What does the indie rock scene look like in Africa?
Not much indie going on there until recently.
I lived in West Africa for 3 years. In Mali, there's a blues scene that combines American blues with local folk and Arabic vocal music. Rock was a big influence on jazz in Ethiopia and Nigeria. There's an extreme metal scene in southern Africa (Botswana, Angola, etc.) South Africa has a long lived punk scene, and a little bit of a Ska one. Some folk groups are very influenced by rock in West Africa, notably Baaba Maal in Senegal and Amadou & Mariam in Mali.

Again, Amadou & Mariam is good. For Malian blues, I really like Vieux Farka Toure and his father, Ali Farka Toure.
For African Jazz, something worth checking out is the collaborations the Dutch anarcho-punk band The Ex did with Ethiopian jazz musicians. When I was there, I really liked Mandinka folk music. There's a good compilation of Senegalese folk and dance music from the 70s called Senegal 70. You can find a lot online about South African punk and Botswana death metal, but I don't know too much, though I strongly recommend the documentary Death Metal Angola, a fascinating doc about how impoverished Angolans got really into death metal because it helped them deal with trauma from the civil war.
