Probably, but he musically expresses himself a lot differently from hendrix even if he plays guitar similar to him.

No he isn't. His technique is ultra sloppy and his phrasing is very, very poorly articulated.

It's actually this. Jimi is the GOAT so I assume OP means who is the GOAT of our generation/lifetime. It's unquestionably Frusciante. I don't care what you guys think about the Pepper's catalog, Frusciante is 'The Guy.' If I ever have kids and they want to know who was the best guitarist, who was most creative, who could write songs for days, it's him.

John Mayer is one of the better players posted in this thread so far.
>>
>>73523359
Mayer is an excellent guitarist, but I don't think anyone would put him forth as this generation's Hendrix, even though he's influential due to the celebrities he fucked, inspiring a generation of (literal) wankers.

>>73523412
Fair. I was actually going to include the incomparable to Hendrix part but said fuck it instead and posted half a thought.
>>
>>73523412
You can't deny Mayer's greatness and the fact he was massively popular in the mainstream keeping rock and roll alive on the charts. That's why people rate Mayer and Frusciante, because that's literally the last time rock music was box office. They were true rock stars and had hits for days.

Continuum is a great album by the way I'd give it a listen-through.
>>
>>73523514
I'm not denying it, I'm saying it isn't on par with Hendrix's. Technically, he's much better.

I prefer Try! with the Trio, though.
>>
>>73523514
>>73523549
He did nothing for Rock'n'Roll, though. Blues, yeah.
>>
>>73523514
Yeah but Hendrix was a revolutionary. That's the main staple behind him. Van Halen arguably changed the game the most after him as far as rock guitar went. Other than that you have people utilizing neat things that distinguish them amongst the hoard of mediocrity we have in music today, but nobody changed the rock guitar game as much as Hendrix.

>>
>>73523549
Oh don't get me wrong, I don't rate him near Hendrix. The thing about OP's premise though is that rock music isn't nearly as culturally important in our lifetimes as it was during Jimi's, so no one would be nearly as popular, great, or creative. Jimi did it first and he did it 50 years ago. No one is our generation's Jimi Hendrix. Instead we have Mayer and Frusciante.
>I prefer Try! with the Trio, though.
That's respectable.

>>73523514

>>73523570
Mayer is a Berklee faggot though
Also, his music is all uninspired shit and his personality is that of a spoilt trust fund spastic.

John Frusciante comes closest, in my opinion.
RHCP are garbage but he's a great guitarist with his own recognisable style.
>>
>>73523672
Mayer has very inspired playing, Frusciante does not.

You've got that backwards m80
>>
>>73523672
rhcp's bass and drums are very good, anon, even though the songs are prostitutes
>>
Anyone else astounded that Frusciante survived the 90s? I thought at least 1 Pepper would die
>>
>>73523707
Not at all.
Mayer is probably the better musician in terms of technical ability, but Frusciante's style and output is better, in my opinion. I mean, John Mayer's creative output is garbage in comparison. No one listens to that shit except teenage girls who want to fuck him.

>>73523723
Flea is a decent bassist.

>>73523741
They already did before John joined, you pleb.
Also, in 95 he was close to death.
>>
>>73523854
Mayer's actual commercial output is indeed garbage, but his potential is much greater than Fruaciante's. Mayer actually understands music whereas Frusciante just kind of guesses.

I know this... did you read my post? I said the 90s. I'm referring to the classic RHCP line-up from Mother's Milk and Onward. The famous one. I'm surprised one of them didn't die then.
>>
>>73523893
Nah, Frusciante knows theory and shit, you're just ignorant.

Mayer's window has closed. He's not in his peak anymore. He collects watches and does other pleb shit now.

He never had the passion to be a great musician that put out great music anyway, more a career move for him.

>>

It's true.

Rock is a massive genre, and whether you like it or not, was the reason half the newer genre's exist. Just because you are too young and missed it, doesn't mean anyone cares.

