The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Going to be taking a 5 hour plane ride both ways, and I've been thinking of what to listen to, something which won't be ruined by the background noise and ear pressure... any ideas? I'd really like to listen to https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/the_california_ear_unit/for_philip_guston/, but I don't know if the sparseness of it would be the kind of thing that I should listen to in complete silence. Anyone whose heard it have any thoughts on if I should or not? What about other classical music? (I have a shit ton of really long classical backlogged)

Here are some other things, not sure which would be the least ruined by background plane noises..

>Kevin Abstract - American Boyfriend

Fuck guys I really liked it. Which was kinda out of left field cause I didn't go in
with any expectations, I kinda just expected dollar store Frank Ocean, which
isn't untrue but I enjoyed it anyway. Didn't speak to me too much the first time
around but my second time thought a lot of the tracks really stood out to me.
The interludes could definitely be cut down and take away from the cohesion of
the album, which is it's glaring flaw. They're all have baked ideas that had potential
in some cases but were interrupting the flow of the longer tracks. Despite all
that, I like that he's toying with the structure of the album and at least trying
some ideas, even if they don't always land. I'm a fan of the versatile song
writing between the admittedly basic guitar work and the alternative hip hop,
as well as everything in between. I don't know guys, I think I just have a
soft spot for alternative R&B recently. I doubt many of you would find the same appeal.

Good morning /daily/!

Gotta fly today for a team-building event. Will download a couple of albums.
>>
16 Horsepower - Sackcloth n Ashes
>Redneck Radiohead
3.5

Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone…
Pretty nice string driven post-rock. Similar to Godspeed obviously, but diverges with contributions of the singer and more explicit themes of religion. And also less suite focused songwriting. And even more strings.
3.5

The Beach Boys - Today!
>Avant-Doowop, Progressive Surfwave
Eh
2.5

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
>Wankcore, Tekdef
Impenetrably technical, or at least it is until the tracks diverge into a digestible riff based section like many prog metal bands are prone to. The bassist often does his own thing opposed to the lead and rhythm guitarists which can be good or bad. Wouldn’t be prog metal without an acoustic interlude (“An Incarnation’s Dream”).
3.5

Acid Bath - When The Kite String Pops
>Proto Nu-Metal, Shitcore
The first time I listened to this I thought it was shit. The second time it was alright. Like The Melvins if they had less self awareness and more deep south. Unlike the Melvins they don’t know when to quit and write songs (and albums) that are simply too long. A necessary step in the history of Sludge, but listening front to back is a chore unless you really want to hear over an hour of shouting, feedback, and riffs. Why are there acoustic interludes on this album.
3

Black Flag - My War
>Melodic Shitwank
Interesting album, one side hardcore punk and the other Proto-Sludge Metal. Does both serviceably.

Hilary Hahn - Hilary Hahn Plays Bach

Clouds. There's something about the pieces on this that make me feel like I'm up in the clouds. Maybe not even the clouds, maybe I'm just floating around the Earth like a balloon let go from the hand of a child. Maybe I'd actually just be a cloud myself resting calmly above the world.

I've heard some of the music here before so of course I was expecting well written and composed stuff. I mean, it's Bach we're talking about here and he's considered the greatest composer of all time by almost everybody. Hearing Bach play a piece from this release would probably turn me into an actual cloud. However the question was:

Could Hilary Hahn?

The answer:

Hell yeah

Hilary Hahn plays with some elegant fingers. Every note hits great and brings out the spirit of Bach in the air. Bach had times in the past when he would complain about his musicians, thinking them to be incompetent and unable to perform his grand music. Maybe Hilary Hahn was born in the wrong time and should've lived in Germany. Beautiful pieces, passionate playing and of course a fine working instrument: the ingredients for a recipe of great performance. 4/5 (don't really give 4s on first rating but did relisten and am relistening so yay).

Before I actually edit the pic so I can put my rating and all, thoughts on the chart? Anything questionable here? Btw, zane I decided to put that BLA album instead of what you recced because I already have it in my laptop but I hope yer okay with that.

Robert Rental & The Normal - Live at West Runton Pavilion, 6-3-79 (1980)
[1980]

Awesome synth/noise/punk show. 25 minutes of switching from delicious synth beats accompanied by catchy vocals to noisier, but never too harsh breakouts. So so good, I recommend this even if the genres aren't your thing because it's very atypical and not what you'd expect.

