particular performance supposed to mean she's a "talentless hack"?
>>
>>73634752
I rewarded the video. Grimes isn't a talentless hack, she has some production skill. The beat is actually pretty good. The problem is the the performance BREAKS DOWN when you realize she cannot sing or play keyboard to save her life, and symphonia as a song separate from the performance is just boring and repetitive.

Yes, because Grimes attempting to pass herself off in it as a 70s funk band with Stevie Wonder on vocals/piano. You're comparing apples to oranges,

>I find it hard to believe that you grimes fans actually enjoy this video based on the music and not grimes flipping her hair and dancing.
Dude, don't be a moron. Just in case you don't know, there's a studio version too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsbiyvpel54 No gimmicks, no image, no dancing, just pure sounds. And believe it or not, lots of people enjoy this song.

I suggest you to stop shitting your pants and actually try to get into synthpop. Learn to appreciate the synths and the beats and ONLY AFTER THAT listen and judge her music. Don't be a triggered embarrassing pleb who dislikes anything he can't understand.

Listen to a healthy dose of Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, OMD, Crystal Castles, The Knife and Depeche Mode and try Grimes afterwards.

>>
>>73634951
I was trying to make he point that the grimes video lacks passion. It comes off as bland and repetitive because symphonia is grimes singing poorly over a beat. She should have added a few chord changes and layered her voice through some effects, I can see the song working well if she did that
>>
>>73634963
>She can't sing well, can't write a song, and REALLY can't play keyboard.
Really? Why she has a fanbase and critical acclaim if you pretend she's totally bad? Her look alone wouldn't be enough to sustain all that.

Technically she's not perfect. But guess what? Art is not about perfection, is about feelings. Her music is super melodic, relatable and emotional.

fine, for the record. it's not entertaining at all even compared to sitting at home and listening to music at my computer desk. If you're asking for a comparison to a live show, I recommend checking out some of Dinosaur Jr.'s recent live shows, they go hard.
>>
>>73635001
That dude is ridiculous. He's complaining that a quirky alien synthpop artist doesn't sound like the good ol' Stevie Wonder. Ridiculous. It's like expecting Slayer to sound like Nick Drake.
>>
>>73635001
Maybe a better comparison is Bizarre Love Triangle by new order. I don't like new order, but this song is a better comparison to symphonia than superstition. Imagine if BLT was just the first four bars of the song vamped with some effects and singing. It would suck because is too repetitive and samey and isn't ambient enough to really draw you in. Another decent comparison would be the always on my mind cover by the pet shop boys. This song is also kinda similar to symphonia except it's not just a beat and some effects and singing, it's a cohesive song. If grimes wanted symphonia to be ambient af and really capture you, she needed to turn the effects up to 11 and maybe get some good samples. Listen to changeling by dj shadow, the song is insanely repetitive but the ambiance makes it interesting, and it's varied enough to work.
>>
>>73635007
Did you actually watch that video? There are lots of changes during that song, including an insane breakdown. You're not going to fool anyone that she lacks passion. Admit it you're trolling and leave.

Dude, I know and like all those songs. You claim that Symphonia IX is just a beat, some effects and some singing over it. Open your deaf ears and hear all those meticulous layers, including those backing vocals who you didn't even notice despite being almost in foreground. I guess her music is too subtle for you. You're not going to convince anyone that Symphonia IX is a bad song.
>>
>>73635132
I sure as hell watched it, maybe she's just not getting through to me because she can't sing. I suspect a major part of the grimes appeal is because she's a "quirky alien" like the anon said above. Her image matters more than her music. For the record, from what I've listened to grimes' studio stuff is far superior to the symphonia video, but it's still not that great. She needs to gitgud at songwriting, she has some production chops already

Again, I am not much of a fan of that particular video (because I don't think it is all that great a perofrmance of that song.) However, to say that that is because it lacks passion is patently ridiculous. Imo the problem with that performance is that she had way TOO MUCH PASSION (see all that breathless jumping about? Not even remotely condusive to the emotional experience that song is trying to convey) for that partcular song. Again, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGSwtEHE1dE for imo an excellent performance of that song: everything starts out calm and steady, the song slowly builds, and then everything collapses into harmonic chaos with the enharmonically modulating upward bass note that suddenly pops out near the end.

Her image doesn't matter at all when listening to her music. You're listening to sound waves, not her image. Stop impling such sexist ideas just because you know she's a pretty woman.

>she can't sing
She's primarily a producer and a songwriter and then a singer. Her singing is an acquired taste: you get it or you don't (you didn't). It's like Bob Dylan, Billy Corgan or Kurt Cobain's voices: you get them or you don't. She doesn't sing perfectly but her range (over 4 octaves), her rich timbre and the way she uses her voice makes her special. She puts a lot of passion in her singing as you can see in this live Ave Maria cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGLvUejoRb4

Tom Waits has an incredible voice, roughness in timbre =/= bad. Beefheart doesn't even try to sing in his most famous album, he more shouts out wacky poetry, so that's a poor point to make. Byrne has a goofy voice that fits the music perfectly, Lou Reed is mostly talking through some of his best songs, and Dylan is at least emotive.

Don't even get me started, desu.

Getting back on topic... I was just re-reading through this interview with Grimes on her Art Angels studio setup http://imgur.com/gallery/S9esf/ and it seems to me that there are probably more hints in it as to what sort of sounds to expect from her for her NEXT album rather than Art Angels itself. E.g. there's a lot of interesting gear - like this guy https://3diosound.com/products/free-space-binaural-microphone - she mentions having gotten only at the tail end of the production process, and wanting to implement more fully in whatever she does next.

