Kill V. Maim is a 2010 dance-pop song ala Katy Perry, REALiTi sounds like a quiet Lady Gaga ballad, Flesh Without Blood is basically pop-punk with more studio work. The album is a regurgitation of modern pop clichés that, to me, feels like it's praised because it's credited to Grimes, an artist who has made great music prior to Art Angels.
What made her earlier albums great is that they balanced bedroom synthpop with a minimal gothic atmosphere, but Art Angels is just Grimes going full-on pop.

WTF are you talking about? Melodrama by Lorde - which was released recently - sounds very retro compared to Art Angels. AA can't sound dated for the simple reason it was a unique album of 2015 - nothing else before and after sounds like it. In fact every pop album since then (even CRJ's B-sides) sound painfully '80s retro compared to the sci fi Art Angels.