===unnamed trip vs Novelty===

>So - So
>Glitch

Oval and a japanese singer? Doing nameless glitch tracks, and deconstructing recordings into drifting fragments? alrite

Right away, this album is about feeling close and personal, with tones that softly warble from all directions, and more layers of Eriko Toyoda's gentle voice, singing lullabies for broken automatons. This image breaks apart as the album progresses, disfiguring Toyoda's voice and strums into purely electric scratches.

The white and scratchy coos from voice and synth alike are nice, but it doesn't shift much from them. Track 6 is the first to sound like the stirrings of an industrial graveyard, and 8 follows with scrambled steamworks and gentle pipe hums.

One problem with this album is its tendency to quickly fade to silence to repeat a passage, or move to a new melody. It works in some tracks, like 9, but 5 is where it sounds lazy.

Otherwise, I fairly enjoyed this.

===EthyBoy vs Comet===

>Harmonia - Musik Von Harmonia
>Ambient, Prog Electronic

Much more ambient than I was expecting, but very full sounding for its release date. Not at all minimal, if you listen to how individual parts play out. I'm picking up a lot of sounds that Cluster would have been known for, but they seem to fit better within a less acoustic, space ambient atmosphere here in this album.

As I mentioned before, I feel like there's still a stiffness in the production that's present while listening to this. I'm not sure if it's simply becuase of some fucked personal connotation I associate with Krautrock, or if it's simply because of the album's age.

Favorite tracks: Veterano, Sonnenschein, Dino

7

>Stringtronics - Mind Bender
>Jazz Fusion, Library Music, Spy Movie-core

Arranger and composer Barry Forgie, Anthony Mawer, Nino Nardini, and Roger Roger (his actual name) all contribute to this time capsule. There's bongos, a string section, and the unforgettable thrums of electric guitar, grooving and flowing-- all for a movie that doesn't exist.

The first few songs are strong and vivid, but the latter ones not by Barry Forgie rely on different, weaker sounding instruments, or they feel like a rehash of earlier tracks.

What kind of genres/albums do you like? I'm not very good at giving recs and this year feels a tad weak overall so far, but I've been making sure to keep up on as many new and underrecognized releases this year as I can, and it's been pretty great! So I can at least give it a try lol.
I only just listened to pic related for the first time like three/four days ago and it's probably my favorite of the year now. Really fucking great, maybe my first 9 of the year, or at the VERY least my first 8.5 or so.
You can sample it on the bandcamp to see if it's your kind of thing. Favorite tracks you should listen to for a sample are "The Worst in Me" and "Dream About a Miracle"

Phew, it took a while since it was hard to read the titles sometimes, but I finally made a second listening chart, with two picks from the top /daily/core list as well as one album from each person's 3 picks in the /daily/ albums chart. Except for "FlyingIceWizard," who I took two from since I've been meaning specifically to hear Spiderland and Ascension for ages.

Nick Cave might've been the best concert I've ever attended. The only issue was that the venue kinda sucked, and since tickets were more expensive this round I had to save up and the seats I got kinda sucked. But with that said his performance was incredble and his setlist was insane. As soon as I get the chance to see him again (preferably in a smaller venue, or just a closer spot) I'm going too.

In The Attic is so great, really underrated imo

Just a thought: I've noticed I seem to mostly like atmosphere in first hand and story in second hand, and then everything else (production quality, musical talent or whatever) comes afterwards, cause looking at my top 10 all of it is story rich or very atmospheric

I listened to Mikko, it was very good!! I really like it, definitely my favorite this year so far.
I'm gonna make my way through your recs too B-)

Oh and if you're gonna listen to the SFFS album, there are lots of parts in spoken Swedish (like seriously, half the album or something) so it might be a bit hard to get into. But here are the translated lyrics: https://www.flashlyrics.com/lyrics/suffocate-for-fuck-sake

Toro y Moi - Causers Of This (2010)
>chillwave
There's gotta be more to chillwave than this, right? Fax Shadow sounded kind of like proto-vaporwave which was cool, and the title track is a funky French house? microhouse? song, but too much of it felt like your standard summery feel-good indie pop, just with electronic instrumentation. It's very pleasant, and definitely serviceable for the mood its trying to convey, but it's just not that interesting.