Couple that with her (relatively) recent pickup of Roli gear, and I'm VERY curious as to what her next album is gonna be like sound design-wise.
>>
>>73638364
Yeah, I'm interested too. From everything I've heard, she's making a radical departure from Art Angels, and as a huge fan of Halfaxa and GP I think I'll love it if that's true, given that I hated AA.
>>
>>73638383
By all rights, I should've absolutely hated Art Angels from a musical standpoint (because of my own professional musical background - VERY classical, VERY contemporary alternative.) What is not to like about AA? It's still synthpop but more upbeat and diverse.
>>
>>73643562
Too poppy without being interesting. The album was a chore to listen to.
>>
>>73643562
Because it's predictable shit, it's just devoid of any kind of authenticity.
>>
>>73643596
>predictable shit
Did you hear those songs before?
>devoid of any kind of authenticity.
You're silly. You basically question the authenticity of an album made by one person (+ 2 collaborators on 2 songs each). A person who happens to like pop too.
>>
>>73643725
>predictable means a straight copy
Sub 70 IQ, fuck off
>>
>>73643594
>The album was a chore to listen to.
Really? IMO this album is a joy to listen to it. I dare to say it's the catchiest album ever.
>>
>>73643736
Did I say a straight copy, you triggered autist? I said if you heard (similar) songs like them, not identical songs. You're a dumbass who takes things literally. Fuck off too.
>>
>>73640307
Yes. She already announced early this year that there will not be a new album in 2017. Just to not make people wait unpatiently for something will come later.
>>
>>73643738
>Really?
Yes.
>>73643751
>I said if you heard similar songs
You asked "did you hear those songs before"

>Kill V. Maim is predictable
>>
>>73641008
>Too much waiting. Why does she hate us so much?

>it's annoying i know haha, but my albums take a long time to create because i don't buy songs/ hire producers/ writers or engineers. the majority of artists do, so they are able to release music faster. unfortunately it takes me longer because if there's a style i need to learn i just have to figure it out by trial and error, or if im stuck on a lyric or beat sometimes i have to start again. i think it leads to more original product though, and hopefully the fans are happier in the long run. that said, i am making a lot of music right now, but i also want to have more of a sonic theme to this album so i'm using less of the stuff i'm recording. in any case, ill try to be as swift as possible!"
>>
>>73643906
>You asked "did you hear those songs before"
And you took that literally, like a giant idiot. I meant if you heard songs LIKE them.
>>
>>73643944
>I should somehow know what you meant anonymously where its not obvious like in a 1-to-1 conversation
>>

>Grimes, a singer, songwriter, artist, sound engineer, and possibly a different species than human, is a person and a genre of her own. Listen to any of her songs, and you’ll soon understand what I’m talking about. Her music style can be described as electro-pop, with her vocals ethereally shining through. Even Grimes’ style, a combination of streetwear and modern goth, is uniquely and boldly her own, and it’s highly doubtful that you’ll find another person remotely like her on Earth.
Any other artist like Grimes?
>>
>>73644064
Fortunately, no

>Claire recently attended WWDC, which she enjoyed and looks forward to getting a computer that can one day handle the stress she puts on them, “I spend so much time editing videos and music, so I’m always crashing and destroying computers”. Which is easily understandable, as she produces, engineers, and records most of her earlier tracks herself, and directs a large portion of her own videos, which even go up for awards against veteran professionals. Her dedication to her work is something anyone can see, and it shines through within each record, each with a different variation on her synth “electro-pop” sound.
>>
>Underneath her cool exterior is something more surprising, though. She is so easily relatable, and far away from the sort of barrier that many artists create between them and their fans. If you saw her at WWDC, you would see the flaming dog tag around her neck, which was given to her by a fan. She also runs an art page in which she features fan art and occasionally peeks of her own sketches. Instead of posting photos posed and edited, she prefers candid shots and freeze-frame moments in her life — as well as photos of her dog. Even as an accomplished musician, she still finds time to voice her thoughts on her platform, often sharing websites or pieces of information relevant the current political climate on Instagram and Twitter. She is a strong advocate for the environment, as well as a supporter for those affected by the refugee crisis in Syria and surrounding countries.

>Even more so, she is blunt and tells you what she wants you to know, not what she thinks will impress you. When asked about what she looks forward to in life, she simply replied, “Spaghetti”. She is a self-professed canned food lover, and is in love with Singapore due to their environmental regulations. Looking to the future, she’s finally getting to a place where she’s able to do what she wants to do with her music and style, “I have a budget for the first time ever, so I’m buying a sh*t ton of hardware and building a studio, and just getting to go where I want to”.
>>
>>73644136
No wonder you autists are in love with her. She has that "approachable" persona going on, plus she's cute yet not crazy gorgeous, so you delude yourselves into thinking you could actually have a shot with her.
>>
>>73644164
That's just your silly theory. Nobody in their right mind would believe they could have a shot with her. People like her mainly because of her music; anything else is just the cherry on top. Fact,

Tough luck to you: Claire is doing whatever she feels like she doing. On AA she wanted to make a pop album and she did it. Better focus on other artists; she's not going to repeat her older music.

This is about the same thing as when Radiohead did Kid A after OK Computer: a change of style.
