As far as I know, buttrock is a term people throw around to describe pretty much almost all post grunge bands, notably Creed and Nickelback who are the common targets of the term. A lot of people describe it as rock music that tries to be "heavy" but overly tries too hard and looks silly, with vocalists that sound either like Eddie Vedder or Kurt Cobain
Of course, that definition has been twisted in various ways, but that's mostly the gist of it
