Beats aside, Dear Mama and So Many Tears are strong contenders for top 10 hip hop songs of all time.

it'd be awesome if some of you guys could outline why you think this stuff is good or bad

like, everytime i listen to it i 'like' it quite a lot - but it does sort of seem kind of weaksauce, or at least fairly lazy in execution, compared to other rap. the only way i can rationalize my continuing respect for tupac is because of his media character. knowing his life, 'image' etc etc, seems to put a different kind of spin on this album -- though i'm not sure if this is the appropriate way to approach music at all.

I'm probably the only person that thinks Strictly 4 My Niggaz is his best album.

Yeah, pretty much every rapper you enjoy will hold Tupac above themselves. It's not a question of the most technical, fast spitting and so on, he had the most impact and connected with the most people, he was a super star even for people who had no idea about hiphop. No one holds Tupac on a holy grail where they say he'd go toe to toe with someone like Inspecta Deck or Rakim on a verse, he wouldn't freestyle like someone such as Eyedea or KRS, everyone knows that, it's not why he holds GOAT status, which a lot of people here seem to miss. He was a titan in hiphop the same way Metallica was even though you can find countless metalheads (especially on /mu/) who shit on metallica all day for being mediocre.