This is awesome. I'm a real sucker for the whole soft-loud dynamic, and songs like Angry Son, I Think Your Train Is Leaving, and Refelctions On Milkweed are just pure catharsis. Even the faster songs have this hypnotic rhythm to them that really hooks me in. It definitely makes me want to look into more from this genre.

Oh and if you like atmosphere a lot, American Hero, New Age Sewage, KWIATY, and Cruel optimism are probably the best when it came to that, out of what I recommended. Got nothing with an overarching story though. Although Amen 3 is part of a trilogy of albums about the guy getting disillusioned with his overbearing parents and their hyper-religiousness (or something; haven't heard the other two).

Another two albums I really like this year and are very atmostpheric are Loss and Sferic Ghost Transmits (I like loss more, but Sferic is also very solid).

Andrew Jackson Jihad - Knife Man
>Nü-Wave, Hipstercore
MIxture of comedy rock, emo, punk, and folk rock. It’s okay, instrumentally it’s fairly neutral. Songwriting is good at times and at times some of the worst things ever put to music. The last two tracks, one a bit more acoustic and abstract, the other featuring emo tinged, confessional lyrics and a powerful sound supported by strings, are the best ones on the record.

N.W.A - Straight Outta Compton (1988)
>gangsta rap, west coast hip hop

There are four incredible tracks on here: the title track, "Fuck tha Police", "Gangsta Gangsta", and "Express Yourself". These are the four tracks everybody talks about when this album comes out, and it's for good reason. "Straight Outta Compton" and "Fuck tha Police" are two of the angriest, most passionate hip hop songs out there, and "Gangsta Gangsta" and "Express Yourself" are just damn fun. Dre and Yella's production is on point, and Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Eazy-E all turn in great performances, Ice Cube especially. Every track beyond these four is pretty lousy, ranging from boring, offensive for the sake of being offensive tracks to weirdly silly, upbeat party tracks. It's strangely not very dated given it's time period, but it's not terribly great.

2.5-

Grateful Dead - American Beauty (1970)
>folk rock, country rock

This is a pleasant album, and there's not much more I can say about it. It seems like the band's talent came through more on live recordings, because this is a bit of a drag. It's Neil Young without the grit and the guitar heroics; The Byrds without the jangle; Dylan without the lyricism and wit; it's like an album of every '60s and '70s trope and genre that never really develops it's own unique voice. "Friend of the Devil" is a great track, and it's overall a nice, easy listen, but it's absolutely nothing more than that.

Iron and Wine - Woman King (2005)
>singer/songwriter, indie folk, folk rock, contemporary folk

Beam's foray into more full-bodied, orchestrated folk doesn't work nearly as well as his gorgeous lo-fi style. His angelic voice just does not fit these jauntier instrumentals, and pretty much every song beyond "Jezebel" just misses its mark completely. It's still a decent little EP, but it doesn't hold a single candle to The Creek Drank the Cradle.

Husker Du - Zen Arcade
>Post-Shitcore
Incredible amount of variety and ideas in the punk canon used in this album. That last song is an interesting experiment to say the least.
3.5+

Iggy Pop - The Idiot
>Ian Curtis’ favorite album
“Sister Midnight,” would later become “Red Money” on David Bowie’s Lodger and “China Girl” would reappear (for the worse, in my opinion) on Let’s Dance. Pop and Bowie explore a cold, drab post punk sound on The Idiot before most notable bands of the style had made a debut. Admittedly, they do retain some of their hard rock sensibilities, especially on “Dum Dum Boys.” The album serves as a great solo debut for Pop, and a mix of the experimental styles in Bowie’s albums, Low, Heroes, and Lodger as well as Pop’s punk stylings.
3.5+

Iggy Pop - Lust for Life
>album cover as reaction image-core
More Pop and less Bowie than his debut, still consistently good.
3.5

David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
>musical abortion
Making the best of a bad situation, having to cut up his planned 1984 Rock Opera and only leave half of it intact, Bowie manages a good hard rock effort on this album. Contains some pretty repetitive tracks, but the Halloween Jack character and dystopian themes pull the album up.

ah fugg i'll do more listenalongs

Iggy Pop - Lust for Life (1977)
>rock, art rock

The two obvious tracks are absolutely wonderful, no-frills rock and roll with a light artsy edge and some absolutely phenomenal, gritty vocals from Pop. Pop does adopt a much slower sound here, no doubt influenced by Bowie, and in doing so his sound loses a lot of the blood and sinew he had with the Stooges. It's done well, but the sound here is often way too basic and uninspired, especially considering the talent on board here. There are some absolutely wonderful tracks on here, but it's too light and typical to stand tall with Pop's best work.