Their stuff before the 2000's is hall of fame level. People saying which and what, the only real hole in the band was Keidis, but even he seemed to fit into the sound well. The downfall was pumping out pay check albums after they ran outta ideas.

If they stopped after Californication, they would have gone down as legends, but they've overstayed their welcome.

Everytime i see some pleb joke about how all their songs are about california, I cringe at the ignorance of what they used to be.

I don't understand that sentiment. I love their post-millennium albums as much as their pre-. I grew up with that stuff, they were with me when I was 8 all the way till now at 24. Their last 2 albums are legitimately some of my favorites of theirs. And Stadium Arcadium, man that thing had so many great songs that just became life soundtracks. Everyone loved the Peppers. From hot stacys to computer nerds, they were just universally great pop-rock. Almost everyone I've ever met is a fan, only on /mu/ so people revile them for some reason.

As for not prefering their newer stuff. I have much heavier funk and blues roots, so I very much prefer their older heavier stuff. Freakey Styley would probably be my favourite album, or possibly One Hot Minute with Dave Nevarro. Obviously my actual favourite is BSSM, but I rate that in my top 5.

>its a facebook thing these days. The joke is they're shit songwriters, which rumbles my jimmys to dangerous levels.
That's a shame. I think a lot of underage fuckers here dismiss bands like U2 and the Peppers simply because they're so popular. They're seriously inhibiting their ability to enjoy certain acts for reasons that are rarely even musical. I just listen to music, and if I like it I like it. Don't care about fanbase, popularity, or the personality of the band members. I think when some of these dudes get older they'll become more open-minded and just listen to music for what it is. There's whole genres I thought I would always hate at 14-16 that now I love.
>As for not prefering their newer stuff. I have much heavier funk and blues roots
I appreciate that, they did that style very well. I've always tended more towards tight pop songwriting so their album from last year was a real treat for me.

Continuum, then Heavier Things are a good start, then go to maybe his first record. They're all really good. Its funny they all live in a vibe so you'll notice the aroma quickly. Obviously John Frusciante, John Mayer is more like this Generations Stevie Ray Vaughn, if he did alot of pop and had a high ego.

Best part about Frusciante is that yes he was inspired by Hendrix but Frusciante is Frusciante, like his sound is instantly recognizable. Hes not just Hendrix wannabe and I really find that grand.

I dont think it is arguable. EVH has had THE most influence of any rock guitarist since Jimi.

Watch Mayer jam, you moron. I know he's got that pop career, but he's a fucking good player who just chooses to make pop shit for whatever reason.

Furthermore, it's still Fruisciante. The guy you posted has nowhere near enough infamy to be close to Hendrix, and that is important whether you like it or not in this particular discussion.

The answer is Frusciante. He has his own instantly recognizable style, he's huge in terms of popularity still, and his playing cut through the bullshit of plank wankery. He's still put out records that sold with fantastic playing on them. No one knows who the fuck Derek is, so he can't be like Hendrix.

It's not a quesiton of 'technically the best guitar player', but of style, of impact, etc.

>>
>>73533518
Not only are you a moron, you're also a pleb.

Mayer is technically great. He is a great player, probably one of the best alive right now in terms of technical ability and knowledge of music.

>>
>>73533569

So...when your argument fails simply resort to name calling. So very predictable.

Derek Trucks is sooo far ahead of Mayer in terms of technical ability and knowledge of music that its not even funny.

You know this too...but somehow you feel the need to shill for Mayer based on nothing more than your physical attraction to him.

Derek Trucks may as well not exist in terms of influence.

I'm not shilling for Mayer either, I can't stand the guys personality or his music, but I know that he is a great player regardless. You're just some stupid fuck who thinks because he makes pop records that he can't play.

Frusciante is as close to Hendrix as you can get. End of discussion.

>>73533698
But to make your point you posted a song that sounds similar to their later output, which most would agree is shit anyway.

