I'll let you in on a little secret. All chords have multiple names depending on context. F#min7 and A/F# have the exact same notes in them. Just because it has the open A shape in it doesn't mean it's A/F#. Take any major chord and move the root down three semitones and you'll have a minor 7.

Thanks for the link. However, my question is how to incorporate said knowledge to the guitar. I have an okay understanding on music theory. Thing is, when I grab my guitar, I don't know what to do. I just start randomly noodling, hoping it sounds good.

Think about about tension and resolution. Certain notes in a key will create tension that has other notes it wants to resolve to. This is basically what I'm being taught in school right now, this is more classical counterpoint stuff.

To be honest, I'm having some trouble applying what I learn in the theory classes to what I'm playing in the guitar classes so it's not really sticking.

How can I work on improving my singing voice?

I've just been trying to sing along to stuff in my car lately and I feel like it's helped me with actually hitting the notes and the like but I still don't really like how my voice sounds in general. It's like dollar-store Morrissey. I wish I could try and either get lower or get louder/angrier but then I either sound like dollar-store Ian Curtis or just painfully bad

Is there any way I can actually change my range/how my voice sounds with enough practice? And if not, how can I try and find my optimal range so I at least know whereabouts I should be singing to sound best?

thnk
>>
>>73540631
The guitarist from Iceage isn't dumbing anything down, he can barely play. You're actually listening to him learning to play and progressing on every Iceage record.
>>
>>73543891
Nah that part was separate. I didn't mean him.
But I disagree anyway, he is a decent player. He has a great style man, some off chords thrown in at times and its perfectly suited for certain songs, etc.

But yeah, I wasn't referring to him with the bit before that.
>>
>>73543910
*odd chords
>>
>>73543910
The reason Iceage's first record sounded the way it did is because he couldn't play at all. Their last record was just what he learned since then. He's not a good player at all, he's just committed to playing in a band and trying to keep up.

Iceage is derivative at best, they're just pale shadows of better/more talented artists that have done it better.
>>
>>73543070
You should take Captain Badass and run with it. That's what I did with Roman and I've loved every minute of it.

Anyone have any experience with the Hartke KB12?
Looking for a low-mid tier gigging amp for my bass and this was what they had in the store when I went. 500 Watts, which is nice, but the 12-inch speaker is putting me off. It also sounded a little muddy when I tried it but I'm sure I can fuck with the mixing and make it sound better
>>
>>73544030
I disagree, lad. I couldn't give a fuck for the lead vocalist. He ruins the songs, in all honesty, whether that's the style or not, he's garbage. He's just there to look good. The guitarist is great though, fuck what your saying.

The first album was punk shit, whaddya expect? The later albums have been decent. On Iceage and Marching Church records, his playing is good. I'm not saying he's amazing or whatever, but he has great style with where he takes it. Listen to them perform "Untitled" at Pitchfork. You can be technically gifted and great at playing guitar but not know how to write a good song, or where to go with it.

I don't know how good he is, and neither do you really (unless you know him personally), but his style is good enough for me to stop and listen.

And yeah, they probably are, but I'd rather have them who are at least somewhat genuine, than other trust fund pop shit you see at festivals now. They're alright in my book.

>The first album was punk shit
Yeah, because he couldn't play and he defaulted to shitty punk because that's what he could pull off at the time.

The fact that you're attracted to halfassed playing and clichéd songs doesn't change the fact that he's a halfassed player. He isn't a great player at all, you just don't have a shit filter.

The fact that you felt the need to immediately jump to babbling about "style" indicates you're a vapid dilettante though. In other words you fit in perfectly with the demographic Iceage has targeted, so I'm not really surprised you responded like you did.

I'm still not 100% sure what amp i should go for.

I've been thinking about a Roland JC40 to get a really pretty clean sound, because i mostly play clean.

But after playing on Hot Rod Deluxe i realized i actually like that amp too, and it's within my price range.

I'm also kind of tempted going for an amp that is on more on the "dirty" side of the spectrum, and then using it for playing cleans.

Just recommend me any cheap amps that are also good

2. Boosting treble and mids is not the same as turning up the tone knob, so it creates a different sound

That's a pretty good question. I usually just use the regular spring. My guess from reading some things is it adjusts the frequencies outside of your regular preamp eq by adding slightly more or taking away frequency depending how you turn the knob. Just a shitty guess though really.

The hot rod series gets a lot of shit for sound and reliability. But if your ears say it's good that's all that matters. I'd be looking at some older model fenders for the cleanz. JCs are nice too. I actually recently got turned on by the orange th30 as well, I don't use high gain much any more but the clean channel is superb in all the videos I've seen. You can get very close to froosh territory with it. Have yet to find one locally to try out. Generally with toob amps if you want clean you want more watts, more watts mean more clean headroom in most cases. I gigged with a 15 watt head and a 4x12 with my soul band and even though i was cutting through it wasn't clean at all with the amp dimed.