2.5+

The Beach Boys - Surf's Up (1971)
>psychedelic pop, pop rock

The title track, the best track here, is done one better on The Smile Sessions, so pop this album up with Brian Wilson's 2004 Smile as another album that becomes obsolete with the release of that album. The absolutely wonderful cover art is shockingly indicative of what the album sounds like, it's downtrodden and melancholy, but in a different way than Pet Sounds, much more melancholy regarding the state of the world more than anything else. A theme of consciousness permeates the whole album, coming to a head on the terrible "Student Demonstration Time", but it's done to greater effect on tracks "Don't Go Near the Water" and "A Day in the Life of a Tree". The lyrics stand out in the Beach Boys' discography, but the music does anything but. This is probably one of the band's least inventive releases, too mellow and unobtrusive to really stand out, the only real stand out track being the already used title track. Still, it's solid Beach Boys, and I can't complain about that too much.

Mastodon - Leviathan (2004)
>sludge metal, progressive metal

A scorching, driving opener in the form of "Blood and Thunder" makes way for an entire album full of forgettable, one-note prog metal. Mastodon really do crunchy, heavy sludge well, but their prog is so tedious and basic, especially when it gets to the acoustic sections. I don't hate this as much as I thought i would, but I certainly don't like it.

2.0+

Napalm Death - Scum (1987)
>grindcore

Thirty minutes of a gray mass of semi-grindcore. This is shockingly unheavy and pretty unmetallic, especially with Justin Broadrick's more noisy, structureless a-side, and this approach really doesn't work. It tries for both noise and metal and it doesn't achieve either. The b-side is a bit better, with some thrashier, punkier tunes, but it's still such an ugly, unappealing sound, and not in a good way like some other grind albums.

That Brad Mehldau album is awesome

My week has been okay, i fear my taste is getting less interesting though, which seems like a silly thing to think but i haven't really been stepping out of my comfort zone very much and its leading my listening habits to just looking like mu-core
But yeah, I've been listening to a ton of Radiohead lately since the OK Computer reissue got me in that mood.

wew I am easily getting distracted, less than the half to go however

>Holy Wave - Relax
>Psychedelic rock
2.5-
I have a problem with contemporary psych rock, it has to do with that most of the time it's just forgettable, the same sounds over and over, few bands actually making the cut. That makes me approach these albums not expecting much.
This Holy Wave album is actually different sometimes, and that's because it doesn't seem like they take themselves too seriously.
The longer tracks are the interesting part of this album while the short ones are examples of the "forgettable" stuff I said previously.
Favorite tracks: Night Tripper, Change Your Head / Ecstatic Moment.

>Ruth - Polaroïd/Roman/Photo
>Coldwave
3.0-
Nice coldwave album, the mostly instrumental opener showcases a lot of influence from the big acts of the post-punk era giving an idea of what to expect.
Title track, actually more synthpop stands out from the rest, we also have stuff like "She Brings the Rain" that feels longer than needed and "Mots" which does the complete opposite, feeling short in a way.
In the end it fails to deliver the promises given at the opening.
Favorite tracks: Polaroid/Roman/Photo, Mabelle, Mots

Making some decent progress. I changed the rating on Abysmal Thoughts from a 3+ to a 2.5 because it really felt pretty plain and I felt like I was being too nice. Still pretty impressed and happy with American Hero though.

Magic of Horses was very generic indie rock but had some undeniably fun tunes on it, and it kept it short which is good for their kind of music, it was just nothing inventive or unique.

Antiseptic was very solid and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's very John Cale, in style only slightly, but also in the singer's voice which is verrry similar to Cale's. I'm really bad at saying what genre something is, but I guess I'd call it art-alternative-rock?