So many people jump to criticise Mayer, classing his ability as inferior to that of other famous guitarists, before taking a moment to analyse what actually makes a great guitar player. For me, there are two components that are integral, and cannot be taught. You either have them, or you don't. Touch and feel. Touch is something that - in my mind at least - you can decipher from a guitarist playing just two or three notes. It's as given and determined as the shape of their little finger. Some people just have that natural ability to make any guitar note sound beautiful - on its own, unaided. John has that - in spades. Feel, in my mind, is working on the instrument to the point where the player has gotten its elasticity as natural as the voice of a great singer. There's no feeling stunted - the player understands rhythm and dynamics (the latter is so criminally overlooked) to the point that they can build and unbuild a phrase in a way that is effortlessly musical. I've always thought these two things are ingrained, and not taught or learned. Someone like John could think out that same guitar solo - probably even think it better than he can play it. When you analyse an experience in life where another human being communicated something to you that triggered a strong emotion, there was probably more to it than just the words he/she used. Pauses, delivery, dynamics, flow - coupled with the meaning of the words; the same is true of music.
>>
>>73537751
All these things are what the best musicians spend their time trying to emulate. Then you have technique - that's just the mechanical ability to know your instrument well enough to communicate the ideas in your head cleanly, without necessarily being overly sloppy etc. Technique comes with practice. Touch and feel are innate. Comparing John Mayer to certain other successful (unnamed) blues guitarists out there is to be impressed by technique and show, more than to be impressed by how elegantly an emotion is delivered to from heart to heart. John can do this without thinking. That's why it only took him an hour to cut those tracks, and that's why Eric has praised him so highly. It's an innate communication of notes through his guitar, into your ears and hearts - there is so little thought involved at this point, it becomes effortless. I don't even know where I'm going with this any more! Moral of the story - thank you, Eric. You hit the nail on the head in your appraisal of Mayer, and I know that anyone who's hearing and feeling the same thing listening to his music, can vouch for that, too.
>>
>>73537492

>been supporting live music acts for about 3 years now

While your take on guitar playing is interesting and you might not even be wrong, it surprises me none that Clapton, one of the most overrated players in history, praises Mayer so highly

They are much the same as players. They play the blues but don't "get" the blues. Mayer may have feel, he might have touch, and he has the technique, but he's doesn't have understanding.

Listening to him play blues is incredibly boring. He can play all the right notes, he can be all flashy, he can do the bends, but he has no sense of what makes blues work, because I suspect he doesn't have the life experience to express the blues properly. A good looking talented white singer and guitar player? He already had the odds stacked against him.

When you watch Mayer play, he always plays directly on the beat. He hits notes where you expect him too. Blues players, as I've noticed, play behind the beat, or nearly free from it besides the 1. Mayer's playing, while appearing smooth and flowing, is rigidly in the rhythm, and effortlessly played in a flashy way. Blues can be effortless, like Jimi Hendrix, but even Jimi got sloppy, he let it all hang out, and even though it was effortless, there was a contradictory struggle in the playing.

Jimmy Page once described a player, I forget who, he was actually white I believe, but he said he was just mesmerized because while his playing wasn't astoundingly technical (still quite technical), there was a drama in the sense of the struggle of this man vs his guitar. Would the guitar be able to express what he's feeling? If that makes sense. I get that from blues players, even ones who keep it simple. They have a struggle, a certain jena se qua, that is hard to replicate, and players like John Mayer and Clapton completely miss. It's why they're so boring.
>>

Good choice
>>
>>73538759
The same goes for singers. Frank Sinatra had this incredible gift for vocal expression that most of his contemporaries like Perry Como and Ella Fitzgerald lacked.

If you want to use examples from more recent history, think all those operatic 90s pop singers like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. They had tremendous range, but their vocals felt robotic, more like singing for the sake of it with no feeling.

