What's /mu/'s opinion on the best Grips album?
>>
>>73542107
yeah The Money Store is one of my favorites too
>>
death grips is fucking trash
>>
>>73542107
Exmilitary is a near-perfect album. I dislike Spread Eagle Cross The Block a little bit but the rest of it more than makes up for the experience. All in all one of those rare gems that appears out of nowhere.
>>
>>73542107
It's alright. I don't like a few songs. Spikes has my favorite hook though. Money Store is still my favorite.
>>
>>73542107

Yeah the money store is sick

Jenny Death is the only Death Grips album that has more than a song or two I like on it.
>>
Government Plates though!
>>
>>73542107
utterly god tier, like everything else they've done
>>
>>73542333
>more than a song or two

Um...
>>
They don't have a best. They just have moods and creative sessions in which they consistently adjust, improve and evolve in some tangible way.

Up My Sleeves is their best song. I would say Government Plates is their cleanest project.
>>
Objectively The Powers That B
>>
>>73542396
Up my sleeves is a great opener but imo not their best song
>>
>>73542221
Exmilitary isn't what I would consider their best, but it's probably what I've listened to most from them. It's just 50 mins of hype.
>>
>>73542356
>ebin. simply ebin.
>>
>>73542424
What would you call their best song
>>
>>73542504
Hacker or Beware imo
>>
>>73542424
>>73542396
My favorite part of death grips fans is no one agrees what is best. Testament to their quality.
>>
>>73542559
I cant agree more with this
>>
>>73542557
Guillotine, Klink, SECTB, and Culture Shock are better than Beware
>>
>>73542577
Those are all great songs but beware for me is more iconic and epic
>>
>>73542619
Beware does kind of inform every Death Grips song after it, doesn't it? Maybe it has a bit to do with opening the band's entire discography with a Charles Manson sample.
>>
>>73542221

Shit is mine! It's all mine!
>>
Niggas on the Moon? It's great!
>>
>>73542559
same with kanye except kanye isn't for pretentious tumblr hipsters
>>
>>73542986
The Death Grips fans that are pretentious are the kids that read way too far into the lyrics and think reading them on genius.com is part of the experience

A good Death Grips listener knows that it's V E R Y SHALLOW LISTENING and loves it anyways
>>
>>73542333
then your opinion is irrelevant sadly
>>
>>73542107
pic related followed closely by exmil
>>
>>73543031
reading comments on dg lyrics nearly turned me off of the band because of the stupid shit i saw
>>
>>73543431
It's genuinely upsetting
>>
TMS' best songs are better than BP's best songs but BP is better overall.
>>
does no one like bottomless pit? Why? The mix/mastering is not an excuse every song is how it should sound and is excellent.
>>
>>73543447
i feel like at this point theyre writing lyrics just to see what autistic theories 11th grade english class rejects come up with
>>
>>73543031
except reading them on third worlds IS part of the experience.

The fact that you think it's shallow listening just shows you dont know how to appreciate anything that isn't trout mask replica or some shitty bowie album
No Love their best song
Both Whammy and World of Dogs are better and that's only out of songs on NLDW
>>

>>
>>73544745
There's absolutely nothing interesting about the instrumental on that song

I separate them into 3 eras. I think the first was the best.

1st era

2nd era
>Government Plates
>The Powers That B

3rd era
>Bottomless Pit
>Steroids and new shit

Jenny Death deserves an 8 desu but spot on otherwise.
>>
Why does no one talk about the last track on Steroids? Easily one of their best tracks of all time.
>>
>>73551415
Completely disagree. The only thing that was surprising about it was the fact that it dropped out of nowhere. Sure, it felt layered and complex the first time I sat through those 22 minutes, but already with the 3rd listen I felt like I had gotten everything out of that album that there is to get.

I've revisited it many, many more times past that and nothing has changed. It's the same thing as Bottomless Pit and Jenny Death, there's no meat to any of this shit. Overcompensating with fast beats, because there just isn't anything interesting going on in terms of song writing. There is such a world of difference to a release like Steroids and No Love Deep Web or niggas on the moon.

It feels a little bit like they took the speed of Hot Head and applied the straight forwardness of the other songs on Bottomless Pit, there's no bite, the sporadic and challenging beat of Hot Head is nowhere to be found here, those live drums that at first sounded completely unorganized and messy, but then you start picking up on patterns, none of that is here. It's just fast and loud, shows no restraint and since there's none it's very hard to find moments that stand out or leave any kind of impact.

Boring as hell. I hope the next album is something completely different.
>>
>>73552716
I liked it a LOT at first but it began to wear on me.
The hook on it is fucking killer. That train sample makes me cringe every time though.
Bald Head Girl is my shit now and the highlight of Steroids for me.
>>
>>73545666
By that logic NLDW is era 2 and TPTB would be era 3 and Bottomless Pit is era 4. And I even think Steroids is more closely o their older stuff due the production being not that clean
>>
>>73552901
it'd be better if it was split up into tracks

Vocals are just another sonic layer. When they're understandable, really good lyrics can add to the song but really bad ones can detract from them. Everything inbetween doesn't really matter. I've never understood why some people are so interested in understanding the exact words in a song.
>>
>>73552901
I feel like Steroids is a sort of preemptive B-Sides.

Songs that they weren't 100% happy with, so they release them while they tweak the better songs that will end up on the new album.

I disagree, they're different styles but consistency wise they're both quality. I think exmilitary is their most influential album and thus best album. Although every DG album has had an impact on various genres, it would be hard to argue exmilitary didn't have the most people going 'oh shit' back in 11'. It has had the most visible impact on music today.

also: Known for It, Guillotine, Takyon, it goes on...

Popular Opinion: The Money Store
Pleb Opinion: Ex-Military
Patrician Opinion: No Love Deep Web (but Money Store is also pretty patrician)
Worst Album: Bottomless Pit or Jenny Death
>>
Jenny Death has the best lyrics, Money Store has the best hooks, Bottomless Pit has the best production quality, NLDW has the best vocals, NOTM has the best instrumentals, Government Plates has the best atmosphere, Exmilitary has the best tone.
>>
>>73566615
outside of On GP and some other song I can't even remember Jenny Death has quite cringeworthy lyrics
Bottomless Pit has the worst production quality among all the Death Grips albums, it's also their worst album
idk what's so special about his vocals on NLDW, he's just rapping and sometimes yelling like he usually does
>>
>>73566615
I'd say NLDW has the best production/atmosphere and Exmilitary has the best lyrics
>>
>>73566816

Exmilitaty's lyrics are kind of boring and tame compared to the weird abstraction and improved rhyming techniques of later DG stuff

A lot of it is just really loud and extreme versions of common rap tropes, with ride not yet able to flow well or really drop multidsyllabic rhymes regularly.

His lyrics are probably best from NLDW onward, they suddenly stopped being blocked by their edginess and started having really sincere and funny self-degradation like on Eh
>>
>>73566880
I completely understand, and from that perspective I agree with you.
I just like it when he shouts "bitch" a lot