Appropriation Loops was just kind of bad, mostly rhythmic, electronic with only one track out of six that I enjoyed ("Walled Garden"), which was coincidentally the one that was stylistically different from the rest of the album by being much more ambient. This album made me angry as well, because after that ambient track, without any build up, it segues into the loudest track which just starts out which is basically incredibly loud and fast drumming. If I'd been wearing headphones I'd have had a heart attack. This album isn't really in my kind of genre so that might have something to do with my rating, so don't necessarily pass on it if you like that kind of stuff, but compared to what I do know of the genre, I still just really didn't like it.

Automaton had some good tracks and I appreciated the fun and carefree atmosphere of it since there hasn't been much music like that this year that I've heard. But after the first two or three tracks it slips down in quality and stays at that level for the rest of the album. But it's still fairly funky so that's something I suppose.

I really like the new MAC DEMARCO, especially how the last 3 tracks are the best. usually the first 3 are the best on a record and that's so tiring.
I take back what I said about MOMUS having good songs but no good records- Little Red Songbook is incredible. the latter half is weaker, which is why I didn't score it higher. so amazing.
new FLEET FOXES is great. I think this one is gonna be a slow burner.
CAPTAIN CLEANOFF I saw live supporting INSECT WARFARE. structurally, their songs aren't the most compelling grind, but their vocalist is world class grind material.
at that same show, INSECT WARFARE covered "you were supposed to rot" by ENTOMBED. Their record Left Hand Path is just good metal. no aspects detracted from the record, but it isn't my favorite style altogether.
COSMO PYKE is a new UK based artist who plays in the style of KING KRULE. usually style clones are annoying, but cosmo writes good songs so I can't fault him. great summer jams, especially "chronic sunshine".
CHEVAL RETRECI is a phenomenal piece of wankery featuring WILL GUTHRIE and JUNKO HIROSHIGE of HIJOKAIDAN. I really loved it, and I don't have the same appreciation for this sort of thing as dogwander.
speaking of, this HAINO/O'ROURKE/AMBARCHI effort is interesting, but not as compelling to me as cheval retreci.
Finally, VINCE STAPLES new record, and my intro to vince, is short, potent, and freaky. Yeah Right has a great feature from KENDRICK LAMAR and a totally bizarre beat. recommended for those hard summer parties.

グッドラックヘイワ (Good Luck Heiwa)
>jazz
It ends up that these guys are pretty obscure; nobody has even mentioned them on /mu/ in almost 4 years, and I couldn't find a link to one of the albums I was going to listen to.
Their self-titled debut album sounds kind of like the original Animal Crossing game in jazz form: simple, with a focus on feel-good melodies that sound a bit quirky and somewhat nostalgic. While Good Luck Heiwa is a drum-keyboard duo, their sound is punctuated by more "silly" instruments like whistling, Jew's harp, and all kinds of atypical percussion. It gives the otherwise simple arrangements a lot of personality and charm. Their sophomore album Patchwork, on the other hand, sounds a little more serious, and I think the quality suffers slightly as a result.

Good Luck Heiwa (2006): 3
Patchwork (2008): 3-

Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma (2010)
>"IDM"
I'm definitely going to have to give this one a few more listens. My only experience with anything remotely similar is Teebs, so this was really interesting. I tended to prefer the slower, softer songs; there's a lot going on here, and on some tracks it started to sound a little busy for me. The fact that there are a lot of shorter trackss is a double-edged sword; the sheer diversity made listening to it feel like an adventure, but there were times where it felt like a song was about to really pick up, but would instead just end abruptly. I enjoyed it though, thanks stick 4 the rec.

Aphex Twin - London 03.06.17 [2017]
>”IDM”, acid techno

in the first few moments of this new aphex “album” i had the immediate impression that it would maintain the highly analogue-synth-filled sound of Syro & Cheetah, which i’ll admit doesn’t excite me on paper as much as a return to a fully ambient or drill-influenced sound, but nevertheless, new music from mr. james is always a nice surprise, especially one like this that I hadn’t even heard anything about until i saw it on rym.

generally this record functions a lot like a less polished and track-oriented Syro. as mentioned earlier, much of the same classic analogue synth sounds are still there, but rhythmically it’s a fair amount more complex and raw. after a pretty run-of-the-mill first handful of tracks, the shuffle step beat of “untitled 4” is an interesting change of pace, but with very little in terms of progression from the start to the end of the track it falls a bit flat in the long run.