From the producer's site it says

So, it's not solid spruce top.
It's laminated mahogany.

At that price I would go on the Ibanez Pc12mh, which is a beginner instrument, but it sounds good and it's pretty comfortable to play.

I've gotten my hands on an old Aria Pro II and I've got some intonation issues. Am new to guitars, so not sure how to troubleshoot this.

The problem is that the 12th fret is more or less 1/4 note sharper across all 6 strings.
I've messed with the bridge intonation tuner things and it looks like it had no effect at all.

What else can I try? I was thinking maybe messing with the truss rod would do something?

Also, I slapped .12 to .56 strings on it, though I have no idea if the guitar was out of tune with the strings it had before.

do you notice any difference in buzzing on the sharp sounding frets?
>>
>>73550556
Didn't hear any buzz on the 12th fret. I suspect the nut isn't working very well these days, looks like it's creating some buzzing here and there.

Seems like the problem is with open strings. If I tap the frets it's a lot more consistent going up the fretboard, though not perfect.

Meaning, if I tune holding a fret it'll be more consistent along the fretboard, and it'll be a bit out of tune with open notes. Does that make sense?

Because I don't know how long I can keep noodling the same horrible random uninspired pentatonic shit.
>>
>>73552834
>>73553593
supposedly you need to drink alkaline solutions to fix this. Don't do that though
>>
>>73553730
I think pentatonic is great for improvising because its based on 5 notes. but it doesn't have half steps which limits what you get out of it.
i can't really think of a good way to think of an idea for music, sometimes i just half asleep and something comes to my head and i forget it 5 seconds later.
all you need to do is look at simple songs like bob marley "no woman no cry". its a simple melody of C G A F chord progression. the resolution is very simple (A-F) and the entire melody is just based around 4 chords.
so even if you thinking about a melody. its best you go up to your guitar and try to play 4-5 notes that sound good to you, maybe it will help experimenting

The more you learn by ear, the better your ear gets, the more able you are to play what is in your mind.

Not the same guy... it's not necessarily about the brand. It's about things like the thickness and wideness of the neck, the fretboard radius and if you like the feel of it. The wood that it's made from. Whether it was made in Korea, Japan, USA, England, Germany... or some shithole in India, China, etc.

What kind of bridge do you want, trem etc. Some people specifically do not like floating trems. I personally hate fixed bridges. etc.

There's plenty of choice with a €400 price budget. Fenders are not really too cool now.

Try before you buy, and if you like the way one guitar feels over another, and it's easier to play, then perhaps that's the better option.

Is there such a thing as a compression pedal? I've recently heard Ty Segall's album "Emotional Mugger" and it's like overloaded with fucking fuzz, but the guitars also sound so compressed (not the bad kind of compression though) that it sounds like they're going to fucking burst any moment. At some points they almost sound like saxophones.
>>
>>73549514
i don't care.

guitars are the most versatile instruments. and the fact that youngsters resort to cheaply made electronic music just shows how much people want to cut corners and stay away from a real instrument much as possible.

i don't understand how electronic music is so successful. every 12 year old can produce electronic music in his basement. and to make things worse it will probably sound like shit because no one actually gives a fuck about music theory anymore.
the only instrument that is present in electronic music is keyboard. and even that is automated now. you can simply tell the computer to shit out a tune

Its a lot harder to buy a bad guitar today than it ever used to be to be honest.
In the 60s/70s it used to be hard to buy a good one, there is a reason LP owners were obsessed with a single model year, Jimi threw them away and Eric Clapton frankensteined Blackie into existence. Remember you only see the instruments that were worth keeping.
80s saw the appearance of cheap crap that was crap, but was at least cheap so you got a fair deal.
Since the manufacturing processes improved, certainly this century, its been amazing. If you think of something like a Japanese PRS, hardly anyone had anything that good back in the day whatever the brand name.

Guitars can be just as versatile as a bowed string instrument. Where guitar fails is the fact they we can't hold out notes as long as bowed instruments, and like you said, we can't change things like texture or timbre while playing a note. But guitar is still plenty versatile

You can infinitely sustain using an E-bow

>we can't change things like texture or timbre while playing a note
Absolutely wrong. you can create alot of varying textures with a variety of different guitar techinques

I'd say beginners should learn a few songs that they know and can sing or hum the tune of.
>>
>>73557096
Also the main reason guitars are more versatile than violins: polyphony.

>i don't know what versatility means

Besides, there's a ton of classical pieces that have bowed instruments play on more than 1 string at the same time
>>
>>73557376
I know what versatility is and polyphony is one of the most important things that an instrument needs to be versatile
>>
>>73557371