As MOR singles go, "Lay Down Sally" is a relief--at least it has some soul. But the album leaves the juiciest solos to George Terry, and where four years ago Eric was turning into a singer--in the manner of Pete Townshend--now he sounds like he's blown his voice. Doing what, I wonder. C+

Backless [RSO, 1979]

Whatever Clapton isn't anymore--guitar genius, secret humanitarian, God--he remains king of the Tulsa sound and here he contributes three new sleepytime classics. All are listed on the front sticker and none were written by Bob Dylan. One more and this would be creditable. B-

Just One Night [RSO, 1980]

Who needs another live double? A master guitarist whose studio albums have been cited by Sominex for unfair trade practices, that's who. All your AM and FM faves served up hot, cold, or both. A-

Behind The Sun [Duck, 1985]

Eric Clapton and Phil Collins are two individuals who can count themselves as survivors (Collins and how). Clapton was never the mediocre vocalist he's wont to declare himself in retiring moments, but his gift only made sense when laid-back was commercial, and here he's not retiring, he's looking for work. For a variety of reasons, including current fashion, Phil Collins mixes the drums very high and then induces Clapton to, um, project. Painful. And bad. C-

my friend what you are saying is mightly stupid. John Mayer invested himself in blues music and blues artists the same way your lungs invest in oxygen. The dude basically worships and studies music of all blues legends and plays with all of them numerous times and they all praise him highly. you literraly just took that comment and wrote the exact opposite. His record and reference cred completely refute the dribble you just spew for no reason but to slander him. John Mayer is modern day blues. A student who became the master.

Throw in Stevie Ray Vaughn as another white boy bluesman who never quite "got" it until just before his death (drug rehab apparently lit a fire under him).

Hahahah please. I don't care who he worships, who he studies, and who he gets cosigns from. There's this cool thing that is called money that will get people to say good things about you, and play music with you as well.

Basically,

John Mayer = Like a Chinese robot kid on YouTube but better. He can play perfectly, is a great player technically, but he's missing something. He's essentially like a robot. All of his music is uninspired shite, only teenage girls listen to it.

Frusciante = Maybe not the best technically, but has his own instantly recognisable style. Huge impact on people. Huge following, probably bigger than Hendrix and everyone else ITT if you consider population growth, etc.

Derek Trucks = He could be the best player in the fucking world, but he's only known in blues circles, and even then... not by that many people, to be honest. What good is making great music if no one ever hears it, really?

Frusciante has the most accessible sound, the most energetic sound all of mentioned ITT. He doesn't go overboard with plank wankery like some, he keeps it interesting for non-musicians who just want to hear a good fucking song.

Frusciante is closest to Hendrix, really.
Look at Steve Vai as an example of what I mean, he's great technically, isn't he? But his music is garbage, man. In my opinion it's just shit. I can't listen to that for long periods, it's just him masturbating through his guitar. Ridiculous.
Same with Eric Johnson, etc. And the people saying Jack White are just smoking hard drugs or something, because he's fucking garbage.

So yeah, Frusciante is as close to Hendrix

Buckethead is garbage.

Anyone who releases hundreds of albums in a short space of time is garbage to me. Fuck that. Work on creating a few solid albums, not just throwing a bunch of shit and hoping something sticks.

Just a gimmicky wanker in a hat and retard "wow le shredding dude" faggots eat it up because they don't understand music

Yeah, it's garbage mate. He plays music like some Chinese cover band. They can hit every note, but it's just garbage.

Fuck off Mayer shill. He's a great player, but his music is worthless shit.

This dude has some serious talent man

kek ur loss bud, guys like him dont come often sweetheart
>>
>>73541110
No loss at all.
His music is terrible as I said. His talent isn't songwriting.
If it wasn't for his decent looks, he wouldn't have the same act. He'd be playing in someone else's band... which isn't necessarily bad.

Great guitarist but makes mediocre music that only women and teenage girls listen to. I'm serious, look at his audience whenever he plays.

Wow this is an unbelievably ignorant comment. Different anon here. John Mayer is one of the best pop songwriting minds of my generation. He writes and plays his own stuff. He's an icon and you're really showing your age by not respecting him.