the second half of the album is where it starts to interest me a bit. the simple bleeps and bloops and smooth synths are replaced by autechre-like jaggedness and obscure glitchy effects, but structurally the tracks are a lot more upbeat, dynamic and filled with “life” than what autechre usually puts out. unfortunately, compared to Syro, the tracks never seem to really GO anywhere, and have such short runtimes that they basically just seem to be a small musical idea as opposed to the full-fledged compositions that we all know Aphex Twin is capable of making.

overall: has its moments, misses the mark on making them last

Madness - One Step Beyond... (1979)
>2 tone, ska

It's a pretty fun album, but really one note and way too stupidly goofy. The band's obviously having a lot of fun here, but the horns are grating as hell and it's very obviously a precursor to the watered-down sounds of ska and ska punk to be come, which gives the coolest jamaican ska a bad name. The titel track is an effortlessly fun little romp, as is the rendition of "Swan Lake", but besides that I'm not a fan.

2.0+

MC5 - Kick Out the Jams (1969)
>proto-punk, garage rock, hard rock

A damn riot of a good time. MC5's studio records all sound incredibly thin, so the thick, noisy production here really gives the performances a big boost. All the songs sound pretty much the same, sure, and Tyner's a lousy vocalist, but the screaming guitars and the driving production make for a super fun, raucous garage album that stands tall with the best releases in the genre.

3.0

Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane (1995)
>melodic black metal

Melodic black metal really isn't my thing, the raw, dissonant sound of black metal is what draws me to the genre, and that's lost on albums like this. This record has the atmosphere down pat, it sounds just like the cold, surreal scene the cover portrays, but the melodies and the riffs are so damn repetitive. Similar chord progressions and rhythms are re-used again and again, and while it's a damn cool sound and the guitar work is really impressive, it gets old and stale. Impressively dark and sinister, and a good listen because of that, but not my favorite black metal album.

Jefferson Airplane - Volunteers (1969)
>psychedelic rock, folk rock

Jefferson Airplane's most outwardly political album, both in lyrical and musical content. Lyrically, it's obviously a massive critique of the Vietnam War, as was popular in psych rock at the time. The lyrics and themes are poignant, insightful, and often shockingly relevant to the climate of today. Musically, it takes on a very folky, Neil Young/CSN sound, structuring their songs in a much more protesting manner while still embracing the much more lethargic sides of folk and country rock, which is where the album hits its lowest point. It's a very average album at it's core, eschewing surreal psychedelia in favor of some often limp country. It still rips in its more psychedelic moments, but they're too few and far between.

2.5

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP (2000)
>hardcore hip hop

I almost gave this a 2.0, but Eminem is just such an irritating, despicable presence here. It's obvious that he's a good rapper, and he's even a good lyricist at times (do I need to say more about "Stan", or even "Kim"?), but he relies so much on stupid joke voices, unfunny skits, now ultra-dated pop culture references, and edgy as sin homophobia that anything good he does here is completely negated. The beats are also less-than-stellar, the one's that attempt humor are blatantly unfunny and the rest of them are just a bit flat, even though other, more serious rappers flow on them perfectly. Eminem obviously has an obscene amount of talent, but he's using it here in such a piss-poor manner.

Jesus Lizard - Goat
>shitcore
One of Steve Albini’s pet bands so to speak, standard Touch and Go staple noise rock. More surfy/garagey/bluesy than most noise rock, and not even very noisy. I don’t know how the guy who wrote “Kerosene” thought these guys were all that.
3-

Jesus Lizard - Liar
Like Goat but better, faster, and noisier. Still maintains some acidic, southern themes on “Zachariah” among others.
3.5

Tyler, The Creator - Cherry Bomb
Actually pretty good not cringe at all.
3+

Emerson, Lake, And Palmer - Tarkus
ELP's second album boasts a symphonic, overbearing first side so full of progressive rock cliché packed into a 20 minute track I can’t help but love it on the first half. Tarkus’ second half is a poorly thought out mish mash of ballads, rock and roll, and a 2 part suite detailing the reasons you should be an atheist that would fall flat even to a “The God Delusion” thumping infidel.
