Portishead is Evanescence but with good instrumentals. I just listened to their discography for the first time and the vocals come off embarrassing and doesn't fit with the instrumentals, except for a few. Wandering Stars is probably their worst song.

What's the appeal? Am I looking at it wrong?

well evanescence certainly wouldn't have happened without portishead. but the vocals aren't embarrassing at all. some of the lyrics aren't nearly as good as they could have been and drag the songs down. all that said, 3rd is pretty much a perfect record
