What do you mean grow out of hip-hop? There are hip-hop artists who produce songs with more depth than your favorite artists are capable of producing. TPAB is one album that comes to mind.

I never got into hip-hop. I was in middle school in the 80s when Beastie Boys and black rap artists started getting air play. Then I found alt rock on a local college station WOXY 97-X. So yea, fuck hip-hop

It doesn't matter what it was produced for, the theme stays the same.

whats the message for TPAB? the depth it has only goes to 3 levels, racial, socioeconomical, and personal. I like that he tied all these issues together but there's no message within the album besides us needing a person like pac' now. The instrumentals are watered down funk and jazz and kendrick admitted to have never heard a jazz album in his life.

Sour soul is the better jazz rap album that came out the same year.

Hilarious how you consider yourself someone who has matured.
>>
>>73578964
I support that

Music only exists for intangible person reasons, the minute you make it deliberate you've basically nullified the point. Studying "music academia" as if there's one clearcut way that it can be interpreted kind of only serves the purpose of jerking yourself off and feeling smarter than other people

There are intelligent ways to evaluate and justify music but it's mostly what you arrive at on a persona level after years of considering things and what they mean

It might not need to be inherently bad but even within the very small sample size of "music academics" I can see from a mile away that these people are musty old fedora-clad children that don't seem to understand the finer points of why things are interesting

Except music theory and a good musical education are descriptive, not prescriptive. If your musical education consists of teachers prescribing what is/isn't good chances are you are in a really lousy music school. Most good music schools try to cultivate music as a personal experience, in both the consumption and creation aspects.
Also making deliberate decisions in music does not nullify the point really. Most good writers in any genre rely on cultivated compositional skills over purely accidental song-writing. It's not even about knowing theory really. Most writers rely on having a well-developed relative pitch. Just because they play a certain chord progression without knowing exactly what it is doesn't mean they can't deliberately write it through their own understanding of it.

The notion that hip hop is shit is never supported by the best non hip-hop albums that are supposed to be this gold standard. Not to mention that the musicality of hip hop heavily centralizes lyrics. Now I know what many of you are thinking, "but hip hop lyrics are shit lol" and if that is what you're thinking you are looking at the genre in a narrow scope.

In all honesty, many of the patrician core records have lyrics that are overly pretentious and vague with meanings that have been extracted like a "What was the author thinking?" question on a 10th grade lit test.

Now if we're arguing instrumentation....yeah hip hop probably isn't winning any bets there.

IMO, good albums belonging to one genre don't make albums of other genres shit, that's pretty faulty logic.
