So I just finished listening to this. What am I missing? Is it one of those albums that just needs several listens to appreciate? Was I just meme'd?
you must not have any feelings OP.
its a little bit of a grower, i think s/t is almost as good as it. try hatful of hollow next
It took a few listens and time for me
pop rock is all down hill from here so I hope you've had your fill

Don't worry. I still don't understand how of all their albums, their worst is hailed as their best. Listen to Meat Is Murder and the compilation, Hatful of Hollow, which is God-tier.
listen to this instead
How are you not an emotional wreck right now after having heard "I Know It's Over," "Never Had No One Ever" and "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" in such a short time span?

THE QUEEN IS DEAD BOIS
I've only heard s/t and it clicked the first listen. What's next?

IT'S SO LONELY ON A LIMB
If you like catchy indie pop then maybe give it another shot. If you don't, then just pick something less poppy in the post-punk umbrella, such as This Heat or Killing Joke. Or if you want more mature (still poppy) versions of The Smiths look into sophistipop or other jangle pop bands like Prefab Sprout or the Lotus Eaters

Lyrics don't affect me, no matter how emotional they are. I just listen for music that's pleasant-sounding to my ears. I love all those songs you mentioned, but for a different reason.

try Meat is Murder, catchier tunes

I'm not OP. I already love The Smiths and Meat Is Murder is my favorite Smiths album. I just wanted to weigh in to say that the emotional aspect isn't something that everyone factors in to their enjoyment of the music.

Didn't care much for The Smiths first time I listened to them, 3 years later their self titled is one of my favorite albums.
